Being huge Clarke fans, Drell-7 and I decided to try to design a Leonov that was true to the description in Clarke's original novel. "The Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was not a thing of beauty; but few spacecraft ever were. ... Apart from the four huge propellant tanks that would be dropped off as soon as transfer orbit was achieved, Leonov was surprisingly small. From heat shield to drive units was less that fifty meters." While the movie version may have become something of an icon, it doesn't really mesh with the ship design that Clarke original designed. Nor is it very much in the look of Russian aerospace engineering. So here is our gallery, with accompanying descriptive text and development notes.
