Diversity: we need to change mind sets
We need be aware that diversity is not about ticking boxes and having a superficial make over. Diversity can truly come about by changing people's mind sets and by acknowledging that fashion is truly global, an industry and a  creative expression of  different cultures and societies perceived to be  on an equal footing. In the light of what global capitalist expansion is about this equality is often no more than wishful thinking.
But there is another aspect that needs to be considered, that of perceptions of beauty and beauty standards, something that is very relevant to modelling.
A recent article in the Business of Fashion discussed the rise of Indian models on the international scene. This is clearly tied, says the author, to the growth  of the fashion industry in a country such as India, where there is an economically powerful middle class and a strong demand for luxury goods. Yet at some point, in the original version of the article

Interests

Today is my eighth anniversary with my current trucking company.  I can’t believe how these years have flown by. Lisa and I have now spent over half of our marriage on the truck.  Trucking has been good to us but it has come at a huge sacrifice.  We have missed many family event, birthdays, weddings, funerals, missed our church, getting showers every day, missed our comfy bed at home, family friends, good food, art events, and I have missed my studio dearly.  However, trucking has allowed us to travel the USA and get paid for it. We have made many friends on the road at truck stops, at our terminal, and all over. I’ve taken thousand of photos of the gorgeous vistas we are able to see every day.  Plus, I’ve had the money and opportunity to hire many nude models for photo shoots.  That wouldn’t have happened if we were still sitting in front of computers in cubicle land.

The 24th was also Lisa’s 45th birthday.  People are still surprised when she tells them her age.  It happened just the other day when she was talking to a clerk at a truck stop.  Life on the road has aged us.  When I look at the photos of us from our first year on the road, it is almost like looking at my high school yearbook.  Speaking of high school, my 20th class reunion was this summer.  I didn’t go. We were on the road.  But still, I wouldn’t have gone even if we were home.  Lisa didn’t go to hers either.

It has been nearly a year since I met the Shanghai camera crew at Cadillac Ranch.  I still haven’t received my copy of the documentary.  Maybe they forgot about me.

I’m still shooting photos on the road and hiring nude models.  This summer I had 4 photo shoots with 5 models.  I had a second shoot with Nika, one with Scarlett who posed with another model who is a burlesque dancer.  And I had a shoot and a lifecasting session with a gorgeous young woman who was my dream model in the flesh.  We had a deep connection and have become good friends.  Unfortunately, the lifecasting session became a plaster disaster!!  But at least my materials didn’t go bad sitting in the basement for 8 years.  It was much better to waste them on a session gone wrong than go bad on the shelf.

I have many new updates on my Fine Art America website including new nudes not posted here on deviant ART. You can visit my site here: fineartamerica.com/profiles/an…

They have also created a site for me at Pixels.com which has even more products for sale featuring my art. You can see it here: pixels.com/profiles/andrew-cha…

This summer I sold my first print on FAA and recently sold my second.  They were of my mixed media paintings Reclining Zaftig 2 and 3 Reclining Nudes.  I was elated to finally sell a print, and to have the print be of a painting, not a nude photograph.  I have always felt my art was taking a new and good direction with those pieces.  Unfortunately I was on the road not long after finishing them.  Other paintings in that style are still unfinished and untouched in my studio. Still, I hope my nude photos sell as well.  It would be nice to actually start making money from my art.

One last thing, I listened to the Writer’s Almanac yesterday and hear it was Shel Silverstein’s birthday. writersalmanac.org/note/sep-25…  He is my favorite poet.  We memorized some of his poems in 3rd grade. I still remember the one I had to recite after all these years. Thank you Mrs. Dawson!  Last winter at a truck stop in Detroit, MI, I found 3 hardback books of Silverstein’s poems.  They were on a table of used books.  I got them for $5 each! For the next few days, I was reading poems to Lisa while she drove.  Fun times!

I have more I wanted to write about but this post is getting long enough.  I’ll save those for a later date.
