~A tribute to Ann Wood~

Ever since I saw the first Ann Wood owl (It was the handsome Chillingworth) I was totally in love with them. I've always had a thing for owls, but never found a stuffed one which really appealed to me, and when I saw Chillingworth, I would have cuddled and taken him home right away if I had had the possibility. I'm following the talented Ann's blog now for quite some time, and I am astonished by every piece of artwork she produces, be they cake toppers, ships, or owls. They look so beautifully ragged, yet so full of life, and they are very expressive in and of themselves. Ann gives her owls names and short descriptions, often in the form of some quote, which still furthers the impression of looking into the face of something very much alive – the face of a person, rather than a sculpture made from cloth. I am captured by their looks, and their usually evil or malicious attire, despite which they are really fascinating and beautiful in a strange, unnerving way.
This being as it is, I wanted to make an owl much in the manner of Ann's for quite some time. I made the pattern and everything myself, as usual. Since I do not have any way to come to antique garments, out of which Ann usually makes her soft sculptures, I took vintage button-downs and pants from the 70's and 80's as a substitute. I gave it the name Trauma. It means the very same thing in English as in German, yet there is the German word “Traum”, meaning “dream”. Obviously, it's not supposed to be a mere clone of Ann's owls, but it is definitely inspired by the beautiful ones.
Doesn't have legs as of yet, as I haven't quite figured out how to attach the wire, but they will come eventually.
