Torja was out in the wilds, looking for a Tokota that was said to be wandering. She was a bane on those who wanted to tame her, but there was something Torja admired about the spirit displayed in the stories she had heard. Proud, powerful and from the stories, this Tokota knew it All traits that, in Torja’s opinion, were good qualities to have, especially given that apparently this female was notoriously difficult to get close to.
Atop of Lucius’ back, she had set out at dawn towards the last location this roan girl had been spotted. They were all days old though, some weeks. If she actually was still in the area...well, it’d be a miracle in and of itself.
Both she and Namira had been taking a break from their normal adventures, resting rather and this seemed like as good a passtime as any some healer could recommend. There was no way she’d sit and learn to read, or knit. Torja’s face grimaced in disgust at the thoughts. Waste of time in her mind, especially if there was something like taming a wild Tokota. Hopefully she was just as ferocious as the stories made her out to be…
Night had already fallen by the time rider and Tokota had it to the location that had been described to her. Glancing up to her moonlit surroundings, she nodded. More to herself than to anyone else. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Lucius begin to fidget, stepping erratically as if there was something biting at his legs. He was nervous about being out here and rightfully so. Bears were packing on the last few pounds before their hibernation and there had been no words on herds moving through the area. Gently, Torja ran a hand through the male’s curly mane, humming softly in a bit to try and calm him enough for her to set up camp.
The stars were shining, a fire was roaring and sounds had been heard the entire time. The occasional twig snapping, the snow falling from a tree as if something had brushed against it and all of it had both Lucius and Torja on edge. The wolverine Tokota was protective, yes, but he was still young and couldn’t exactly be trusted with her defense if it did end up being a bear or something else. Maybe those poachers…
“Hmph.” She grunted, poking the embers with a stick that lay smoldering in the pit underneath fresher branches.
The curly male was right up against Torja’s side throughout the night, whining from time to time that was only cut off by a low growl every now and again. It was clear he knew the same thing she did; they were being watched, circled even, but it was dark, pitch black except the light of a slim moon and the illumination the roaring fire granted them both.
“Shh, it’s okay.” Whatever it was didn’t seem to be dangerous, just curious. There had been no sounds of aggression except for the ones that Lucius made every few minutes or so, but at the same time, there had been no real attempt by whatever was circling them to approach. This, combined with the location, led Torja to believe that they had found their mark.
Rising to her feet, Torja moved away from her Tokota, who looked at her with a worried glance as she moved further away from the light of the fire. Kneeling down in the snow, she rummaged through the bags still attached to Lucius’ tack with laid atop of tree branches while leaning against the trunk of the same tree the branches had come from.
Treats and meats, two things that Torja had learned over time were good for trying to tame a Tokota.
Taking those two things from the bags, she made her way back to the small fire that had begun to die down and an impatient Lucius, waiting for his rider to return. Torja slid ungracefully back onto the ground, atop of a pelt she had laid out for rider and Tokota to rest on instead of the freezing snow. With equally as much grace, she laid the meats and treats meant for this wild on the skin, batting away Lucius’ nosy nose as she leaned over her leg to try and sneak one off.
“Not for you.” Torja scolded.
The smell of meat soon filled the air as they sat just above where the fire could just barely lick at the red muscle, skewered on a stick, cleaned of leaves and branches, and held in Torja hand. Turning it, it she hoped it would attract the brown female she was even in the wilds looking for to begin with. On the downside, it would be very easy for the smell of cooked meat that was wafting through the air to attract a hungry bear, looking for an easy meal. But Lucius didn’t seem to mind more than usual as he stared at the dripping meat, pining for just a taste of it.
“Still not for you.” Torja commented as she handed the male wolverine Tokota one of the surplus treats she had brought. They were simple, just grain treats with bits of meat in it and baked with beef broth instead of plain water. What mattered right now was that they were good and Lucius scarfing down his was proof of that.
The meat was done and now... now to see if she could win over this wild Tokota with a full belly.
Setting up the treats, one after another in a line, leading up to the meat that was set only twenty feet from where Torja sat herself down. Lucius followed behind, staying close to his rider. Was he worried? Definitely. The sounds of having something circling them was nerve-wrecking for the Tokota.
“It’s okay.” The nord hummed, running her fingers through the curly mane of the male that was nestled so close up to her.
It didn’t take long for results to surface. The amber eyes were the first thing that Torja saw, but Lucius had been the first to spot them, his tail raised and ears went forward. A little bit of his teeth showed but just as the growls started, they stopped thanks to Torja’s hand rubbing the back of his head.
Next was the brown body. She stepped forward, eating treat after treat, but only after thoroughly investigating each and every one to ensure they were some kind of trap. Every few ones she’d raise her head and look to the two that looked right back at her. By the time she was at the pile of meat, her pace had slowed on eating each of the ten treats that Torja had laid out for her.
The pile of thin sliced meat was devoured with all of the grace that Torja had expected from the stories she had heard of this wild female. She walked with such refinement that it was a wonder she was wild and not a prize show Tokota. But as she approached, Lucius grew more nervous and soon even Torja’s stroking could not soothe him. His growls grew louder and it was only a matter of time before the wild brown female began repaying his aggression in kind.
She turned tail and strutted away, back into the darkness of the forest and out of sight.
Torja sighed.
The meat was half-eaten and now the wild Tokota was gone. Lucius was to blame for that, but at the same time, she couldn’t fault him. The brown female had gotten fairly close and she was new, unfamiliar. Almost immediately the curly regretted it, his ears went back and his tail curled up beside him.
“Don’t worry, that was just the first try. Let’s get some sleep and try again tomorrow.” Torja ruffled the piebald wolverine’s head as she stood and made her way back to their little camp and began settling in for the rest of the night. Dawn would be on them soon and then they’d need to hunt. Having packed light to keep the weight low on Lucius, that little bit of meat was all the extra she had brought for the wild Tokota.
The Tokota nodded.
Tomorrow would be another day and hopefully after a successful hunt, she have plenty of meat in order to help win this wild roan over. Food was always the best way, at least in Torja’s opinion. Hopefully Eloise would agree with her and eventually, just maybe, she’d be willing to come back with her.
