Spring Is In The Air......and I'm going to try to get a bit more life in here, too.
I have not been drawing much in the last handful of months, though in January and February I had some fun getting my feet wet with resin work, metaphorically speaking. The photos felt a bit too makeshift to post here, but—
OK, enough with the sorta-negativity. I have been doodling/drawing a bit lately, and I want to draw more.
There are a lot of drawing challenges of the form "draw lots of images/sketches [to theme] month", and one for April is to draw fairies or fae creatures, under the heading of Faepril. So, there will be fairies incoming.
Little hitch at the start: I'm visiting family right now and don't have access to a scanner, but I can post something I sketched earlier this year.
Let's see what happens!
State of the AnkeWell, hi!
At some point I'd decided to do months journal entries about my general state of being, of course focusing on creative output. You probably noticed I haven't been keeping that up.
What's going pretty well at the moment is sketching little things. I signed up to ArtSlam and gave as my topic "drawing animals from reference to improve my foundation for making up critters", and only skipped one day sketching so far, and still averaged more than one sketch per day. (The turtles and deer are a part of that.) I am kinda getting bored of drawing critters from photos, but it helps that I can jump around the animal kingdom. After the deer and a few ponies, I'm tackling insects at the moment.
Writing is giving me more trouble. I've picked up fanfic projects I ignored for too long (as in, wrote drafts last November, then never touched them again for editing and posting), but it all still makes me anxious, and that's way worse with original ficiton. At least I finally managed to sort my f
State of WritingI'd made a goal of sorting out my writing files last week, because I'd misplaced some files and thus fell in a procrastination trap - not writing because I was not sure what I had written already, not editing because the story I wanted to edit was one I failed to find... anyway.
I still haven't edited/rewritten Handling Big Animals. (It's a short story, so, uh, for me it's long. And I get anxious about it because I want to write sequels of it.)
I have two bits of flash fiction that need edting still, but they are supposed to be one-offs, so I don't worry so much about their quality. Plus another that's part of a loose series and that I thought I'd lost entirely.
I've found two flashfic or short story starts that I forgot I'd written, and another two I had started that need an ending still, and the start for a longer short story.
So, that was worth the time I put into it.
When it comes to fanfic, I decided to try to keep updating four series I started in turn ( at on
A List Of FictionStrange Magic fanfic
Canon expansionMusic - Plan is one short ficlet each for each song in the movie. I should really work on that because it has a defined end, and it's anything on epic, so I could call it finished. The Very, Very New And The Very, Very Old - my main fic, I guess. So much to do.Changing Seasons - Projected for four chapters. One written. Since I want it to fit in the continuity of the above, a bit tricky.Mistreatment - Dark/Mirror Universe AU. I have a decent idea where it'S going for a while, but would need to get butt in chair (metaphorically speaking) and get it written.Isolation - Another more dark than canon thing. The "chapter" I have works as self-contained story. I have two continuations in mind, roughly, but no hurry because it's not chapters as suchTiny Thieves - Partly human AU. Not sure if there is much more to it than I haveRescue Mission - Role Reversal AU. I have an idea how tht might go, but I'm not certain I want to go there because corny.Scifi
New WebsiteIt's at ankewehner.com now, because I felt odd posting English content to a .de domain.
There's hardly any content on there, but it works, and I can post images and writing there first, crosspost it elsewhere later, and keep track of where the crossposts are.
Progress ReportI am keeping up the (near) daily doodling. (Some days I doodle more than one thing and then sometimes don't doodle a new thing the day I upload the second one, but on average, yeah.)
On my new website, I've made sites for all images I hadn't uploaded to my old site. This is confusing.
I also wrote alt texts for most of the images from this year, and built functionality to add cross references to posts on tumblr and such.
I'll probably only have images from this months there at launch, and add the rest a handful at a time, but that should be doable.
I cleaned out the queue at plant-fantasy, and started inviting art that had been sitting in my inbox waiting for that.
Not so much luck with writing fiction this week.
Projects overviewOK, so I'd planned to make a list of projects I'm working on, or would like to work on. So...
1. New website. A revamp of my personal website, that is. I've got a rough framework for it, and I don't need to migrate all the data right away, butbeen putting this off so long that I really want to launch it at the start of next month. Getting all images I drew this year up should be workable. I've uploaded all images, and they need descriptions and such added to the database.
2. Speaking of images, I'm trying to at least doodle a bit each day and upload the result. I've been putting that stuff on tumblr. Since November I lapsed 3 times, the longest break being 10 days, so all in all it's really a success. I'm not sure I can manage something today, though, because I've been working on my website and work stuff, and now I'm working on this entry.
3. Write original fiction. I liked writing and posting Flashfics, but I've fallen out of the habit of writing. I want to pick it up again.
How to Commission an ArtistI've been commissioning artists for a little over two years now, starting with site money on GaiaOnline and moving to dA from there. One thing that's hard for me to ignore is the number of artists who are concerned about being scammed, either because they've gone through that experience before or because the stories and warnings of it happening all the time proliferate. Commissioners have their own concerns about being scammed by artists. The simple fact of the matter is that it happens.
However, I think a good portion of the problem is that many people who want to commission an artist have no experience doing so, and it's not as easy to find instructions on it as, say, how to draw anime eyes. That's why I'm making this guide.
It should be noted that while I mention commissioning through other websites now and then, this is meant as to general guide, and all of the examples are from deviantart.com. Also, this does not

