OK, just did my own test.  I got the proper caustics each time, with emitter, world emitter, and area + portal.  I only resolved to 750 samples, but the emitter was the cleanest.  The portal was the fastest, and was _way_ faster than the emitter.  I think I could have changed some settings to make things work better in general.
