Back to Middle-earth Month 2013

Full rules for Back to Middle-earth Month 2013 - Expedition in the Abecedarium: B2MeM 2013 - Expedition in the AbecedariumThis year, our group is participating in the B2MeM event again! It is a joint event of several groups, so the "meeting place" of all of them is this official livejournal: http://b2mem.livejournal.com - it is the place to follow the actual happening in the event, and if you have any questions, address them there! (you don't need a LJ account to do that)
In this group, we have a special folder where you can submit you responses to the prompts: https://arda-inspired.deviantart.com/gallery/35172413

Middle-earth is full of hunters. The Vala Oromë found the first people of Middle-earth while hunting, and hunters have remained central to the stories since. Whether hunting for an Arkenstone or a band of Orcs or for truth and justice, Tolkien’s world is full of hunts for things both physical and metaphorical. Back-to-Middle-earth Month Scavenger Hunt: Expedition in the Abecedarium seeks to encourage creativity in the Tolkien fandom through a “quote scavenger hunt

Original LJ post: b2mem.livejournal.com/200004.h… (My apologies for posting this one day late. I was busy with posting teitho stories and other things...)

And so it begins! Below the cut is the first day's challenge for B2MeM 2013.

A reminder about this year's format ... Every year, we mod-types struggle to offer a challenge that meets the needs of those who like to write or create something every day, those who want to write one or a few longer pieces, and everyone in between. This year, keiliss made a suggestion that we really liked because it helped us to do just that.

:bulletblack: On the first day of the challenge (today!), we will offer a wealth of prompts to get everyone started. If you want to write a longer piece, hopefully one of these will inspire you to get started! If you like to write something short every day, grab one or a few that you like and run with it! We have collected twenty-six quotes based around twenty-six different themes.

:bulletblack: In the days that follow, we will post additional prompts. You may use and combine these however you wish. Use them to create something new or shape your longer work in a new direction. You are not, of course, required to use any particular prompts offered. If you want to work with just one prompt for the whole month, that's perfectly acceptable. If you only have time for one piece, you're just as welcome as if you had time for one hundred. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of using the prompts how they work best for you. The goal for this month is to encourage creativity in the Tolkien fandom. Each will arrive at that goal by her or his own road! :)

Remember, you can combine prompts to your heart's content, and there are no deadlines this year, so feel free to revisit prompts you might have missed.

You can post your responses to the prompts in our B2MeM folder arda-inspired.deviantart.com/g…
You can also post them, or links to them, in the B2MeM livejournal. The posting guidelines are here: b2mem.livejournal.com/199802.h…

This year's challenge is a scavenger hunt. First, locate the quote in the books, then we encourage you to read the section around it or even the full chapter that contains it. Use that reading as your inspiration. Your piece does not have to include the scene the quote comes from. You might create something to do with a character in the scene, the place the scene is set, the theme, the time period in history, or whatever inspires you about that section of the book. And who knows what else you might discover during the search that tickles your muses!

Without further ado, the first day's prompts:

B2MeM 2013 Day One--ArchetypesArchetypes
“There cannot be any 'story' without a fall – all stories are ultimately about the fall – at least not for human minds as we know them and have them.”

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Beauty   Beauty
"‘For myself,' said Faramir, 'I would see the White Tree in flower again in the courts of the kings, and the Silver Crown return, and Minas Tirith in peace: Minas Anor again as of old, full of light, high and fair, beautiful as a queen among other queens: not a mistress of many slaves, nay, not even a kind mistress of willing slaves. War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend: the city of the Men of Númenor; and I would have her loved for her memory, her ancientry, her beauty, and her present wisdom. Not feared, save as men may fear the dignity of a man, old and wise."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Courage Courage
"He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking that Oromë himself was come: for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar.”

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Discovery Discovery
"‘But Sméagol returned alone; and he found that none of his family could see him, when he was wearing the ring. He was very pleased with his discovery and he concealed it; and he used it to find out secrets, and he put his knowledge to crooked and malicious uses. He became sharp-eyed and keen-eared for all that was hurtful The ring had given him power according to his stature. It is not to be wondered at that he became very unpopular and was shunned by all his relations.’"

