An Introduction

Hallo and welcome to my last Community Relations newsletter for Abstract & Surreal Photography, written for communityrelations. Here you'll find relevant information from the last two months of abstract and surreal activity, as well as information about my work and features. As always, I shall direct your attention to my Roadmap, and my Daily Deviation Guidelines; two documents that one should keep a keen eye on. The former conveniently indexes all my previous journal entries, while the latter provides useful information regarding Daily Deviation suggestions. It also links through to an editorial I published back in December regarding controversy around Daily Deviation features.

A bi-monthly round-up of news, contests and events in the Abstract & Surreal category, written for the official Community Relations newsletter. These will also form the basis of bi-monthly road-maps of their own, going into more detail than is presented here.

If you're thinking about submitting a piece of art for consideration as a Daily Deviation, please consider the following:
I am the CV for Abstract and Surreal photography: this means that I will only consider work that is situated in either of these categories. If the piece you're wishing to suggest is not categorised in Abstract or Surreal photography, please consult this list of Community Volunteers to ascertain who an appropriate recipient would be.
To make a suggestion, just drop me a note with the subject line of DD Suggestion. Include the :thumb#########: code for the piece, which can be found to the right-hand sid
A Note on Daily Deviation FeaturesAt ten features into my tenure as Community Volunteer for Abstract & Surreal Photography I am noticing a certain trend in response to abstract and surreal Daily Deviations. I shall address some of the recurring themes here, and hopefully answer some questions along the way. At this point I would like to mention that I am talking about a small and vocal minority, and I sincerely thank the overwhelming majority for supporting the featured artists and their work. You're what makes this site such a great community.
With that said, let's get to the troublesome themes I am coming across.
The "This is crap!" Argument
As an observer and a critic, you're entitled to think that something isn't very good. However, exclaiming as such on the comments of a piece of work that an artist has spent time and energy creating is not only counter-productive, but rude and insulting, especially if it's not followed up with some advice about how you think they could make their

General News

In an attempt to chronicle all relevant activity within the abstract and surreal community, I've taken to publishing and maintaining a monthly pin-board that provides a single point of access for anyone wishing to learn about what's going on: be sure to check them out for archival information regarding group and artist projects. These articles also feature news about my Forum Thumbshare, which is a monthly drive to encourage people to share their abstract and surreal works, and the works of others that they particularly enjoy. So far this has been a successful venture; I am glad to see so many people participating each month.

Abstract/Surreal Pinboard: September 2013Hallo everyone, and welcome to September. The autumnal weather is closing here in the Northern hemisphere, with the most photogenic season almost upon us.
This is just a short piece of correspondence to let you know about some current Community Relations-led events that might be of interest and relevance to the Abstract & Surreal community. Feel free to take part, or to inform me of other abstract and surreal happenings that you know of or are involved with: I'll be sure to update this journal to include them here.
Monthly Photography Critique Thread
Watched over by Kaz-D and 3wyl, this is a monthly initiative to get people to comment and particularly critique on the works of others. It also offers artists the chance to submit one piece of their own work for critique by their peers. This is a worthwhile cause, and I feel it may be useful to members of the abstract and surreal community whose work struggles to garner feedback. The September edi

Daily Deviations

As Community Volunteer for Abstract and Surreal Photography, I publish Daily Deviation features each and every day. At the end of each month I collate these into reports, and since the last update there have been two of those. Additionally, I have a category in my favourites which exhibits, together, all the pieces that I have featured. As always, I am open to Daily Deviation suggestions, but please follow the guidelines I have set out and don't be discouraged if I don't reply to your note; being a CV is like spinning plates, and some forms of correspondence need to take priority over others.

Daily Deviation Report: August 2013Hallo, and welcome to the August edition of my Daily Deviation Report. What follows is a comprehensive feature of the Daily Deviations that I featured during the month of August 2013 in the Abstract and Surreal Photography categories.
In terms of this collection, all of these images caught my eye in some way; whether it be through technical perfection, compositional intrigue, or the concept within. I am proud to present these works, and I applaud the relevant artists for their dedication and inspiration.

