In a last minute decision, the call was made to send Earl to White Blood Race Course for a big-money maiden race. The change was mostly due to Zack being extraordinarily curious about the marathon race with a huge purse for older horses; one of the four year old fillies left to him by his uncle liked the longer distances, and he wanted Sean's opinion on the track, and whether or not he thought the filly would fare well on it for the two-mile race. If he thought it was up to snuff-you never really knew with these rarely-heard-of tracks-he planned on stationing the filly there, especially if the field sizes proved to be smaller. So while Sean was on a scouting mission, it only made sense to bring Earl and a few others with, and run them in some easy races before going back to Florida for the TS Fountain of Youth Stakes. It would also be a test of sorts for the colt, to see how well he would manage the short amount of time between arrival and race. If he didn't stress more than normal, it meant more impromptu trips were in the future. If his anxiety went through the roof, then lots of pre-planning was in order. Either way, once he got back to Florida he would have a few weeks to settle down before his next big race, so this trip hopefully would not have a negative impact.

The day he arrived, Earl was taken out first thing for a short workout. His race was in just two days, but Sean was thinking along the same lines as Dennis-let the colt know this place is no different from any other race track. He would arrive, he would work, he'd go back to his stall. And sooner or later he would race. Asides from spooking violently at a squirrel that kept leaping from branch to branch along the backside, Robyn found that he had settled into his workout well. Back in his stall, things were slightly different, and while he wasn't digging a hole to China or pacing back and forth(constantly at least), he was doing a good job of destroying the stall with his aggressive cribbing. The horse's that had come along were veteran travelers, but unfortunately had no calming effect on the worked-up colt.

The day of the race dawned with the temperatures promising to reach scorching levels. The run-off of water from the snow melting in the nearby mountains had a course right across the grounds, leaving the track wet and muddy, so much so the hot sun had no chance at drying the track. Unlike Tweety, however, Earl did not mind a wet track in the least bit. This was a good thing too, as he liked to stay towards the back of the pack, and would undoubtedly come back looking more like a chestnut than a dark drown.
One thing Robyn was very grateful for was that the track was smaller, and the starting gate was in the homestretch, and not along the backside-even across the infield, she could see that damn squirrel flitting around, and hoped that Earl would stay focused and not notice it as they had to pass...
