5 Things That Will Make You a Better Writer

1. Work on something else. I know, I know. You've been working on that story of yours for twelve whole years, and it's your baby. Sure, it may have been inspired by that Dungeons and Dragons session you had when you were thirteen, but you're going to make your fortune with it! It's the next Harry Potter! When my pals and I have gone to writing conferences, we've made note of an interesting phenomenon: when someone has written a first novel in the fantasy genre, it is invariably a sword-and-sorcery novel or a portal fantasy. I will bet money on it: show me a first novel and I will show you a sword-and-sorcery or portal fantasy. There's nothing wrong with sword-and-sorcery as a genre, don't get me wrong. It's just that in writing

I looked on as Nigeria lost its uniqueness. It was no longer the crazy, lawless country of my youth. Somehow it had evolved into a world power, rubbing shoulders with the U.S.A and other formidable countries.
I sighed as I trekked to the bus stop. That I could walk through the once-dangerous street that was Ohafia testified to Nigeria’s stability. Looking around, I tried to replace the modern shops and apartment blocks with the shacks and dilapidated houses I had known, but my memory failed. Arriving at my destination I only had to wait for a minute before a BRT bus appeared. I gave the conductor my ticket and he stepped aside to let me enter. There were only a few people on the bus, all of whom wore corporate clothes. Gone were the fat market women with their smelly tomatoes and the school children.
Buses used to be one of my favourite things about Lagos. You could board a danfo with twelve or thirteen strangers, and very soon you would all be laughing and arguing, as if you had known them your entire life.  Lagos was just a mega-city now, no culture to distinguish it from the steel jungles the world called cities.
Some of us wondered if we could somehow go back in time and stop the development. Others who were quite content with it thought us insane. Maybe we were, but I didn’t see how anyone could be satisfied with the loss of their culture. The same people who travelled to see ancient relics and ruins readily ignored their own fading culture. A loud voice broke into my thoughts, announcing Lekki. Shaking my head, I got up and stepped out of the bus. Maybe I needed to stop reminiscing and face the reality that was now Nigeria.
