🎤 "Laulu” meaning song 🎤

🎤 Background 🎤

Long ago, a group of Annies fell upon undeveloped, but promising land that would one day become a booming city.
With its rich, fertile soils and the ideal trading site it made by being on the coast, the land appeared to be perfect.
The flourishing agriculture and trade caused the town to populate and learn of other cultures.
Beings from all over the world moved into Laoluzia, introducing new topics to its residents.
The most popular was music and dance, which changed the town completely.
Over the years, the concept of “idols” developed more and more in Laoluzia,
and now the city is a hub for idol activity, music, and performing arts.

🎤 Temp & Climate 🎤

A desert city. The temperature goes from quite hot in the summer, up to 41℃ (105°F), to quite cold in the winter, especially at night time, as low as -18℃ (0.4°F).

The average temperature year-round is about 30℃ (86°F).

Rainfall comes in short, concentrated bursts during the rainy season, which is between winter and spring. The city is built around the river’s delta, making the city greener in the center and more of a sandy desert as it spreads outwards. The sandy areas contribute to the occasional sandstorms, though it is not something that the residents are unable to deal with.

🎤 Flora & Fauna 🎤

There are various flora and fauna in the city besides the crops grown. The river is home to creatures like frogs, turtles, bin chicken, shoebills, crocodiles, hippos, tortoises, mongooses, multiple types of fish, monitors, rhinos, etc.

Animals further from the desert include wild cats, fennec foxes, fruit bats, antelope, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, lions, snakes, and birds of prey.

Plant life includes light emitting plants, cacti, dates, palm trees, lotus, papyrus, and Joshua trees. Crops such as wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, and pomegranates are grown along the river.

Laoluzia is also the only place where a special type of coral made entirely out of quartz is found. Various magical beasts, that are less dangerous than those that live in the equator, live near the river as well.

🎤 Location 🎤

The city is located on the southeast of the continent.
It is not too close to the equator and is right by the ocean.

🎤 Special Occasions 🎤

There are many kinds of festivals held every year in Laoluzia.
There is a harvest festival, various music and dance festivals, and two huge idol competition events.
There are also plenty of other small events with performances from popular idols!

Rain Dance Festival:

Since the time before the meteor, it has been a tradition for farmers to gather in their fields at the start of the rainy season and perform the ‘Rain Dance’ using their own magic to bless the land and bring forth the rain and much-needed floodwaters. This dance used to have an ancient song to go with it. Combined was an old magic that really did bring forth rain. Unfortunately, all that remains of the song is the melody and a few disjointed verses. Despite the dance requiring huge amounts of the casters’ magic, some farmers still believe that not performing the dance will doom the land to a period of drought.

Harvest Festival:

Also known as Harvest week and takes place on a week where there is a full moon. The farmers and volunteers work tirelessly throughout the week gathering the crops, processing them and finally putting them in storage. The last crops to be picked are the ones that will be used at the end of harvest feast. A meal prepared by the people of Laoluzia for the farmers.

Debut Rose Competition:

A competition for new aspiring idols which lasts for three months with two separate categories, (male and female). Individuals perform in front of a panel of 5 judges/mentors who will be the ones who judge the audition rounds to make sure they are of an acceptable skill level. The competitors are then placed into groups at random and are given challenges to complete, (lyric and music writing, choreography, etc.) the groups are changed each challenge. The audience is the one that votes to determine the winning group of each challenge and also individual scores.

Riverboat Race:

Twice a year, a boat race is set up on the Anahr (meaning river) River. On that day the river is mostly cleared of trade ships and merchant boats to allow the racers a clear path. The boats used in the race are typically made by their racer, but there are some that commission theirs to be built by a more skilled boat maker. Prizes usually include a free engagement with a high-class restaurant and tickets to concerts.

Rising Star Competition:

A competition for existing idol groups new and old. Each round of a competition has a theme the groups must follow with the winner being decided by audience voting. The winner is decided by which group manages to obtain the most amount of overall votes from all categories. The main purpose of this event is to give new and fading groups a chance of exposure.  There are two categories; male groups and girl groups.

Encores Gala:

An end of year awards ceremony and performance where the most popular songs of the year are sung. Performers that have been asked to perform sometimes use this as an opportunity to give a preview of their next song. This non-competitive performance is held at the Dawn stadium.

🎤 Architecture & Buildings of Interest 🎤

The houses are made of brick and stone and are built with tall ceilings that allows for better ventilation in hotter months.
The wealthy have fancier with decorative carvings and marble pillars and finishing.
Wood is scarce in the area, but the residents obtain it through trade.
Most buildings have painted or tiled murals on the exterior, typically of the residences blessing.
Cloth is hung above the streets to provide shade in the heat.
Most homes, especially those close to the river and sea have raised doorways to prevent any possible flooding in the rainy season.

House of the Senate:

The tallest building in the city, but not the largest. It was designed to be the tallest so that it could be seen from mostly anywhere in the city, this was achieved by building a monstrously tall minaret on top of the building. It is the gathering place of the 12 council members when they must make a decision that will majorly affect the city or a section of the city.
School of Performing Arts:

The most prestigious school of the performing arts. Due to it teaching both singing and dancing it’s the place to go if one wishes to train to become an idol. Anyone over the age of 13 may apply to the school which runs more like a university than a school. Aside from teaching vocal control and dancing, the school also teaches magic basics and encourages using magic in creative ways in performances.
Port market:

The largest port trade/market in Aster. There is a great battle between sellers and traders for space leading to some minor turf wars. Any fighting that breaks out is quickly dealt with by the port wardens. To get around this issue of space some have taken to simply setting up shop on their boats.

