Hah! A GO AWAY door mat of sorts. These are awesome... I really need to go through your gallery more often, this bold sci-fi style is so inspiring.

The 'Hidden Base' raises an interesting question. How will these be visually respresented in the game screen. I think the top down view (lul up/down in space) would be a good consistant look for the tactical map. Perhaps you have a INTEL window or something that shows various angles of the units/stations?

The only one of these that's currently going into the game is the pirate fortress, which will be a special version orbital infrastructure like a space station, appearing next to the planet (as in the lower right of this screenshot). Sven and I have talked about how other types of asteroid bases might be implemented, but we haven't settled on an answer yet.

Is there a particular series or individual game that you guys are drawing the most inspiration from for the 4X mechanics?

I was never a big fan of MOO, instead more of a Space Empires sort of guy.
I really liked the individually designed ships with component positioning. I do know a lot of people do actually consider that a bit too micro-managy, and instead wish to limit the option to discrete modules on the ship that can be changed out (e.g. bridge/engine/mission modules) . I'm currious as to what your teams stance on that is.

The tactical combat element is most similar to Master of Orion 2, in which individual ships are controllable and configurable. But rather than the ship hulls being empty boxes that you can fill up with whatever components that fit (as in MOO2), in our system each hull has preset slots for weapons and systems that you can fill appropriate components that you have researched. It's not quite as free-form, but it's slightly less fiddly and allows for more differentiation between the hulls of different races, and even between similar-sized hull options for the same race. It also allows us to do weapon-specific turret swivel and firing animations, rather than having to have beams originate from some generic point in the center of the ship graphic (as was the case in MOO2).

Lol, go away. Best warning ever.

"Didn't you idiots read the sign? No Trespassing!" -Starlancer quote.

Did a great job on these. Especially like the first "hidden base", reminds me a bit of Omega from Mass Effect.

Really cool!  Looking forward to the game!

Also, I might attempt to use these as inspiration for some asteroid bases for my tabletop spaceship games.  Could be neat objectives!

I think there needs to be a rationale for the linking of asteroids for the mining base. I mean why go through the effort to tether them together when you can do hope rock to rock with mobile mining operations. I like the idea of creating a gravity well and then towing smaller asteroids to this spot to be mined/processed.

The true rationale is of course that "it looks distinctive," but I agree with trollsmyth that there's probably a real benefit to having a physical link between the miner's habitat, the mining site, and the ore processing/offloading facility. It surely must be more efficient to run workers in and out on a tram and moving ore to the processing facility on some kind of tube or tram than either having to have some intermediate kind of shuttle between each mining spot, or having to put such facilities on each and every asteroid.

Love the idea of the mining base also daisy-chaining asteroids to a processing and life-support hub.

Oh this is cool. Love all the concepts here - I like how you're working with the different asteroid shapes to give them character.

Looking nice!
I assume there will be regular space stations as well?
Like Military Starbase, Outpost, Trading station and Gas Mining/Refining station for Gas giants and Nebulas? Science Stations?

There are currently military stations and shipyards, and there will be outposts (which are still in the concept phase). Other infrastructure items may be included in the future.

Nebulae aren't currently in the game, and I doubt they will be.
