Some People Ignore Us, But -

Tue Aug 1, 2017, 11:11 PM
I'd imagine a majority of people on this site, myself certainly and unashamedly included, are looking for a higher watcher count.

We can't blame ourselves for this, especially if we don't really get a lot of attention in real life. I mean, who doesn't want a little acknowledgement, right? And a high watcher count feels good. It's amazing to see the count going up and thinking, dang, all these people who like my art!
But I've come to learn that a big watcher count isn't everything, and more importantly, a small watcher count doesn't mean you have terrible art.
I'm going to use myself as an example, because I'd rather not slander other artists with these stats, though I know for a fact that it happens to most of us XD I have approximately 3.5k watchers. That's a heck of a lot. And don't get me wrong, I appreciate every one of you guys, that's not what this journal is about - I'm just trying to make a point about something called 'dead watchers' , because I often see people upset about it and thinking it's something they're doing wrong.

I promise you, it's not your fault!

As I say, I have a lot of watchers. But each of my art pieces gets a lot fewer views than I have watchers. That means there are a lot of people not seeing my art. These people are commonly known as dead watchers, or empty watches, or something along these lines, and EVERYONE has them. And the more watchers you have, the more dead watchers you have XD
I'm NOT having a go at these watchers, not at all - I'm most certainly a dead watcher to a few of the people I watch, so I totally understand. But I do see a lot of people, usually with smaller watch counts, thinking they've done something wrong because most of their watchers are ignoring them. PLEASE believe me when I say, it's not your fault! It's nothing you're doing wrong! Your art doesn't suck, your skill hasn't gotten worse, it's not how active or inactive you might be, and your statuses and journals aren't annoying. It's just a reality of dA that people don't have the time or wherewithal to get to everyone they watch. Some of them might not even be active on their accounts anymore, which of course is nothing you can blame yourself for! And who knows - these watchers might not be inactive after all, just watching you from a distance! You never know ;)
I know it can be kind of upsetting, but it just helps highlight the active watchers you do have, and teaches you to run your account for yourself rather than for anyone else. There are dozens of names that I see constantly popping up in my notifications for faving or commenting, and trust me I do notice, and it does give me the warm fuzzies :D You'll have watchers like this too, and if you don't now, you will! And they're the ones that really matter :)

If you lined up 3.5k people, that would be a decent crowd.

This is great! Thanks, Arasteia!

I have had similar feelings about faves!

Measuring the quality of your art by the number of faves or watchers you get is a trap, but it is one that is easy to fall into, especially in western cultures, where we are taught in school and at home that our value and our worth can be measured by the number of friends we have, or the size of our paycheck.

I wrote about my experiences with this on DA, and you might be interested in my journal entry:

Thanks, Arasteia!

Thank you! Glad you liked it ^^
And yes exactly, that's so true, it's really heavily ingrained and hard to get out of.
Your journal is interesting! I definitely think art is a competitive sport, at least on sites like deviantART - though it really shouldn't be.
You're most welcome!

Thanks!

Of course, all the art sites I am on conspire to make you take competitive part by instantly giving you your faves and views and followers for each drawing! When you are like me and even treat yoga as a competitive sport, well..... 😀

But I love thinking that millions of people from around the world are seeing my drawings and that some of them like what they see enough to click on the “fave” button! And some even like it enough to want to know when I post something new!

Addictive Fuzzies, indeed! 😀

I also had that problem and it almost drove me off this site for good, I'm cool with things now though, and a low stuck view for a piece you think was good does hurt. Anyways read this article and it helped a little.

I'm glad you're feeling happier about things now :) And you're right, it hurts, but it's not a true measure of skill :) And that's a really great article, thank you for sharing!

this made me feel a bit more hopeful :') to be honest, being praised and knowing that people feel that im doing well is a really big drive for me and its really easy for me to get discouraged when not many people see my work

I'm really glad it helped! ^^ I took a look at your gallery and I'd suggest adding your work to groups! That way you'll have more exposure and more people will see your art! To join groups, just search up key words here groups.deviantart.com/ and click the Join Our Group up the top, or Contribute Art if there is one (if there's not, there will be after you join!)

I got a link from someone an got here....because I have the same problem right now and I was thinking about leaving DeviantArt. But somehow your words make me feel so happy. To see that even "bigger" artists have these problems too. It gives me a strong feeling on what I do and what I should think. I think it's time to stop myself from thinking about how do I get some activity in my page and in the comments.
So thank you for this journal~ It helped me so much

Agreed, personally I put my photography and edits on here because I am proud of my work. If someone happens to enjoy them also that's a plus but I don't exist to to get likes or watchers. I enjoy what I do and art is subjective - beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so on ....

Wow, I never would have thought about it from that perspective. I always thought the reason way I wasn't receiving as many watches/views or favorites was because my art either sucked or maybe I wasn't appealing to right type of audience. I mean yeah I do have a few people watching me but still.

Thank you, now my brain is in overdrive

i generally watch a lot of people because of their general art style or content. that does not mean that i like everything i see or highly embrace every single art that's being produced. at some artists i fav a lot while i do less for anpther one. i also browse a lot and dont often watch fullscreen when the motive or ropic dowsnz really appeal to me. it's nothing personal. but i simply dont like everything that a person does just because i like the person or the perspective or motivation behind. same with world views and politics and all that. i can like people while disagreeing or disliking thing with or about them.
