I get a lot of inquiries about commissions and i can't answer them all, so i hope this post will provide some helpful information to potential clients.
I rarely take commissions because my schedule doesn't allow me to add a lot of extra work, but i'm still interested in new opportunities.
The main issue is that most of the emails i get don't include a budget and ask for my rates instead. I can offer an estimate for illustrations similar in style and complexity to the game cards i'm doing at the moment, but i'm not sure what to charge for different types of work, such as concept art, simple portraits, etc.. Then, even if the client and i would agree upon a price, i might still not have time for a new commission.
Time limits are another thing to consider. Most often i get booked out a couple of weeks ahead, so if you need the work done within a week or two, chances that i'd be able to do that are significantly lower.

In conclusion, it would be greatly appreciated if work-related emails included a budget and an approximate deadline, as it would allow me to decide much faster whether i can accept a commission or not.

Thank you!

Not forgotten

ID 09 by drefeyja
I first met drefeyja about seven years ago on this site, so here is probably the best place to say this. We never had the chance to see each other in real life, but she was my friend as much as any of the ones i met in person.
I remember complaining that i couldn't afford a tablet, then i managed to get one sooner than i thought; she told me afterwards that she had already talked to a few other dA users about raising money to buy me one for Christmas. That's just one small example, but everyone who knew her can tell she was one of those rare people who are truly compassionate and sincere in both actions and words, not merely an idealist, but one who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and get involved. Her volunteering work is yet another proof of that.
As it often happens, we slowly drifted away over the years, but started to talk again a few months before she went away. I wish i could have made better use of the little time left, but i didn't really believe this would happen.
Today it would have been her birthday, she would have turned 29. I saw the notification and, for a moment, thought that none of it was true, but then reality sank in.
I'm sorry i couldn't write something better now. Happy birthday, Dragon Keeper! Wherever you are, know you are not forgotten.

For those of you who are following my Facebook page and haven't seen this in the feed, here's a copy/paste of my latest post:

From now on i will also upload paintings in parallel on my personal account, so if you are interested in receiving updates, please hit the "Follow" button:
 Here's why:
"Facebook is free and always will be", says the signup page. Until it's not anymore. This isn't one of those chain mail scares, Forbes, AdAge and other reputable sources have announced it:
As page owners might already know, Facebook decided to reduce pages posts reach down to 1-2%, forcing admins to pay money so their posts will be visible to people who already liked their page, even those who added it to their interests list. In the long run, the reach is expected to drop to zero, so nothing will show up on followers' feed without being paid for.
This means that pages owned by small businesses, musicians, visual artists, authors, artisans, health and fitness instructors etc. - basically everyone who creates interesting content - will have to compete with multinational corporations and brands and allocate the same budget for posts visibility, which is obviously not possible. So most of them will quit and move on to other platforms, and Facebook users will be left to drown in a sea of ads, spam and irrelevant content.

The other account's main advantage is directing views towards this one, so i thought i can return the favor..even though it's technically a favor to myself, but let's not get into tricky speculations. (That's such a cold statement from a person who is using a kitty as an avatar.)

Intuos tablets

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 22, 2012, 3:02 PM

Do you has one? :iconcheezburgerplz:
Until now i've been using a Bamboo and it does the job well enough, but there are some things that could be improved. Most of the time i can't get smooth tapered brush strokes even if i lightly decrease the pressure, linework is extremely difficult and sometimes the tablet just isn't reacting as i was expecting it to do, shortly working with it doesn't feel natural and precise enough.
So i was thinking to get an Intuos, but not before asking for advice. I can't tell much from reviews, they're mostly about specifications and stuff like that. What i want to know is if it really does *feel* different: Is the painting process 'smoother' compared to a bamboo, would it improve the precision of the linework, would the brushstrokes be more expressive, etc. or should i just keep my money?

Couple of weeks ago i got a camera and made another account where to post photos for which i don't have immediate use in painting or design-related matters. I also have a tumblr for this, but it's not much more different. I planned to don't mention it here and keep it separate for now, because i certainly don't fancy myself a photographer when i didn't even finish reading the camera's manual =P and i'm pretty sure i won't be using it as more than a means to an end.
But when i logged in this evening i found that i got a DD for this Pumpkins and leaves by marjarah (for which i'm grateful, but i'd rather attribute it to a favorable conjuncture than the picture's merits), so i might as well post it here, as everybody who has seen it knows about this account now :)

By the way, if you know me irl or you're one of the people i used to talk to (via notes, mail, yahoo, or others; heck, i guess lengthy deviantart comments qualify as well for a few persons) and you want to add my private account, send me a note ;) There's nothing special there, but i tend to actually answer messages more often than 6 months.

O hai look at my blog

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 1, 2011, 12:00 PM

Because i always carry around some form of phone camera since a couple of years, i started taking a lot of photos of stuff to use them as reference, as material for collages and manipulations, for their compositional structure, color scheme, texture etc. But i never got to use some of these photos and i take new ones quicker than i can use even a small percent of the old ones.
So i thought to start a blog where to post some of those photos, plus some related ideas, tutorials, tips, etc. and, if i figure where to get free hosting, some downloadable stuff such as stock pictures. This is by no means a portfolio or 'professional' blog, just a place for various photo odds and ends.
I don't think i'll post drawings on this blog, at least not unless they will be somehow related to the subject. Perhaps i'll make a similar blog for drawings, but for now i don't think i'll have time to update it on a constant basis, since drawing obviously needs more time than snapping photos and at the moment most of my time is taken by disappointingly prosaic activities such as writing chromatology essays.
Oh, i don't actually promise i'll update this one very often either (but i will try, i need that kind of commitment exercise :P) and i expect i'll post weird stuff there. However, if anybody is interested, here it is:

I've been receiving a number of notes regarding commissions lately. I apologize for not answering all of them, but some seem to be quite old, so i guess it would be too late to do that now. Anyway, i just wanted to say that at the moment i'm busy with school stuff and i probably won't have time to do commissions until the summer vacation, more precisely in july. Well, see you all soon.

Drivers? This is Windooooows!

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 13, 2009, 10:20 AM

Having trouble with the display, i thought it would also be wise, among other empiric middle-age peasant solutions, to reinstall the driver for the graphics card. It was not wise. After restarting the computer the resolution was an unchangeable blurred 800x600 with 4 bit color (again, no other options). Roll back driver? would be nice, but who the hell made a back-up for it.. I remembered i had a PC Linux OS live CD, so i used it to get on the nVidia site and download a new driver. I saved it on an USB stick, rebooted into windows and tried to install it. "this is not a valid win.32 application". Note that i took the .exe file, and not the driver for Linux, as one could think i've done by mistake. How about trying to install again the driver i already had? Sure. This crashed windows for good. Safe mode took me into an infinite loop of errors.
The only thing left to do was to install that linux. That didn't work as well as i thought..i deleted a partition to use for the linux partitions, but for some reason after the install, it still exists. I don't know from where it took that space for the install, and i think i don't want to know. At least the important files seem to be alright.
See you the near future..
