Lazy Summer Day 2 by arisuonpaa Lazy Summer Day 2 by arisuonpaa
This is a repaint of my previous painting from 2006: fav.me/dr3d9w. It works as a nice way to test how much I've progressed during the years.

Everything is painted digitally in Krita. At the final stage I took the painting to ArtRage, applied a canvas texture, and went through the painting with a palette knife to get some variability to the edges. It also helps in taking the painting closer to having that traditional oil painting feel.

I hope you like it. Any comments are always welcome :)

I like the new one better in terms of composition, but the original has it's merits. I'm currently using Krita, but find it difficult to render a canvas texture to the painting, so I see how I might also need to use another program just to do that. Krita brushes are highly customizable, and you can easily get those traditional brush looks, but the canvas itself lacks that texture. Maybe I'm doing something wrong at the onset, and you can actually use Krita to give a canvas texture. I don't really mess with the features that much, and asking about it on google isn't giving any results. Whatever answers I get is more like patterns, etc.

Anyways, I like the variability in values here, how it goes from cold to warm. I do agree with the above poster who said the main object seems to be the sunspot. If you had put more of the light on the fox, either in patches, or in the outline, perhaps it would balance out more with the sunshine on the grass. Overall though, it is not a huge issue; it is more of where the eye is directed at first. People who love paintings are going to want to look at the whole thing, but folks just casually glancing at it might be attracted to that sunspot, and I think that's natural, as it's the warmest value on the entire canvas.

Cool, but I like overall feel of the 2006 a bit more.

Can you point out anything specific that makes it better? :)

Maybe the main thing is that the most bright region here is not the fox but the grass, so the eye focuses here instead of the main object. Also, there are more interesting things in the earlier painting: bird, flowers, insects, more imposing tree. (Anyway, I'm not a professional.)