Friday Feature

Since the last newsletter, a large number of Friday Features have been released. These journals feature work both within and outwith the abstract and surreal community, and cover media outside of photography. Affiliated with this series is my Forum Thumbshare series, and at the end of each month a special feature is published which contains the best work submitted in each month's edition. There have also been a number of preview editions, which looked at the work of a particular artist or style.

Saturday Spotlight

My Saturday Spotlight series has become, perhaps, my most popular and well-received action since starting my tenure as Abstract and Surreal Community Volunteer. Each week, I interview a prominent member of the abstract and surreal community, and invite each artist to share their thoughts and opinions on the genre and their work. While it is the most time-consuming aspect of my role, it is definitely the most rewarding and I am glad that it's being enjoyed by the rest of the community: it was originally planned only to be a monthly feature running for one year, but recently I published my 38th edition and there's no end in sight just yet!

> Please introduce yourself, in your own words. What are your interests?
If I must use my own words, rather than those from one of our shared languages, I will say a few words using the binary alphabet:
Aaaaa aaa aaa aaa aaaaa
So there we have a minimalist alphabet; a primitive language, but not without a degree of expressive quality. Now for something more abstract. Using '+' for the space and an underscore as the single letter:
_____+___+___+___+_____
Something abstract in my very own words. Does it say anything about me? Attempting something more surreal (if not dada), I will

My name is Edgar, and at this time I am working under the name Edgar Invoker. The main area of my interests lie in working with unconscious and abstract images.
> Where did you begin with artistic endeavours? How did you come across Abstraction or Surrealism?
The concept of lucid dreaming is where my passion for working in this style began. In the process of studying this phenomenon I have come to express these ideas through the connection of surrealism and abstraction of form.

> Where did you begin with artistic endeavours? How did you come across Abstraction or Surrealism?
I do not consider myself an artist, and it seems to me that surrealism and abstractionism have always been the best means of expression of the inexpressible. As far as I can remember I've always been strangely attracted to this kind of art; through Brassai, Dora Maar, Jean

My name is Cyril Berthault-Jacquier. I'm French, and I have lived in Brussels for the last ten years. I have frequented deviantART for more than ten years, but I have had multiple accounts in that time. I'm passionate about art in general; in photography, painting, and so on. I'm also a compulsive reader, with a particular taste for contemporary Japanese literature. That's why I chose "KizukiTamura" as a pseudonym here: Kizuki Tamura is a character from a book by Haruki Murakami.

I'm 31; I live in Québec, Canada, and French is my first language. I'm interested in the arts: mostly visual arts (including photography) and literature, and psychology.
> Where did you begin with artistic endeavours? How did you come across Abstraction or Surrealism?
As I child I always enjoyed drawing and painting, even if I wasn't particularly talented. Additionally, reading novels is what helped me stay sane in difficult moments; something which I had my share of as a child.

I am Maxime, and I'm 21. I come from France, torn between the north (where I come from) and the south (where I live). I am an English student, with a deep passion for nature, history, mythology, video games, and music - but first and foremost for J.R.R Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. I don't usually believe there are things more relevant than this to introduce myself.

I am a writer based in India, and live in a suburb of Delhi. I take photographs as a hobby. My main interests are spiritual growth through inner work, self-reflection, meditation, mindfulness, and prayer - that is what my writings are about - and also to some extent photography. Not as a construct that I find comfort in, but just because I want create something that is creative, looks different, or somehow stands out. The standard boilerplate is that I am a technologist, a wonk, and an artist. I’ve been practicing at that last role (read: making some or all of my income via creative output) for over 20 years. My interests are sort-of all over the map, but on paper probably make as much or as little sense as those of anyone else. Because I like Top-X lists, here's one:

Sunday Soundcheck

Planned to be something to end the week in a light-hearted manner, this series has proven to be surprisingly popular, and with the music I am featuring there is certainly a connection to the abstract and surreal genre; I tend to enjoy artists whose sound is either somewhat deconstructed or rebuilt beyond recognition. Nonetheless, this is a slightly off-topic look back at the journals that have been published since the last update. Maybe you'll find something you'll enjoy. Who knows?