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Escape   Escape
“They will think we had a very strong magic to pass through all those locked doors and disappear.”

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Friendship   Friendship
"Long before, in the bliss of Valinor, before Melkor was unchained, or lies came between them, Fingon had been close in friendship with Maedhros; and though he knew not yet that Maedhros had not forgotten him at the burning of the ships, the thought of their ancient friendship stung his heart. Therefore he dared a deed which is justly renowned among the feats of the princes of the Noldor: alone, and without the counsel of any, he set forth in search of Maedhros; and aided by the very darkness that Morgoth had made he came unseen into the fastness of his foes."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Good vs. Evil   Good vs. Evil
"The meeting of the hosts of the West and of the North is named the Great Battle, and the War of Wrath. There was marshalled the whole power of the Throne of Morgoth, and it had become great beyond count, so that Anfauglith could not contain it; and all the North was aflame with war."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Heroism Heroism
"At that time Nimloth was dark and bore no bloom, for it was late in the autumn, and its winter was nigh; and Isildur passed through the guards and took from the Tree a fruit that hung upon it, and turned to go. But the guard was aroused, and he was assailed, and fought his way out, receiving many wounds; and he escaped, and because he was disguised it was not discovered who had laid hands on the Tree. But Isildur came at last hardly back to Rómenna and delivered the fruit to the hands of Amandil, ere his strength failed him."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Inner vs. Outer Strength Inner vs. Outer Strength
"A sudden understanding, a pity mixed with horror, welled up in Bilbo's heart: a glimpse of endless unmarked days without light or hope of betterment, hard stone, cold fish, sneaking and whispering. All these thoughts passed in a flash of a second. He trembled. And then quite suddenly in another flash, as if lifted by a new strength and resolve, he leaped."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Judgment Judgment
“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.”

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Knowledge vs. Ignorance Knowledge vs. Ignorance
"Then Túrin said: 'Perhaps it is better not to tell what you wish, if you cannot have it. But I wish, Labadal, that I were one of the Eldar. Then Lalaith might come back, and I should be here, even if she were long away. I shall go as a soldier with an Elf-king as soon as I am able, as you did, Labadal.'

'You may learn much of them,' said Sador, and he sighed. 'They are a fair folk and wonderful, and they have a power over the hearts of Men. And yet I think sometimes that it might have been better if we had never met them, but had walked in lowlier ways. For already they are ancient in knowledge; and they are proud and enduring. In their light we are dimmed, or we burn with too quick a flame, and the weight of our doom lies the heavier on us.'"

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Loss of Innocence Loss of Innocence
"Then Glaurung died, and the veil of his malice was taken from her, and she remembered all the days of her life. Looking down upon Túrin she cried: 'Farewell, O twice beloved! A Túrin Turambar turun ambartanen: master of doom by doom mastered! O happy to be dead!' Then Brandir who had heard all, standing stricken upon the edge of ruin, hastened towards her; but she ran from him distraught with horror and anguish, and coming to the brink of Cabed-en-Aras she cast herself over, and was lost in the wild water."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Materialism   Materialism
"If the elf-king had a weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, he was ever eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lords of old."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Names Names
"In the hour of birth, or on some other occasion of moment, the mother might give a name to her child, indicating some dominant feature of its nature as perceived by her, or some foresight of its special fate."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Overcoming Obstacles Overcoming Obstacles
"'Come on, you miserable sluggard!' Sam cried to himself. `Now for it!' He drew Sting and ran towards the open gate. But just as he was about to pass under its great arch he felt a shock: as if he had run into some web like Shelob's, only invisible. He could see no obstacle, but something too strong for his will to overcome barred the way. He looked about, and then within the shadow of the gate he saw the Two Watchers."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Pride Pride
"Then Pippin looked the old man in the eye, for pride stirred strangely within him, still stung by the scorn and suspicion in that cold voice. 'Little service, no doubt, will so great a lord of Men think to find in a hobbit, a halfling from the northern Shire; yet such as it is, I will offer it, in payment of my debt.' Twitching aside his grey cloak, Pippin drew forth his small sword and laid it at Denethor's feet."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Quests Quests
"Thorin was too wretched to be angry any longer at his misfortunes, and was even beginning to think of telling the king all about his treasure and his quest (which shows how low-spirited he had become), when he heard Bilbo's little voice at his keyhole."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Rebellion Rebellion
"But fearing that the other Valar might blame his work, he wrought in secret: and he made first the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves in a hall under the mountains in Middle-earth."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Sacrifice Sacrifice
"'So that was the job I felt I had to do when I started,' thought Sam: 'to help Mr. Frodo to the last step and then die with him? Well, if that is the job then I must do it.'"

