My Bio

Formerly known as Annamare! Was able to change my user name because of a very kind and generous gift from Feral3Edge(Sykota). My other account on DA is alystraea. That has become the account on which I would post Tolkien-inspired sketches, practice pieces, fanfic art, and the occasional comic. My art on this account is not very different - maybe a bit more detailed and finished, some larger pieces, but also mostly inspired by Tolkien's Silmarillion.

Teaching myself to draw since mid-2015, and still with lots to learn. I learn mainly by looking at the work of artists I love and slowly picking up how to use light/shadow and color. My style is still developing and I appreciate feedback and any tips on techniques that could help me improve - but keep in mind that I use a very basic program with no fancy cloning, selection or transformation tools.

I've used MyPaint 1.0 ever since it was recommended to me by Irsanna in 2015. It has the brushes I love best. I've tried other software, but I've always come crawling back to this one.

I started out with a Wacom Intuos tablet and now use a Huion H640P, which I recommend as decent - cheap and good, though the connecting cable is temperamental.

So I’ve been painting for three years now, and I’m happy with how far I’ve come. Still need to work on anatomy, composition, colours and shading technique (and probably other areas I haven't discovered yet), and also to be less impatient and lazy and finish my pieces better. But given the fact that we have a huge mortgage and our car's COE is expiring this year, I’m feeling virtuous that I got where I am without spending money on lessons – it’s become a challenge/game to see how far I can develop for free. Art on the cheap, haha! Heartfelt thanks to all of you - you don't know how much you encourage me and make my day with your comments. Y...

After one year!

0 min read
I've been producing digital art (any kind of art, actually!) for almost 13 months now. Woohoo! I'm so grateful for the encouragement and feedback of everyone who bothered to leave me comments here on dA. That has helped me immensely and enabled me to progress. I actually feel the most recent piece on Maglor didn't turn out too bad! It was an anniversary piece, because I still have memories of sitting at the dining table last year with my laptop, painting Maglor with a regular mouse and cursing and swearing at Photoshop CC which I was trying (rather unsuccessfully) to figure out on my lonesome. One of my regrets is that I deleted my two ear...

Soooo.... I've been drawing since mid-May, not counting kiddie scribbles and compulsory art lessons in lower secondary school (three hours doing a painting of a potato with poster colors. Ugh!) I need:  1) work on anatomy 2) work on how to do shadows. Still a coward with shading! 3) work on basic drawing skills. I don't have time to doodle, so the only drawing I do is when I sit down with a concept already in my head... and the only way I can draw is on paper with pencil and copious use of the eraser. I tried with Sketchbook, ArtRage and PS, and gave up in despair! 4) learn how to paint skin... and draw cloth... and animals... and MEN!!!.....

Ahhh I found you! The person who draws these pictures! Your art is soo good and I was hoping to find you, you have a unique way of painting! Keep going!

Aw thank you for the encouragement!

Of course! I am happy to find somebody else who looks at other artists for 'how-to' references. I am teaching myself to do that, too. I am also so glad you provide your tools, I want to do digital too at some point. All the cool Silm artists do digital lol

Digital art is far more budget-friendly than traditional media - and also more forgiving because of the Erase and Undo functions. All the best with it!
