Carmen was partway through packing up her gear when it hit her-Tweety's next race was tomorrow, and it was being held on the same grounds that Carmen was currently standing on. The name of the place had been familiar when she'd signed up for the most embarrassing show on Earth, and now she knew why-the filly's last race had been held here, and she'd been kept there to train until this next race. After that she was being shipped of to California, and then possibly overseas for a couple of races before coming back to Florida for the JC Fountain of Youth Stakes. Dennis, her trainer, thought she had the talent to compete against the best, and Zack seemed to be unwavering in his faith in the guy, and until the filly actually started costing her money, she was willing to just go with the flow.
Trying to remember what day it was, she realized the race was the next morning, which was great, as the heat was sweltering this late in the afternoon. Still, she wanted to meet /her/ filly, so after a lot of walking, a lot of questions, and a lot of odd looks later did she find herself standing in front of the filly's stall. Just as Tooey and Perri had, Tweety had a box fan blowing into the stall, and she was standing with her head as close as she could to it with her eyes closed, apparently napping. She ended up talking to the assistant trainer, who said that Dennis was out of town due to a death in the family, but he, the assistant trainer, had very specific instructions on what to do with the filly as it was Dennis who was doing all of the work with Tweety. The little bells in Carmen's head started ringing at that, and she suddenly had a few questions for Zack regarding the filly's trainer...
Carmen did not sleep well that night as she was too amped up. She had a feeling that Tweety was going to do well, and logic was saying the same thing. The track this time was dry and fast, and the filly had a post position to the outside of the small field, so all she had to do was break cleanly and stay near the front. Which is exactly what happened. The problem was, and Carmen had not been around to know, was that the dark red filly in the 3 slot was a nasty piece of work. She'd tried to double barrel Tweety on their way to the gate, and even though the giant filly had been the last to be loaded, she still tried biting both Tweety and the other red-headed filly in the 2 spot before the bell rang and took off like a rocket. Marty, Tweety's jockey, knew that the nasty filly had a talent for kicking out even when at a full gallop, so he kept his mount a little wider than normal-a lot wider than normal, really-so when the came to the final turn Tweety has a solid 3 lanes out from the other filly, who herself was running a ways off the rail. The rest of the field was right behind them, and with running to wide, Marty asked Tweety to go early. And go she did, dropping down even further as she accelerated, passing the big red filly in just 3 strides after they hit the straightaway. What Marty could not see, but Carmen could, was an oddly colored horse flying up on the inside. It had been hanging back, and obviously had more energy to burn than Tweety, who, while she was accelerating quickly, she had less gas in the tank and it was going to be a close call as to who made it over the line first...