The 39th edition of the Sunday Soundcheck traverses across the Atlantic to South Africa and the band Bateleur; named after an indigenous eagle, their sound soars and peaks in an appropriately dynamic fashion. Releasing only two EPs to date, their sound relies heavily on strong rhythm and use of brass instruments, making for an engaging post-rock listen.
Recommended is the track Twins from Cargo Cults.

Aereogramme, with a cameo appearance from ISIS, feature in the 40th edition of the Sunday Soundcheck.
An enigmatic outfit who always managed to avoid any sort of commercial success through their years of incessant touring, Aereogramme released two albums in the early 2000s that introduced their sound: influenced in equal parts by Mogwai and crushing metal passages more akin to doom metal than indie rock. These early releases are somewhat spotty in consistency, but it all came together in 2004 with S

Giant Squid is one of those acts that are practically impossible to categorise. Their salty, oceanic blend of sludge and doom-laden rock and a scatter-shot approach to instrumental selection and vocal delivery produces a varied sound that refuses to wear thin, even after repeated listens.
Their first release, Metridium Field, was first published in 2004 but was re-worked and re-released in 2006 through The End Records as Metridium Fields. It carries a frantic an

Lost Souls - 2000
Origin Point:
United Kingdom
Sounds Like:
Indie Rock, Space Rock, Post Britpop, Shoegaze, Progressive
Doves is a band often overlooked, but is one with quite a story to tell.
The story of the band starts in the late 1980s and early 1990s, where the members were known as Sub Sub, a reasonably successful club dance act. However, in 1996 their studio burnt to the ground, taking all their recordings with it. The foundation of Doves comes from this disaster, and the sound of their first release, Lost Souls, certainly reflects that. It's a dark, brooding, nocturnal collection of sounds with a dense, meandering, yet vaguely claustrophobic density of guitars and reverb. As with Radiohead's OK Computer a few year

Lander Configurations

Of Smoke & Fire - 2011
Origin Point:
Australia
Sounds Like:
Post Rock, Ambient, Slowcore, Shoegaze, Indie, Experimental
The 44th edition of the Sunday Soundcheck looks at an obscure act from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
Lander Configurations have only released one album to date, the 2011 Of Smoke & Fire. However, the expansive maturity of their sound belies the fact that this is the only entry in their discography. Carefully weaving an aesthetic somewhere between the usual crescendo-compositions of post-rock and the slow, brooding rhythms of slowcore, the band is an engaging listen from beginning to end. Primarily instrumental, they utilise vocals far back in the mix from time to time and, unlike many other acts who've followed the same approach in recent years, they do so without sounding contrived or obnoxiously em

Origin Point:

Sounds Like:

Sprawling post-rock from the Swiss mountains.
Equus is an obscure act that has only released two albums to date; however, their sound is remarkably astute within the genre of instrumental music. Their début is a sprawling, hypnotic ocean of a record, tinged as much by 1970s progressive bands as much as anything contemporary. Their second release changes direction substantially, forging a similar path to the offbeat releases of This Will Destroy You and Year Of No Light with a silent film-score composition that borders on drone and deconstructed ambient rhythm. Ethereal post-rock from the southernmost fields of England.
Yndi Halda is an act of few compositions, and only one official release. However, their début contains four tracks of masterful post-rock; beautifully-crafted with wistful cinematic progressions and a heavy use of classical stringed instruments, resulting in a captivating listen from beginning to end. Making extensive use of quiet, almost silent sections - most notably the two minutes of silence at the start of their first track that slowly bleeds into a flowering of emotive sound - these four songs come together to form an entire suite of music that lasts the best part of an hour.
It's essential listening for any follower of the genre, and a f
