"..and in the darkest night, men are hungry like pigs, vicious like alligator, and wild like wolves."
mixed media (pencil, ink, acrylic) on 35x90cm wooden panel, 2014.
one of the artworks from my Damsel in Distress solo art exhibition, at Treehouse artspace Kemang, Jakarta.
I am very sorry for the late reply as I don't regularly check my DA account anymore.
Anyway, thank you so much for your kind wishes and birthday greeting, and for the kind
words about my artwork. It's always great to feel that we inspires each other, fellow artists.
It in indeed sad truths, and we have to do whatever we can to prevent or to raise the awareness of it.
The pleasure's all mine, it's wonderful to be able to share my thoughts and works to people from the other
side of the world.
Take care and best regards,
Sometimes I think that it's really hard for you men live and endure with the weight of "be men" , specially when it comes to violence or rapes on women and children...
Thank you for this artwork ❤
But I just wanted to highlight the fact that women in their own way can protect someone
You have been raised by a single mother?
Also a friend of mine is growing a child alone, he is very happy, I and my friends love him very much
(although I don't want to have children)
Yes, but as men, I will also do my best to protect women and children.
You are very much welcome.
I am not saying that only men can protect women and children.
I myself am raised by a single mother. So to me, women is a hero.
What I am trying to say is, it would be great if men's mind are set to protect women and children,
instead of hurting and harassing them.
But of course women can also protect themself, and even protect men and children.
Well you can suggest it as a daily deviation, perhaps?
I hate those kinds of men who looks and treats women like they're pieces of meat. Seriously, I can't stand it when I see a man staring at a woman like he's undressing her in his mind. 2 reasons: 1) It is big disrespect to women folk and 2) It makes women think that all men are pigs or wolves or whatever.
As I improve myself and strive to not objectify women, I discovered within myself that a man's sexual needs or nature is beyond me. I'm a guy and I resent my sexual nature and urge. I feel like looking at women's breasts are imprinted on my biological DNA and resisting is futile, and I really hate myself for it. I just hope and strive to reach the point that one day I will achieve the ability to not be a slave of this effed up man nature. The struggle is real but I know it's going to be worth it.
All that is true.
And the next thing you wrote,
that is also so very true. As a male I too feel that same thing.
Especially because I am an artist so I do like to see the beauty of
woman's body. But then it also made me easier to see it as an artistic shape,
rather than a tool to satisfy my lust.
Maybe you can try that as well.
Your style is great!
Sadly, this kind of situation is happening more often that what we think, especially in common transports like train, metro, etc. The worst being that generally, even if they saw what is happening, people will probably not move to help. Because they are scared, they don't dare, and you have a crowd effect that makes people think: "someone will move" passing the responsability from person to person (it has a name in psychology, I don't remember what it is). I have learnt that it is why to call help in such situation, it is better to design someone directly pointing "You here, help me!" or to scream "Fire!" to make people move. The irony is that in front of a crowd, the 2-3 guys making trouble will run away.
This piece of Art is making a deep echo to me, because I have also lived such kind of experience, with two guys coming out of nowhere, asking me where I was going, insinuating things, with insults barely disguised. I had chance because they finally went away without more trouble, but a lot of things came into my head before: "Will they try to stole me? Hurt me? Could this finish to a sexual assault? How can I defend myself? Will someone help me? etc." and also "Why? Why are they coming to agress me without even knowing who I am? Don't they have anything else to do with their life?".
So, I am glad that people like you exist to put such things into light, to make awareness. I think this is important to educate people and help this kind of situation to stop happenning.
Have you seen the french comic book "Projet Crocodiles"? It deals with harassment and ordinary sexism, I think that could interest you. Here is a link to the Tumblr: projetcrocodiles.tumblr.com/.
Thank you for the kind words, Viseniya.
I can show you more of the artwork from the exhibition. Or perhaps I will post it here later.
What you wrote in your comment is so true, right to the core.
That is a real issue, and it has a very close connection with human psychology, so at the same time it is complicated and simple. Complicated in a way that people feel scared, the crowd effect etc like you said, and simple as in letting out of control and surrender to the animalistic lust.
And it has to stop.
To read that you have experienced similar situation, such a close encounter, it's a life and death situation. Had things went in the bad way, you will probably not be here to give this comment.
It's a blessing for you to be safe, and we need to make things like that to never happen again.
I am sure that there's plenty of people like me exist. For me, I think as an artist, we are not only draw/make an artwork to express ourself, but we also have the responsibility to be aware of our surroundings, and make the artwork for social purposes. Art touches human senses, and with that, art can raise human awareness. Touch the heart, brings up the humanity.
I have tried to go to the "Project Crocodiles" link, but unfortunately, I can't speak French.
