Drawing of Larry Butcher by arminmersmann Drawing of Larry Butcher by arminmersmann
Sorry if you seen this before I showed this here a while ago, I got it back from a year of shows and took new scans of it. I think itís somewhat sharper and clearer than the other one I downloaded.

Pencil on mat board 15Ē x 24Ē

I drew this portrait as homage to a great artist, and great teacher. Larry was a catalyst in my career as an artist, this is the second one in the sires of five that I have completed

Thanks for stopping by

Nimra

Browsing through you gallery, this was one of many I stopped to view this intense portrait. Funny thing, what caught my eye was the resemblance, (without the beard and long hair), to a professor I had in Junior College who, coincidentally, taught landscape painting. And much like your homage to a great artist and teacher, my thoughts turned to my own mentor who was also a great artist and man.
His name: Ray Strong and his best work was done plein air. Last time I checked, he was living in Santa Barbara but I fear, by now he may no longer with us.

Ah, a fellow Delta student/alumni?

Been trying to get Larry's painting class for years, but he hasn't taught it in a while... Had to settle for Gina.

Great piece, I love how you captured the frizziness of his hair and the intensity of his eyes.

Larry made a difference in my life, he showed me that art came from a combination of fundaments and thinking for yourself, it isn’t so much that he taught me “how” to draw but pulled it out of me and I have been teaching myself ever since . Larry and I have been friends now for a long time, we have had exhibits together and our lives have crossed in so many ways. You are very lucky to have him as a teacher. I was in an exhibit in Chicago a few years ago out of the 50 artist in this show 18 where former students of Larry Butcher, amazing!

Yup that's him alright! So far out of my three semesters at Delta Colllege, I've had him for a class in two of them, and by the time I'm done at Delta I'll have had him for two more!!

That is a really excellent drawing!!

Thanks! So far I have really enjoyed his classes. He is definately a very good teacher. Before taking the first level of drawing I was really rather bad at drawing, but by the end of the class I'd made a vast improvement. I'm really looking forward to my next two classes .:)

When I was looking for my comment on "occasional angel" after you replied to my comment, I saw a reply that you gave to a guy that sked you why you bother to draw it when you could just take a photograph. Its so strange, but I think that I understand what you meant in your reply. It just has a quality that is not in a photograph. I'm not sure just what that is, but its just a delight to look at these faces. The skin, the eyes - it just gets you inside when you look into it. The hair and the beard is increadible. I suppose it makes sense - Usualy the things that you work for pay off, so I guess that although the click of a camera provides a pretty good result, the purity of the work that you have achieved with your hands is just that bit better. Like I say, I'm not sure exactly what it is, but its amazing. Thanks for doing it and letting us see :D.

your work is positively inspiring; i hope that over the years i may become just half as good as you are =) excellent job as usual, the only thing i could possibly nitpick at a little would be that little chunk of white of eye, the shaded part of his right eye. for some reason i don't feel like it transitions as well from the pupil to the white and that that particular part of the eye seems to be shaded so it's sunken back more and not part of the roundness of the whole eye. perhaps a little bit of the part bordering the pupil could be a little lighter? and also the right part of his collar seems to fuzz a little into his skin. but a lot of this could just be my eyesight, which is terrible -_-;; in any case, the detail in this and the overall picture is fantastic. great artists like you are few and far between =)
