I have a question for all you creations about there regarding a "Creative Types" webcomic. First a short explanation.

I have this obsession with making things as unique and original as possible. Not only that, but when I see a flaw in something, that flaw keeps me up at night until it's fixed. Now, I'm in a position where I can create whatever I want to create... however I still have an audience to captivate. I don't just wanna do whatever I wanna do without caring about the people who are gonna see it. So I have a question for you...

Do you think Scarlet is a bad name for a main character?... I'll explain. I decided to name her Scarlet WAY back in 2014 because I intentionally thought of the most stereotypical Alpha Bitch name. Now that I'm over that mentality, I realized that Scarlet is A) Not a very original name to give a main female character, and B) Not a very likable name... no offense to anyone named Scarlet out there... but in terms of fiction, it's synonymous with villainy and upperclass smugness. Not to mention that name is all over the place. If you google "fictional characters named..." the first female name that comes up is "Scarlett".

I don't know. I fully acknowledge that I might be over-thinking this. Penny's a pretty common fictional character name... but at least it's a cute likable name... no defense to anyone named Penny lol

But aside from what I think... what do you guys think?
Is Scarlet is bad name for a main character?
If so, should I dispatch the idea for a "Creative Types" webcomic for the soul reason that Scarlet is a bad name?
Will you be mad if I decide to make a webcomic about other characters that have nothing to do with Creative Types?
Should I hit myself in the head 27 times with a hammer to A) stop myself from over thinking stuff, and B) give myself a new problem to worry about?

I look forward to any feedback.

P.S. I still wanna make you guys laugh and forget about real life with my art. That's the one thing that'll never change.

(I know I'm late on this)
Honestly, I think Scarlet is a fine name for her. But, then again, that name is all I've come to know her by. It's sort of like how someone will grow up with one name then suddenly changes it, needing to change course and break that habit. so, if you want to change her name then go for it! She is, after all, your character and that is what matters!
As for the Creative Types comic, I would LOVE it if you'd make one. I was rather disappointed that C-Students was kinda canceled after the short run it had (I still have Possibility stuck in my head, thanks for that!) but after watching that gorgeous animation with those characters again, I've come to love the old stuff more than ever before. I've said it before on your video on Youtube (under the same name) that the song you made speaks to many people, including myself as a writer and artist, so to have a whole comic based on that would be phenomenal.
If you feel the need to create a new comic that doesn't have the Creative Types characters in it, go for it! It'd be fun to explore the different ideas you got in that awesome brain of yours! You are your own creative type that no one can imitate and I've love to see more of your creativity.
As for the hammer.... Eh, try not to. We need that brain of yours in one piece ;)

Scarlet in my personal view is a very beautiful name. Scarlet red like roses, beautiful roses with thorns. Though I understand ur concerns. Scatlet is used in lots of fictional art so I think Scarlet is a great name! But if u personally dont like it, may I offer some suggestions?
Jensonator Featured By Owner Mar 13, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
While most people think of the name Scarlet as a 'villain name', it's okay for a main character in my opinion. It will be different and be contrasted from the other Scarlet characters out there, since most of them are in fact villains/anything similar.

And as for the name Penny... Well, it's perfectly fine. ;) (Wink)

Scarlet is a cool name. And besides, you ALWAYS find something that looks a bit like yours and you ALWAYS get someone telling you that's a trace or copy. :D

To be honest, I don't pay too much attention to fictional character names, unless I'm currently reading Harry Potter and I see someone named Ron and I'm like "heyyyy"

Other than that it doesn't matter too much. I feel like if you do a good job at bringing the character to life, the name will mold to fit her, so that whenever I hear Scarlet I'm reminded of her instead of the other guys. Y'know?
CatGoatSnake Featured By Owner Mar 3, 2016  Student General Artist
Scarlet is a fine name (I have a character named scarlet myself) but if you think it's too overused you can change it.
Make whatever story you want, i'll probably read it regardless. If i say what kind of webcomics i don't read it might change what you'll put in the webcomic, and i don't want your comics or characters to be mainly based on what your fans say.You may end up with a webcomic you don't want. Your fans' thoughts should only change a bit of the story, not a lot, so that it's a story you like that is unique and original. If you don't wanna make a Creative Types webcomic, then you don't have to. if you want to, though, you're free to make one.

Also, don't hit yourself with a hammer at all. Other than you probably getting very bad injuries, it can damage your brain if you ever get that far without fainting or giving up.
Also, i don't think you can hit yourself with a hammer 27 times. Stopping at about 10 is what would seem logical.

I think you should discuss this with a counselor, but whether you change the name or not I will still think of her as Scarlet. When I see her I think "Hey it's that Scarlet bitch", I don't think "AnimatedJames needs to make up a new name for this person! How dare he uses such an awful name!" It may keep you up at night, but it's a satisfying name for the audience. Like I said, speak about this with a counselor; or if you have, get another and speak to them about it.