But thanks for the suggestion, I will keep note on that comic book.
I would see more with pleasure! You can send me a note if you want. Do as you please.
Yes, I completely agree with you. I think that it is important to show this issues to people. The next step is to educate everyone to be in a better world. To teach everyone, us, how to react in this kind of situations, to help each others and let the fear go away. That is what I found interesting in the "Projet Crocodile" (I can traduce you the texts in english if you want, no problem), they also teach us how to react when you are a victim or if you see someone being attacked. You don't have to be Superman to help someone, there are a lot of things you can do whithout using of violence.
Yes, that is true. For the two guys who caused me trouble, I don't think it would have gone as far as murder, but to be beaten or assaulted, that could have happen. Most of the time, I don't think it is going as far as a killing situation. Even if this can be related in newspapers sometimes, it stays a rare event. But it is always possible to fall on a crazy one, we never know. Things can escalate quickly. Though, I don't want to fall into Fear, in general, the country and the streets are safe. I also strongly believe in education and faith of helping each others, Love, that is inside of us.
I completely agree, actions will help. The important is to not stay silent and raise.
Yes, of course, and I am glad that people like you exist. I am 100% with what you said. I think Art is an expression of our souls and also of our time. Pencils are better than weapons, they can influence people and make the world change. I think about the influence of drawings more than ever with what happened at the Charlie Hebdo last wednesday, genius caricaturists has been killed because they disturbed the islamists (but that is another story).
Exactly. It's education to help control the brain, but we also need something like artwork to touch the heart. Because it has to be the combination of two, head and heart, mind and feeling. That's what make us human.
I'd love it if you can traduce the texts in English, if it's no problem for you. Thank you so much.. take your time, though, you can do it anytime you're free.
You are correct, with those people, we can never predict or guess what's coming next. In any way, I am grateful you are alright. And it's good to know that you are a brave woman.
Yes, I am shocked of what happened at the Charlie Hebdo. It is very painful, and especially for us, because we wield the same weapon, pencil and pen that is. Extremists, whatever their beliefs, is never a good thing. And what they've done actually made us stronger and sparks more spirit of togetherness and struggling against violence. And to quote you, "we shall not fall into fear".
I agree with you. Artwork is a part of education in my opinion, because it touches the heart, as you said. I don't see education as making an obligation of people to think this way or that way, but on the contrary, to think by themselves and have their thoughts combined with what they feel, it is all complementary. Anyway, we are on the same page
No problem, that's a pleasure! ^_^
Yes, I am grateful too. Thank you for your kind words
Yes, it shocked everyone. They touched a huge symbol: Freedom of speech; and when you know that the France's national motto is "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" ("Liberty, equality, fraternity"), it's even deeper. I can only agree more with you about the extremists, it always goes wrong. They do wrong to themselves and their religion, because people become more and more islamophobic with all that happens and confusions are made, they are making racism increasing by what they do too. Nationalism and extreme-right politic are increasing in France and other countries of Europe, as a reaction and I just hope that we will not fall into civil war or any kind of barbary, in the end. That's why I am glad about the "Je suis Charlie" movement and how global it became, that means we are all together and will not let the terrorists bring terror and division as they are trying to do. As you said, it brings people together. Yes, "we shall not fall into fear"
What you wrote about the current condition is so true.
People nowadays, they are smarter, and more open minded, so it's going to take more than that to bring France, and the whole world down.
Some people just want to see the world burn, but we shall not fall into fear.
The thing about religion is, all religions are good, it teaches wisdom and all the good things,
but it also has the risk of creating extremists when it's not properly understood.
Yes, you are right about religions, there are always messages of love and what some lunatics seem to forget is that you are must not kill other human beings.
You are also right about the extremists. I have read a quote from Guy Gilbert about it, this morning: "In all religions, there are believers and extremists, the difference is that the extremists put God at their service, while believers put themselves in the service of God", I found it so true. Though, I am sure that Love will prevail in the end.
And yes, I think personally we have to have faith,
about love and about humanity.
That's what makes us keep on going, living our daily life.
If there's no faith, there will be no point of all this.
So yeah, I like it that you have your own faith,
that love will prevail in the end.
I think so too. This world might not be a kind place,
there will always be evil and injustice,
but in every humanity, there is love,
and that will make us survive.
Amazing idea^^ Love it!
and they're required to wear a sexy uniform. And the girl in the artwork did try to cover it by wearing a jacket.
However, sometimes when you sleep, you have no control of what you do, if you feel hot, you open the jacket.
And you just don't realize that because you're sleeping.
The point is, we can't blame women for what they wear.
We should put more attention into controlling ourself,
being an admirable human being by not behaving like animals.
