Captain Thunder

John Bunyan is primarily known for "Pilgrim's Progress," But few know he did another allegorical book,"The Holy War."
Like "Pilgrim's Progress," It is a spiritual allegory. But whereas the former is an allegory of the Christian Journey, "The Holy War" is an allegory about the battle for man's soul. As the forces of the Prince battle against Diabolous who has taken over the city of Mansoul (who willingly accepted him in).

A publisher known as Whittaker House had done a language update to the original tome, We came across it and I pursued the idea of doing an illustrated version of the book. I ended up doing four poster illustrations and some concept sketches to submit with the proposal. They didn't bite....or rather, the owner didn't bite. The staff really wanted to work with us.
In any case, here's the first of the posters (sorry for the quality, I'm trying to find better scans). The character is Captain Thunder and he leads the Prince's forces against Mansoul. His emblem was three burning thunderbolts, and so I used it all over his armor.
