Stranded- Glorfindel by Aranict Stranded- Glorfindel by Aranict

Dedicated to :iconkiwidoc: because without her help this would not have been possible !

Thanx to :iconsirielle: for pointing out some... inconvenient plot holes regarding the story.

Another Tolkien insired pic.
This one is about the sailing of the Ships of the Elves to the West, at the end of the Third Age.

Not all of the Elf- Lords chose to Sail towards the Blessed Realm on that day; on the contrary, some of them chose to stay behind and help Men. Among them, it was Glorfindel, the former Lord of the House of the Golden Flower in the City of Gondolin.

----------

A little bit on Glorfindel.

Glorfindel was one of the high captains of Turgon's army, the other being Ecthelion, Lord of the House of the Fountain, with whom he shared a great friendship. He survived the fall of Gondolin, and led the remaining survivors along with Idril and Tuor to the Eagles' Cleft. However, when their company was attacked by a Balrog, he was engaged in a valiant battle that ended with both adversaries falling to their death in the great chasm between the mountains. The eagles recovered his body, and he was buried with honor.
After his death, the Valar decided to sent him back to Middle-Earth in order to help against the forces of the Shadow. He came back stronger, in the form of a Maia, about the same time with the Istari. He eventually came to Imladris, and became one of Elrond's most trusted allies.
He was the main reason the Witch-King of Angmar was defeated, and the one who prophesised that his death would not come by the hand of man. Additionally, he was the Elf who helped Frodo when they were chased by the Nazgul.

----------

Here, therefore, Glorfindel is gazing at the ships of his kinsmen sailing away in the mist, maybe with a bit of remorse, but knowing all too well that his fate is bound to this of Men.

You think so? I'm really, really happy to hear it! Well it took a lot of time, a lot of devotion and a LOT of love for LOTR :) And I think I've become a little bit of a Glorfindel fangirl, lately. Ah, damned Silmarillion.

hm, LOTR. I read all the books a couple of years ago and I'm planning to read them again soon 'cause I don't remember all of it :D but I simply adore Legolas, especially in combination with Gimli :XD: and Aragorn, of course, I don't think I have to even mention him :P

Firstly thanx for the advice. Well, I know what you mean and my original purpose was to have a night scene and the ships burning in the horizon. But, it turned out differently. I still have that idea on my head though and might visit it sometime (soon I hope). And I was between minds about Grey Havens as well. Because it would fit more with the pic... But, well, this is fantasy work and hardly close to the real thing, right? And by artistic lisence, I can forget that there was no sun :p Anyway it still has that "mist- twilight" atmosphere, right?
Mmmm. Well. Maybe I should change the story...

...
Ok you win. You are right after all. ;)
Just help me a bit with the text, alright?

There is no description of his hair, I think. I could be wrong, so better always check resources. For example if it was given chances are Tolkien Gateway gave it in character bio.

I'm not bashing you. IMO when you give exact quotes you need to follow them in the most basic things like lack of Sun, other way it's AU. If you want freedom say it's inspired or your vision, but when it contradicts I would skip quotations.

I know, but I also know that it happens to do ill job when criticizing stuff behind pictures instead of technique or other neutral things.

Hmm, I'm purist and I'm not, I've got my own ideas different from the sources ;) And I am total Men & Hobbits n000b, all my focus is on the Eldar in Aman and Beleriand :whisper:

You know, i think that when you do something, you gotta do it to your best ability.Technically, this is what I can do with my current skills. But if i do fanart , i wanna be loyal to the original material in a way that it is still art inspired from the fandom, but it does not have mistakes. The losgar incident here- i got carried away by the pic and completely forgot the original story behind the pic. So, in a way, it was not loyal and i do not like that. Now whether Glorfindel is honey blond or if Legolas has grey eyes- well, these do not matter so much. But i still wanna get them right. So that none can tell me that i'm doing things wrong.

Ah... well. I used to like Men only. Now, after the silm and UT that i read that summer, well.. Im all about Elves. (i still like men though) :P I mean... everyone's gotta read those books. To be honest, i liked them even more than i did LOTR. The tales of the Eldar are so fascinating. I've got proof: i tried to list my favourite elfs. And I almost came up with an essay, not a list

Hobbits.. Uh.. I dont like. The're mostly comic relief. I mean, they're just cute. Nothing more. 'Cept for Sam of course.

Interesting vision, but one detail doesn't match - there was no Tress, nor Sun yet, thus it's too bright. Maybe adding some overlay/multiply layers could make it darker and less contrasted, but still we would need some torches or Feanorian lamps - something telling us that there were only stars as light and nothing more. No matter that - keep doing good work :)

The first suggestion would be to put some blades and tufts of grass in front of the cloak where it meets the ground. You'd only need one or two tufts to make it even more realistic.
The second suggestion is to do with focus and depth of field. The cliff photo is very crisp and sharp over all the grass from the foreground to the midground. The bottom of the cloak is alos in sharp focus. However the focus on the rest of the figure is much softer. Also the sea is very soft and misty, so the division at the edge of the cliff is very abrupt.Because this manip is so realistic I think it needs a realistic depth of field. Things that are the same distance from the eye of the observer need to be in the same focus. I'd try softening all the grass and the cloak where it meets the ground. Also adding some extra blur to the grass further away from the foreground would make the misty feel flow from the midground (at the level of the figures head and shoulders) out to the sea without any break. What do you think?

i think you are very kind to stop and help me with your suggestions. i'm still a rookie and these things didnt even cross my mind. so you say 1) to add grass to the cloack. you mean to make the cloak amidst tufts of grass, i got it right? 2)now that depth of field thing. I'm gonna try to make it right, but will you help me ? if i send you WIPS will you say when i got it right?

again i dont want to burden you, but i'd really, really need some feedback to improve... thank you!
