Story (615 words)
The flashy white colt had not had a slow turnaround. Less than two months after his disappointing finish in the Breeder's Cup, he was hitting the track at Gulfstream, his workouts promising. He seemed to like Gulfstream and wasn't too tired. The race he was set to run in was a sprint. 6 furlongs. It wasn't his ideal distance. As a front runner with a short stride, Skye was perfect set up for the sprints. He had never raced in one before, but Aaron was confident that the young colt could handle it. The Road to the Derby would be beginning soon, and Skye needed to be in top form if he wanted any chance at making a run. He was also running without blinkers for the first time – he had been working well enough that he hadn't been getting distracted. His latest run in the Breeder's Cup had been enough for Aaron to try something different. It seemed as though the Mucho Macho Man Stakes were going to be a series of firsts for the young colt.
However, it was also a first for someone else affiliated with Morning Star Ranch. Unlike some of the other races, Ashryn had finally decided to leave the horses in Kelowna to come and watch Skye. The new two year-olds and yearlings were settling in, training underway for the former at the now-defunct Kin Park in Vernon. The choices for training were few and far between, with the only other one being in Osoyoos at another permanently-closed track. The only other option was 4 hours away in Vancouver at Hastings racecourse, where the two year-olds would most likely get their first cracks at the racing scene. Skye had been all over the place, and even for being a Canadian-bred horse, he had never raced in Canada. One day, later on, they'd get him to a race out at Hastings to keep his conditioning up. It was just a matter of waiting for the next season to start. No racetrack around them was ready yet – even the ones that were being prepared for training were not in the best shape yet. The redhead walked over to Aaron, keeping an eye on the white streak that approached the stretch corner.
"He looks like he's working well," Ashryn said, leaning on the rail next to her significant other.
"He recovered well," Aaron said. "I just hope he can handle this distance."
"I'm sure it's nothing to get worried about," Ashryn said with a smile. "He's full of surprises, that little horse."
"Reminds me of someone else I know," Aaron said, raising his eyebrow.
"Watch your damn horse," Ashryn said, stepping back from the rail, though she was clearly joking. "I didn't spent 8 hours commuting by plane just to listen to you flirt."
"Can't help but think that Jillian might need some help with the new ones," he said. "I doubt she can keep up with this workload."
"You leave that to me and Chelsea," Ashryn said. "I need you to focus on a possible Derby contender."
"Easier said than done," Aaron said, gripping the rail and pushing himself away from it before readjusting his ball cap. "I don't know how he's going to hold up. The schedule isn't exactly nice."
"I have faith that you'll figure something out," Ashryn said, watching as the colt breezed by. "Just remember – he's a front runner. That style scares the shit out of me, yet he runs the mile. I doubt that a compressed schedule is going to be a huge deal for him as long as you don't overwork him."
"That's my thought too," he said.
"Only two days until we find out."
