Trifonic

Ninth Wave - 2012

Emergence - 2008

Origin Point:
United States

Sounds Like:
IDM, Electronica, Downtempo, Post Rock, Dubstep, Experimental

The brothers Trifon come from two radically different backgrounds; one is a classically trained metal guitarist while the other produces DJ beats, but together they have a sound that is something special. Usually, when an artist attempts to bridge the gap between electronic and acoustic instruments the results are trite at best, but here there's a sound that's somewhere between post-rock and IDM - passing through many different aesthetics on the way. Their stand-out track for me is Parks On Fire from Emergence, a behemoth of dub and glitch and Four Tet-inspired key sounds, all backed up with a solid acoustic drum sound.

Their second release diverges from the fusion sound a little, featuring more in the way of a glitch and dubstep-inspired aesthetic. However, it is still a fine listen and certainly nothing like the mundane 'filthstep' or the shocking 'brostep' that's proliferated the genre in the past few years. As an aside, to hear an example of what I call 'goodstep' check out Guido's Anedia - but be sure to listen with earphones else you'll miss the bass beats dropped right down in the mix. As for the track itself, it mashes together modern classical aesthetics and electronica in a manner not entirely dissimilar to Vowels or Doom Sticks from Ulver's Quick Fix Of Melancholy EP.

To listen to their music, simply click on the album covers to be taken to their respective pages. If you've any recommendations based on this artist, or wish to promote some music that you yourself enjoy, please do so in the comments. Maybe I'll end up enjoying something enough to feature it myself.
