"Yes... You better." Now spoke the other guy, with the bodyguards. He spoke like a sophisticated, upper class man, carefully pronouncing each syllable so they would come out as he intended them to: uncaring and cold. His accent was a hybrid of English and German.
And with that, he disappeared. No, he didn't walk out, he just... Faded away. So did the guards.
I rushed out and threw myself on the floor next to him. "D-Dad, w-what just happened?!"
His voice came out raspy, as if he were having difficulty breathing. "Y-you saw that..?" He murmured something inaudible, and then continued: "That guy... I work for him. I have been for a really long time... Basically, he wants me to make something... Someone?... For him..."
"Y-You don't have to make something for him... Don't you have a few dozens of premade... Things... Down in the basement, the one below the lab?"
"No no, those ones, they're... special. They stay in the basement."
"Well... There's me."
"Give me to him."
"You're... weak... And disobedient. And talkative. He needs someone strong, and quiet. Like his bodyguards. Except... Not as ridiculous-looking."
It sounded like he was lying, but I had to let him go. He had an important assignment due tomorrow, and he seemed tired. It would be stupid to tire him even more.
So I backed away, back to the dark and gloomy hallway, where Blank was.
"Hey, great job distracting him! I managed to nick a victim!"
"Remember those big, creepy machines in my room? I'm gonna show you what they do!"
Before I could object, Blank had dragged me into the room and sat me down in a chair. I had no choice but to watch the demonstration.