Inner markets:

The marketplaces within the city which take up a large chunk of the city. There is never a dull moment in the market streets except late at night when they close until next day and at noon, the hottest part of the day, where most sensible folks hide away from the sun. Like the port market, there are many performers filling the air with music.

Nendev (meaning 'between them’) shrine:

An underground chamber next to the oasis, one of the underground veins of water flows to the side of the room. If one were to jump in they would be carried to the oasis itself, however such an action is forbidden. The walls of the cavern are filled with many ancient drawings of obscure events some claim that they are the remnants of a long-forgotten era. Unknown to many but there is also a secret passage leading to a disorienting labyrinth, few have ventured in with those going further than it is wise to be never seen again.

Dusk Concert hall:

The largest indoor stage. To prevent the audience and performers from overheating, crystals from the northern regions that absorbs heat and emits a cool aura act like an air conditioning unit and are placed in strategic locations around the hall.

Nahri (meaning 'nine') River:
A large fresh water river that is also the lifeblood of Laoluzia. The point where Laoluzia is situated on the river runs parallel to the sea and connects to the sea further south which is the reason the section of the river the city is located isn’t brackish or salty. The river has to main sources, one from a spring in the quartz mountains and the other being from an oasis lake. During the rainy season, the rains would send a flood of water into the rivers and leave behind a thick rich silt which is used to grow the much-needed crops. Dye pigments can also be lifted from the silt to create an array of dyes such as purple, blue and red.

Dormitory:
For the idols and those studying at the school. Many shenanigans happen here with the guards usually being the receiving end of most pranks even if they are not the intended target.

Choral Music School:
A school for all types of music. For singers they are required to learn to play at least two instruments before graduation. The school often collaborates with dance schools, mainly the Gamsa School, for performances.

Nendev (meaning ‘between them’) oasis:

West of Laoluzia and the second major source of the Nahri River. The oasis is surrounded by Date trees, Halapipatoes and other palm tree variants. A small, shrine is located at the oasis and doubles up as a base to monitor the oasis’s water.

Gamsa (meaning ‘grace’) Dance school:

A large dance school founded before the fall of the meteors. There are numerous classes teaching different dance styles. This diversity brings many people to the school resulting in most classes being full. People watch for their enrolment openings like a hawk with most places filling up within 2 days. Those that have a connection to one of the staff are often able to privately reserve a spot.

Dawn stadium:

The most popular open stadium which spotlights the greatest performers of Laoluzia, it can seat 200,000 people. The open ceiling of the stadium is lined with crystals that provide a barrier which blocks most UV rays from entering the stadium and thus reducing the amount of sunburn victims. If by chance it happens to rain the barrier will act like glass umbrella.

Anahr (meaning 'river') River:

One of the numerous smaller branching rivers from the Nahri River. This river runs through the city of Laoluzia. Like the main body, it also has quartz coral growing in it. It is also the river the people of Laoluzia use to host their river races.

Manwari (meaning ‘I hope it
comes true’) Mountain:

A large mountain far to the north of Laoluzia. It’s known for its large deposits of quartz. Grains of the crystal are carried down from the natural spring into the Nahri River where it then becomes part of the sand of Laoluzia. The spring at the mountain has a large green crystal that rests at the bottom of the springs bed. The crystal emanates a healing aura giving the water in the mountain spring slight healing capabilities. However, this only applies to water directly located at the mountain itself. Before the meteor, a band of humans tried to steal the crystal but where quickly apprehended and the crystal returned to its original bed. Since that time the mountain has been declared off limits to the
public.

🎤 Government & Laws 🎤

Due to the huge population of Laoluzia (~310k), the government will be a republic form rather than a democratic.
The city is divided into 6 sections; the port, farmland, market area, performers block and suburbs.
and each section has 2 representatives elected by the people living in that section every 8 years.

This group of highly regarded citizens would form a council.
Their jobs include; reading and reviewing feedback from residents, debate on proposals,
pass/abolish laws, be the judges for serious cases, and more.
Lower ranks of the government would deal with smaller cases and
filter out the ones that need to be reviewed by the council members.

The city gives off an easygoing and relaxed vibe. It has good relations with most other towns and cities.
They are accepting of humans but are unofficially stricter with humans than with Annies.
When a human does break a law or does something to ruin the nature of Laoluzia,
they are immediately and kicked out of the city without trial.

🎤 Trade & Specialties 🎤

Trade is huge in Laoluzia.
It is one of the most important parts of the city and is what made this place into such a popular location in the first place.
Having a port as well as having a large river cutting right through makes it an ideal trading site.

Some of its main exports consists of wheat, corn flax, papyrus and its popular native fruit the Halapipatoe.
Aside from the agricultural produce it also exports silica sand for glassmaking, mainly to Songbell.
Laoluzia is also popular for the performing arts. It is widely known as THE city for music, dance, and idols.
Performers and aspiring idols often move there in hopes of making their dream come true.
They are also known for performances and festivities held every night at the inner markets.

🎤 Population 🎤

Approximately 310,000 citizens, a mix of both humans and Annies.
