This is part of my semester-long series on the theme of Monstrosity. It was an assignment that we had to pick an overall theme to work on for the entire semester for various printmaking techniques, so I picked something in the same vein as my typical themes of "dreams" and "mythology" but with a darker turn.
This particular image is the fourth assignment for the course, a woodcut with "A Distraction" as the prompt to integrate with my particular theme. This one was another prompt I had to think about for a while before arriving to something for a composition. I had originally planned to illustrate a small human-like figure behind a larger human-like figure, the larger one being startled by the smaller one's shadow.
Then I took a different direction. Cell phones are pretty distracting for people so I decided to depict the aftermath of a distraction. The owner of this particular cell phone was so distracted, some type of monstrosity snuck up on them unnoticed. I made the image gorey with the addition of blood splatter. Many students in my class shuddered at this particular concept.
Fun factoid: The cell phone depicted here is based off of my own cell phone.