Poppies in the Blue
Daily Deviation 7/8/2015
Hello! My name is Ruth, though I am commonly known as kayaksailor on DeviantArt. I have been a photographer for most of my life, adding up to more than a half century of taking photos! I made the official switch from film to digital in May 2007 (about the same time as I joined DA) after getting my first dSLR, a Nikon D100, at a yard sale. As I am rather fond of flower gardens and the accompanying insects, those are my primary subjects and will be my examples for this article. Personal taste will dictate your scenes! Today's article will discuss some Depth of Field tips for Close-up flower photography!
First of all... What is a Close-up Photograph?
We will begin with two simple definitions of what Close-
All About Plz Accounts and How To Use ThemWhile DA gives us tons of awesome emotes to use, there is also a second, less known group of emotes here on DA that we can use as well. These are created by individual people and made into "Plz Accounts". A "Plz Account" is an account who's whole purpose of creation is simply to allow people the use of it's avatar. (see examples below)
One thing I get asked about quite a bit lately when I use emotes from a Plz account is "where do you get those emotes?" So I thought I would put a quick explanation as well as some plz account examples so they will be easy for other folks to find too!
Please keep in mind this is just a very small selection of the many Plz Accounts out there! I do have a collection of many many more listed permanently in my journal http://gypsy-.deviantart.com/journal/ on the right side, under "Plz Fun!"
(oh look! Cute dividers can even be found in Plz Accounts!)
Marketing Materials For ArtistsEDIT: Well butter my biscuits, some of my gifs disappeared into the interwebs. I'll remedy this soon!
It’s no secret that us artists aren’t great at selling ourselves. The creative process is so much work it’s easy to assume that your work will be able to sell itself. Sometimes it can, but that’s not usually the case. Even if you aren’t interested in going commercial with your career (and there is absolutely nothing wrong with going that route), it is important have professional materials to present to clients, employers and galleries. If you aren’t interested in being “full time” with selling your artwork, I think it would still be good to consider putting together marketing materials as a means of creating good client relations.
This journal will include a number of things you may need in marketing yourself, but also if you are applying to art schools or for various jobs in art. I would also like to note that you d

10 things to ask before you draw a Children's Book - Guest Post by Wilson Williams, Jr.

With the growth in popularity of the e-book many authors are seeing a glimmer of hope and realizing that they can get their work out there without having to break into the velvet roped publishing house exclusive party. This means that you will begin to get even more solicitations from those authors looking for artists to bring visuals to their words.
If you have a website or have done any degree of online advertising of your artwork, you have probably gotten an e-mail with a similar message as the title. If not, you will at some point. It's best to be prepared now. For those who have gotten it, nine times out of ten you aren't sure how to respond to it, what should you ask, how

Polymer Clay: What is it? and who is using it?It seems there has been a recent explosion in DA users who are now using polymer clay as a medium for their deviations.
To help out curious users who might be interested in what this medium is, how it works, or where they can get it I thought a NEWS article should be made. I shall also showcase some
deviations made with polymer clay. The data below is compiled from HanaClayWorks polymer clay FAQ and my own FAQ
What is polymer clay?
-Polymer clay is actually not clay at all. It is a form of plastic. (Specifically fine particles of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) suspended in plasticizer) The only reason it is called "clay" is because of it's clay like properties. It is a mold-able substance that can be cured in a normal oven (or toaster oven) and will retain it's shape and remain strong after baking.
Where can I buy Polymer clay?
-You can buy Polymer clay at craft stores like Michaels, AC Moore, Jo Ann Fab
What is Anthro?Too many people has the wrong idea about what does "Anthro" mean... even before deviantART created a whole gallery devoted to this special kind of art, there are still too many doubts about this category, and maybe that explains many of the mistakes when uploading pictures, images or drawings to our section.
Even when I was still not the Anthro Gallery Director , I tried to explain this concept in a journal entry but couldn't manage to make it clear, and now I think it's the perfect chance for a new attempt. ^___^ To start with, let's take a look at two definitions that may help us.
Anthro: a synonym for anthropomorphism in the furry fandom.
Anthropomorphism is the attribution of uniquely human characteristics and qualities to nonhuman beings, inanimate objects, or natural or supernatural phenomena (...)
Anthro Art and may be any fictional work that employs the concept of animal characters with human charac
