Battle Of Mice

A Day Of Nights - 2006

Origin Point:
United States

Sounds Like:
Post Metal, Sludge, Progressive, Experimental, Post Rock, Avantgarde

Composed of a motley assortment of musicians whose main acts range from Neurosis to Fugees, the short-lived Battle Of Mice is in many ways a musical oddity. Sounding rather like having one's head pushed into a blender by angry cats, their frenetic post-metal sound is emphasised by the truly schizoid vocal performance of Julie Christmas: from vaguely twisted sing-song melodies to screaming curses through whispered incantations and haunting choral passages, she steals the show and ensures that their only full release, A Day Of Nights, is never close to being easy-listening. This is most evident towards the end of the playing order, with a harrowing 911 call halfway through At The Base Of The Giant's Throat further fracturing an already disturbing aesthetic.

To listen to their music, simply click on the album covers to be taken to their respective pages. This isn't for everyone, but it's moving material for those who acquire the taste for it.

Now, I know the discussion of music can be an emotionally charged subject for some people, but I'm not claiming that anything is better than anything else. This is no more than a soap-box for me to promote music that I enjoy; maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. That's fine.

If you've any recommendations based on this artist, or wish to promote some music that you yourself enjoy, please do so in the comments. Maybe I'll end up enjoying something enough to feature it myself.
