Fractal Debate in #HQ

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 12, 2011, 1:33 AM
Rumblings Around Town

Hello fractalists!

There is a healthy debate taking place over at hq right now, and I encourage you all to comment and get involved :D Of course fractal art is art! Get in there and prove it!…

Here's some of the questions that techgnotic is asking:
How do you respond to critics who claim that fractal art is too much of the “machine” creating the artwork?

What is the extent of the artist’s human agency that makes a fractal artwork the artists vision rather than just an extension of “the machine”?

Is a background in mathematics or programming something that can greatly aid a fractal artist?…

Happy Fractaling

From Wiki"
Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, whereas disciplines such as anthropology, sociology and psychology analyze its relationship with humans and generations."
As fractals truly affect most peoples intellect and emotion I would state that is IS art. It is all ine the eye of the beholder.

Would the naysayers also say photography is not art? Silly debate.

I refuse to lower myself to this debate. Other types of art don't have to 'prove' that they're art, so why should fractal art do so? to argue with them just makes them seem like they have a valid point.

I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment: This is what I posted:

Art, is like God. It is a term that everyone has their own interpretation for. Debating it merely generates conflict.

Do you want to know whether or not something is 'art' so you can sell it to some prick who will stick in a vault?

If that's the case, then its probably where the 'art' belongs!!

Sorry, for clarity I agree with CherubiumAngles's comment that the debate should not be occurring.

Well i think that... Fractal is the ultimate art, generated mostly with a computer not an artist.

I do fractals using apo, i don't find myself as an artist, but every time I get amazed with the results I've done.

Conclusion: if you can make fractals far away from a computer, you are an ultimate artist.

I've already replied to another debate on the same theme. Is there a way to coordinate them all together? Sorry I can't remember which fractal site it was.

The short answer: "Fractal" is a medium. "Art" is what the person does with the medium. "Fractal Art" is a category/subset of the visual arts.
Artists used to grind their own pigments and mix them with carriers and fixatives before painting with them. We buy our paints off the shelf. While the former has a more intimate relationship with their work it is not essential for us in this day and age to know in order to paint. A technical background just takes a little of the mystery out of the equation. Fractals as a medium probably have greater initial appeal to artists with that have that background/mindset.
The "machine" lays down the "underpainting" and the artist is free to do with the outline whatever they please. The more they infuse their vision into the image the closer it comes to being handcrafted. The computer is a tool to be employed it isn't the artist (yet).

we have the luck that you need to be familiariced with internet to be in deviant art (obvious) and that minds certain approach to technology, so most people in this community will agree about fractal being an art, the problem raises with traditionalist artists who doesnīt like any digitally created and of course will tend to deny the computer as an "art tool", "anything digital is too easy, real art is drawn with your hand in real paper blah blah blah"

so now with fractal those people, generally ignorants, donīt know how fractals work and say its not art, and yes, those people exist and i have met them

PS: NOT every traditionalist artist, just some group who reject technology as a valid medium to create art

Pointless debate, lol, of course fractal art is art!

I Already replied to that on August 11th at 5:23.59 PM here: ( [link] ) where I said:

LOL, these kind of questions ("Is fractal art TRULY art?"") always make me laugh... it's not like the computer woke up one morning all on it's own and generated fractal variations until it was content that it's production was "art!" Hahaha!

Is a rainbow TRULY a rainbow?

The fact is it depends on the where and when of the observer... to most it is not visible as a beautiful creation unless they are in the perfect position and time to view it as such... which in turn begs another question...

Since the beauty created by it's creator is only visible by an observer in a specific place and time...

Is there an "ART" to that intended communication itself?

I submit that of course there is, and all fractal beauty is "ART" accordingly!

I tend not to enjoy these debates so much as it has the possibility to turn into a nasty biased argument.