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Tradition Tradition
"The host of Morgoth came over the northern hills where the height was greatest and the watch least vigilant, and it came at night upon a time of festival, when all the people of Gondolin were upon the walls to await the rising sun, and sing their songs at its uplifting; for the morrow was the great feast that they named the Gates of Summer."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Unity Unity
"And it seemed at last that there were two musics progressing at one time before the seat of Ilúvatar, and they were utterly at variance. The one was deep and wide and beautiful, but slow and blended with an immeasurable sorrow, from which its beauty chiefly came. The other had now achieved a unity of its own; but it was loud, and vain, and endlessly repeated; and it had little harmony, but rather a clamorous unison as of many trumpets braying upon a few notes. And it essayed to drown the other music by the violence of its voice, but it seemed that its most triumphant notes were taken by the other and woven into its own solemn pattern."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Vanity Vanity
"He it was that now rode out, and with him came only a small company of black-harnessed soldiery, and a single banner, black but bearing on it in red the Evil Eye. Now halting a few paces before the Captains of the West he looked them up and down and laughed.

'Is there anyone in this rout with authority to treat with me?' he asked. 'Or indeed with wit to understand me? Not thou at least!' he mocked, turning to Aragorn with scorn. 'It needs more to make a king than a piece of elvish glass, or a rabble such as this. Why, any brigand of the hills can show as good a following!'"

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Wisdom Wisdom
"And this the Valar did, desiring to amend the errors of old, especially that they had attempted to guard and seclude the Eldar by their own might and glory fully revealed; whereas now their emissaries were forbidden to reveal themselves in forms of majesty, or to seek to rule the wills of Men and Elves by open display of power, but coming in shapes weak and humble were bidden to advise and persuade Men and Elves to good, and to seek to unite in love and understanding all those whom Sauron, should he come again, would endeavour to dominate and corrupt."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Xenophobia   Xenophobia
"Then there arose some among us who said openly in their despair: 'Now we know at last who lied, and who desired to devour us. Not the first Voice. It is the Master that we have taken who is the Darkness; and he did not come forth from it, as he said, but he dwells in it. We will serve him no longer! He is our Enemy.' Then in fear lest he should hear them and punish us all, we slew them, if we could; and those that fled we hunted; and if any were caught, our masters, his friends, commanded that they should be taken to the House and there done to death by fire."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Youth Youth
"But there was a maiden named Nellas, who lived in the woods; and at Melian's bidding she would follow Túrin if he strayed in the forest, and often she met him there, as it were by chance. From Nellas Túrin learned much concerning the ways and the wild things of Doriath, and she taught him to speak the Sindarin tongue after the manner of the ancient realm, older, and more courteous, and richer in beautiful words. Thus for a little while his mood was lightened, until he fell again under shadow, and that friendship passed like a morning of spring. For Nellas did not go to Menegroth, and was unwilling ever to walk under roofs of stone; so that as Túrin's boyhood passed and he turned his thoughts to the deeds of men, he saw her less and less often, and at last called for her no more."

B2MeM 2013 Day One--Zeal Zeal
"Be he friend or foe or foul offspring
of Morgoth Bauglir, be he mortal dark
that in after days on earth shall dwell,
shall no law nor love nor league of Gods,
no might nor mercy, not moveless fate,
defend him for ever from the fierce vengeance
of the sons of Feanor, whoso seize or steal
or finding keep the fair enchanted
globes of crystal whose glory dies not,
the Silmarils. We have sworn for ever!"
