Post Rock, Instrumental, Math Rock, Progressive, Ambient
This week features an obscure Chicago-based act whose sound got a whole lot more difficult to find with the emergence of a pop-icon namesake in recent years. Del Rey play out a great post-rock sound, with their latest release Immemorial being highly recommended. Their earlier material shares a lot of sonic cues with old Mogwai tunes and the sort of slowcore that evolved from the likes of Slint and Big Black, and while listenable, isn't quite on the same level as their newer work. This bodes well, as they're currently recording a new album.
To listen to their music, simply click on the album covers to be taken to their respective pages. Please excuse the motley collection of sources this week; their discography is impossible to find online to stream. The Pyramid For The Living play-list is missing two tracks, but I'm sure they can be found elsewhere if you're invested enough in their sound.
Now, I know the discussion of music can be an emotionally charged subject for some people, but I'm not claiming that anything is better than anything else. This is no more than a soap-box for me to promote music that I enjoy; maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. That's fine.
If you've any recommendations based on this artist, or wish to promote some music that you yourself enjoy, please do so in the comments. Maybe I'll end up enjoying something enough to feature it myself.