What's in a name?
SiIIyGirl Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2016  Student General Artist
Scarlet isn't a bad name for a main character. I think the name suits her, by that I mean how she looks and how she acts but in the Creative Types video you made it show her as someone who is not a stereotypical "Scarlet" which I thought was pretty cool. Honestly it's kind of hard to imagine her with a name other than Scarlet. Dude no one's gonna be mad if you make a webcomic about other characters that have nothing to do with creative types. I think it would be really cool to read/see it and hey, I like the new icons on DA and Youtube.
Vantaire Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2016  Hobbyist General Artist
I mean, you could play it off as though Scarlet was a nickname, that way you can still keep everything consistent, and have the ability to choose a new name.
TheIronScyther Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Dude. Name your characters whatever you want to name them. I personally don't see what's so wrong with that name. And I've been looking forward to this webcomic, the video has gotten me hooked on the characters and what they go through. But, hey! It's your work, whatever choice you make - Good luck with it!
CalebErnestMann Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2016
You should rename Scarlet "John Joseph Jingleheimer Smith".
Patorico66 Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2016
I don't care about the name. You are the content creator and only you can play god in your world because only you make the final calls. All I really want is for god to finally release the comics!!!! The name can stay as long as you make the comics.

Well, I mean it is a pretty unoriginal name (Iol i am so sorry i am just kidding dont kill me), but i am pretty sure no one actually will complain because of a simple name. I dont consider it a "bleh" name.
BlueStarSpeedArt Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
i see no problem with the name. i like to write so whenever i get stuck on names i just point to something random in my room and roll with it. i have a character named Kay and an other character named Mary because i pointed to a Mary Kay bottle XD sometimes its best to not over think names and just roll with what you got and everyone else will roll with it to.
DarkWolf1333 Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2016  Student Traditional Artist
Hmmm.....let's start out with saying that hitting yourself with a hammer is not the preferable choose of action. Now we can move on. Scarlett isn't a bad name for a character, although I'm certainly not one to speak about names (just ask Hackkk Bleh). But discarding an idea purely because of a naming problem is a little over the top. There's always a way around a road block, you just have to look outside the box if you're not finding it.
Ace-Catel Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2016  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I don't mean anything offending when saying this, but trying to aim for originality nowadays is extremely difficult. Almost every base of a good idea has been used, and can only be tweaked in order for it to be original.

So I just think you shouldn't worry too much on trying to aim for total perfection or total originality. I'm not saying you should start copying stuff from others either.
Just remember that you shouldn't push yourself too hard on making something totally unique. It's time consuming and stressful.

Also, as for the Scarlet name, it's not a bad name, but if you're a touch worried about picking a good name not being too common, try making a list of names and see where that leads you. Don't forget that names should satisfy the author more than the readers before the story is released.

After the story is released, do in all your power to make sure you don't rename the character once you make it official. (And it's only official when declared in the comic/episode/etc.)

I give you the best wishes.

I think Scarlet is a good name, it makes me remember to Erza Scarlet from fairy tail, maybe she's a little rude but she's also a hero so maybe it depends in how you relate the name. I know that it's difficult to name a character (I usually look for strange or old names), but I think that's the one you give her and you should let her be just Scarlet (obviously is your desicion to change or not her name, or even give her a nickname). I really want you to make the Creative Types webcomic, I even want you to do animations of them in highschool and how they ended up in their adult lifes, all because you make the characters funny and enjoyable no matter the name they have (really sorry for my bad english xD)
Spinball3 Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2016  Student Filmographer
A name doesn't make the character. The character makes the character. Personally, I'm fine with Scarlet being called Scarlet. I think it suits her just fine. But, if you still want to change it, you could have a plotline that explains she legally changed her name because no one took her seriously with her old name. Ultimately, it comes down to what you think is right. We may give the feedback, but it's your call about what you do with your art. Never burn a painting when you find a smudge, make that smudge work to your liking.
CeceFangirl Featured By Owner Mar 1, 2016  Hobbyist General Artist
I don't think a name makes a character, especially as a writer, a name is just a very special way to identify someone but if you build past the name it shouldn't matter. I had a character named Scarlet in my first work of fiction and she was a superhero, her power was pyro-manipulation (which I know no one asked). So purely a name is no reason to drop a story you love. You can always change it if it bothers you that much.
Vampire-kun Featured By Owner Edited Mar 1, 2016
Margaret Mitchell used this name for Scarlett O'Hara, the main character in her novel 'Gone with the Wind' (1936).
It's the 30th most popular feminine name in the US and the 17th most popular in England_and_Wales
The name derives from a surname which denoted a person who sold or made clothes made of scarlet (a type of fine and expensive woollen cloth in Medieval Europe).

As someone who's favourite book has a main character called Scarlet I really like the name, but ultimately she's your character so if you don't like the name then you can change it and I'm pretty sure your fans would understand

Hey James! I see where you're coming from, names are tough, wanting to please yourself and your audience is tough too.

