Still life Drawing III by arminmersmann Still life Drawing III by arminmersmann
Sticks and Stones

30 x 19 pencil on hot press water color paper.

A simple concept; instead of the usual flowers with their sensual soft shapes, what we undeniably think of as beautiful, I placed some sticks and stones scraped from underneath my deck and filled a beer glass (I drank the beer first). In front I placed two more beer glasses, half filled with water and stuck in just a couple of sticks. The beauty is in the distortions, refractions, and transparencies. With each new layer of glass the sticks changes in detail, sharpness and direction. What first intrigued me was that the refraction of the second largest glass where the water completely hides the sticks and stones in the back glass. Sometimes I draw for just the love of it; this was one of those times.

I don't care what you say. I don't care if you fly over here and draw it right infront of my eyes. It will still be a picture!

You're incredible. :D

Amazing. I'm leaving noseprints on the screen but it partially still looks like photography. Hope to be that skillful one day.

This has to be the most realistic object study i have ever seen! Even by professional standards your work is exceptional, the amount of detail, the textures, the reflections and the distortion are incredible.

I find myself constantly coming back to your work for inspiration or for tips and I've got to fav this.

Do you have a book out? if not why not :D

:O_o: just mindblowing, great vision for the details, the distortions, texture, blurs ...everything. It is a feast for the eyes.

Can you give some tips about how you did it.

Although I won't be as good I am SO going to try and do better! ^_^

I love this by the way. Reminded me of grandmom and her enormous strength within her frail body whenever she wanted to go hiking.

Another reason why it reminded me of her was because she used to ALWAYS made me clean her muddy, twigs attacked boots. =D

nice stuff, i know you might be too busy to reply, but, did you use an eraser for the highlights on the glasses?
arminmersmann Featured By Owner Sep 20, 2005  Professional Traditional Artist
I didn’t not the I wouldn’t it just doesn’t work for me to erase it damages the paper and gives a different texture to it. I just draw around the white areas. Thank you.

echan Featured By Owner Aug 7, 2005
I absolutely love your artistic skills and I must say that this has to be my favourite piece of yours. Not only is the realism amazing but the concept behind it is wonderful also. I'm a big fan of clichd things being turned upside-down or conveyed through different means... if you get my gist (for I'm pretty bad at writing down what I mean as of late.)
Once again it's another amazing piece produced by you and I look forward to seeing more.
Breeder Featured By Owner Jul 30, 2005
Brilliant, as allways. :)
PossessedSquirrel Featured By Owner Jul 29, 2005
Anyone who says still life is dead, could look at this and be proven completly wrong. You've put together all the elements of a complex, compelling, still life. You've set up your own composition and have drawn it with such vision and clarity (not to mention detail). The faint horizon line in the back is perfect too (you also get to see how its distorted amongst the different glasses, very interesting!). This drawing definetly let's me sit here and explore that composition better than any photo could (and I'm a digital art/photo person too). Just the perfection of the lighting and shading really blows my mind. The lighting on the surface of the water, the difference in the diffused sticks from the front and back, behind glass, under water, exposed up in the air... it all just makes me take a closer look and really realize what effects different elements have on just these sticks and woodchips, whether its lighting, water, or glass. God, it must take years to develop an eye like yours. I could just stare at the rims of each glass, or where the handle meets the beer glass, and just marvel at the work involved in just SEEING that in your original composition and then taking what you see and then transferring it to paper. And I love the setup as well. You chose really interesting nature textures (the sticks, and woodchips) that really intrigue though they may be very much, everyday objects we always see. You have this ability to take these somewhat everyday objects and create something very new and fresh.

I can't say enough good things about this, but I shall stop before I do.
