...wow. The thumb view in the file upload makes it look really creepy...and y'know what else? You know you've been working with digital media too long when you lay down paint in the wrong spot and think "undo" and nothing happens. -_-
Hrm. and the scanner ate some colours, of course. The highlights in the mane are a seafoam green. Not quite as white as they appear here. The scanner's also reminding me that I should probably gesso out the texture of the canvas...

Um. Anyhow...did this for *Dianae's mythology contest, linked here: [link] Finished just in time! Woo!!!!

This is a darker take on the kelpie of Scottish mythology. My research on the stories turned up two varieties. The mischievous white horse that likes to dunk people in their river and the darker one reputed to drown people for dinner. Some variations said they were all otherwise normal looking horses, some said they were black with serpents in their forever dripping manes.

Worked on this on and off for about a week or two.
Acrylic on 10X20 inch canvas.

Working on a book and wanted a visual representation of what a kelpie was in case anyone asked.  This is almost exactly what I was looking for. Will give credit where credit is due and ask permission before any use. Love it !

^.^ Thanks! Glad you like it! One of these days, I would love to figure out how to make some light transitions visible. The painting's actually kind of creepy in real life especially at night when most the colors get knocked back except for the eyes and the moon. *lol* They both glow under black light, too.

Ah ok. Thanks. I probably won't join. That's the one horse image I've done in over 10 years and the ones from back then aren't even worth a glance in comparison. *lol*

*grins* Oh yes indeedy. The painting hangs just inside the door near the light switch so that it's right there when someone comes in and turns on the lights. I should hang it closer to the switch. Hehe. Oh...hey! Or better yet....I need to make the head of some hideous beast so you have to reach into its mouth to turn on the lights!!!! *bounce* Hrm...Well, that's another project I should tend to now...urgh

as I was reading this and you mentioned it was by the light swtich I immediately thought about having to reach into some beastie's mouth to hit the switch. or maybe I just read faster than I think I do, heh. Anyway its a pretty bad ass idea :D

*lol* Aye, now I just need to figure out what to make it out of that it will both be light enough to not pull a chunk out of the wall and strong enough to withstand the curious beaks of birds.

I like your description, and yes i do know the feeling of sitting looking at your paint and thinking 'undo' and nothing happens

*nods*

there was another entry that said they had some color problems when transfering it to the computer... they upped the saturation and fixed the problem.. perhaps that could help?

*lol*

I think I tried that and a lot of magenta showed up. *shrugs* I dunno. Might have something to do either with me working with a limited palatte (4 colours, I think?) and some of of them being atypical colours that folks don't usually use...like process cyan. *lol* I'll have to do more paintings in those colours and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!

On a later date, when I figure out how to rig a set up to do it, I'm going to try shooting a pic of it....one lit with a full spectrum light and another just daylight. They're both very different views just looking at it under those light conditions. I'll see what shows up on the camera. :P

Although the body anatomy of the horse is a but odd, I love the dark colours, the detail in the eyes, water and moon....

*lol* Yeah, it's my first horse painting. The chest could do with a little work and a narrower face.
