Love Me Again

“I made so many mistakes, Hilda. I never should’ve made Zethimus my advisor, I never should’ve listened to him. And now, our kingdom is fallen to his control.” Rhiston frowned, but the emotion in his heavy eyes betrayed any attempt to remain stoic. “Hilda, there were so many times I didn’t come after you when I should have. I’m not going to do that again. No matter how brave you are, how patient you are, I will always come after you. And I will fight to give our people, give our family, the freedom taken from them. Upon the goddesses above, I swear it. Hilda…I can only ask for your forgiveness.”
 
“After all this time…I-I suppose you want me to fall weakly into your arms and ask to be yours again? We had a relationship so distant and our daughters had to be raised here…and there…and despite all that…you would ask to just pick up where we left off to raise them together, grow old together…and…” Hilda trailed, voice wavering as Rhiston stepped closer to her, “What do you wish for…Rhiston? To live happily ever after?”
 
In that moment, Rhiston cupped her face, a weary smile giving him wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. And the tears within them, fell upon the stoic king’s face. “Yes, Hilda…to all of the above and more. You won’t need to cry anymore.”
 
“Y-yes I do, my love—“ Hilda cried as she fell into her husband, melting into the kiss he pressed to her tender lips. She held fast to his arms, hand trembling as she held his palm to her cheek. The queen wept, overcome by so many emotions. There was a taste of bitterness for the months they were apart, but that was overcome by love, forgiveness and sorrow. “I forgive you, Rhiston. Please…l-love me again?”
 
“Always, my love…”

Not always do I add little story pieces into my art descriptions, but this one deserved it! I started this piece back in 2022, and it's been quite some time now that it's been in the works. When I first changed the story for King Rhiston and Queen Hilda, this was the first thing I sketched. Finally was able to finish it of course, and I have no regrets on how long it took to do ;v; The moment takes place when Hilda was escorted to see her husband in the Gerudo Town dungeons. Honestly, seeing more of what that would look like in TotK, made it much easier to figure out the overall look of this painting
