Story (509 words) - terrible story sorry
To say that the colt's confidence was low was an understatement. His last win had come early in the 2017 season, the rest of his starts resulting in him being edged out at the wire or not firing at all. After his flop at the Derby, it only seemed like the wise thing to bring him back home.
The most prestigious race in Canada was the Queen's Plate. While it lacked graded status, it was still packed full of horses that would be considered graded stakes runners in any other field. Skye's competition was going to be tough, but that came as a shock to no one. It was going to be a full field, and the forecast called for rain. However, Skye had a long enough layoff that he was able to get used to the tapeta surface that the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown was run along. When he had first stepped on it, he had danced, unused to anything that wasn't turf or dirt. However, after a while he had settled, working nicely along it. Surface changes needed to not bother him. The plan was to run him in all  three legs of the triple crown. The first one was a mile and a quarter at Woodbine, along the synthetic. The second was at Fort Erie on the dirt, which would go a mile and three sixteenths. The final one was a mile and a half on Woodbine's turf course. Of course, Skye's style of frontrunner didn't seem to suit the longer distances. He had faded in the Derby quickly, and as Ashryn sat in her hotel room, looking at the projections on the Daily Racing form, it was apparent.
"Morning Line decides to set him at 8 to 1," she scoffed. "But then doesn't even pick him to hit the board."
"Who cares what Morning Line thinks?" Aaron said, and Ashryn smiled. "Besides, you're going to bet him anyways, and you were going to do it whether or not Morning Line told you to or not."
"Voice of reason," she said. "He got a decent post as long as he doesn't get boxed. With twenty horses, it's going to be a battle. There's definitely speed in here, and some horses that will go with him once they settle down."
"He's done it before with twenty horses," Aaron said. "He seemed to handle it fine. If anything, the weather might bother him. He tends to hate the rain we're forecasted to get."
"He's such a drama queen," Ashryn said. "Do you think he can go the distance?"
"He's given me no reason to believe otherwise, if I'm being honest. What we saw on Derby day wasn't him. He was blowing in the paddock and he was rattled in the barn."
"Let's hope the crowd doesn't get to him," Ashryn said.

Skye didn't seem to mind the people walking by his stall that morning, cameras trained on him. He had been through routines like this before. All he could do was pose for the cameras.

I didn't wanna take this avenue
Got better things to attend to
So many things that I gotta undo
Things inside you won't believe
Never been much for modesty
This was part of my prophecy
Executed it flawlessly
Nevertheless, you always leave
