"Hand me that torch, will you?" said Pego, who had by that time gotten inside the maintenance rooms. The hallway ahead was pitch black, but there were some torches in the room. Direnu gave her companion a torch and locked the door behind her. Cautiously they headed into the tunnels. It was quiet. Direnu would have expected some noise from machinery, but there was nothing. It almost felt like they were going into a catacomb, until Pego broke the silence like a sledgehammer would an egg.
"So," she inquired with a cheeky smile, her words echoing down the hallway. "I noticed you've been gettin' rather friendly with Vare..."
"Keep it down!" Direnu replied. "And what makes you even say that?"
Pego raised a shoulder. "I'unno. 'S just that I noticed you two talking earlier. Alone." Direnu looked away, her face unable to hide a trace of embarrassment. Pego continued. "And it's not the first time either, I've seen you two together quite a few times. What's up with that, huh?"