In the end it really comes down to what you think, I checked out the comments and it looks like everyone is totally fine with the name Scarlett, and I agree with them, but if it bothers you that much maybe you should change it. It really comes down to how you feel about her and if you think Scarlett's a good match. I read calls for a nickname, so how about that? For when she becomes more likeable and so forth? (Just brainstorming here but if she has a secret geeky side, maybe she likes Pokemon and maybe she likes the name Red? Lol) I love the name Scarlett! I can see where one might have thought it as a bitchy name, but I see it as classy and classic! A name that'll make your audience think one thing at first but then realizes there's more to a person than their given name! C:

As a newer fan, I feel like answering the webcomics question might be unfair on my part...but still, I think you have the right to draw and express yourself however you like! Whether that means letting go of old project in pursuit of new ones or continue to explore your current wave of characters,... It's a long life. Take your time and enjoy what you are doing!

Take care!

1. No, I don't think it's a bad name. Could it be improved? Well, yes. Maybe something like Jessica, Christine, or Danielle. This site is really good for that if you want to come up with a different name for her:…
2. No, of course not. I think it would be a great webcomic. If the comic will only work if her name is Scarlet, then let it be Scarlet.
3. Not at all, I've enjoyed a lot of your work in the past, especially your webcomics.
4. Metaphorically speaking, yes. Literally, we want you to stay alive and without a headache so no.

XD I laughed about that part with the hammer, but I still completely get where you're coming from. Everytime I make a new character, I always obsess over the name until I get the perfect one that fits my character. When I look for a name, I first think about the character and one word that can fit thier personality. For example, I think the one word that fits my character is 'hopeful.' So, I google names that mean hopeful, and surf the web until I find a name that I think is perfect. Mine, example, is Charise, a name that means hopeful in French. I hope this helps you. :)

In the end, it is really up to you on who and what a character should be, as long as it is pleasing to you and ultimately good for what you wish to convey to the audience and have them take from your messages through that character. Personally, I love the way she is now, but more so through the angle she presents to the overall cast and their interactions with each other and the world they're in (a world I've consistently called a self-aware "slice of life" cranked to the 11th degree). Hope I'm not being confusing or vague, but she's great the way she is man. However, if you do feel there is something that needs to be changed about her, whether it be superficial such as name or style, or as complex as her background, I say go for it if you feel it is necessary for what you want to artistically achieve through her use in the story. You have a great, supportive community from what I've seen so far in my short sty in it, and if I'm right in my assumptions they/we are behind you all the way with whatever you may end up choosing.

Keep up the amazing work man, can't wait to see more.

You have several options, including, but not limited to:

-Keep the name Scarlet
-Rename the character to something else and continue with the series (which may or may not include retro-actively changing her name in already completed works)
-Make a new concept, ditching "Creative Types" (which may or may not include salvaging characters from previous series)
-Hitting yourself in the head with a hammer (which is the least desirable option on this list)
-Retract "Scarlet" as her real name and declare it a nickname, and give her a different real name.

From personal experience and trying to come up with names
If it feels like it fits her, then the name is for her. You need to think about the character, yeah she was a bitch and the name can link to 'evil' and antagonist but in another light, it can link to cunning, resourceful, and beauty. Scarlet is a color of red and can even link to passion. I honestly think it would be alright to keep it as is. But if you look at her and see a different name, go with it! A name is never a bad name unless it doesn't fit the character right. Like Penny, if you gave Penny the name Scarlet, sure the hair matches but Penny is more determine, innocent and self conscious of herself more openly so Scarlet wouldn't be a name that would look good on her.

On the comic, if it feels right, go for it. Even if the name is 'bad'. When plenty of us met the cast in typical high school setting, plenty fell in love so if you want to make their world bigger in a new light it would be awesome. I feel more people would be connected to it too since heck, plenty of us want to be creative but sometimes we only see one way to be creative, you can easily help show people you can be anything and have creativity. But if you choose to go another route, then good on you. I've tried a lot but gave up after while making a couple of comics because nothing felt right, but once you find a great idea, let it live.

I'm an over thinker-myself so saying is a lot easier than doing but, hey, try and relax. Give a day for you. Yes making a comic means you get to do what you want but also keep in mind what people like but always give yourself a day to do whatever the hell you want. It's hard to be happy with ourselves all the time but we should never forget we, ourselves, matter.

Good luck James! Rooting for you!

I think what you have is fine dude, if tou wanna change it I don't see why not. Since it could technically be an alternate universe of sorts to c students, I don't see why not change some of the names if you feel. Sure some people might complain but I think the majority of people won't really care as long as you make it funny and it's made by you. So just keep on being you James and we will love what you put out for us.

The fact you're getting so worried about a name is to be brute a bit surprising to me! Personally, I found the name Scarlet to be more of a bad a$$ name than anything... How I normally decide names is that the name should fit the character's personality! Like when you mentioned that the name Penny is more of a cutsie name, one of my O.C.'s is actually named that and she's WAY over positive for her own good...! I doubt i'll be that #1 deciding factor out of the millions but this is just my thought process about it all... :meow:

Hmmm, you're talking about the blonde one right?  When I hear Scarlet, I think of someone with a temper and while your blonde has those kinds of moments, I don't know if the them suits her.  Someone like her (who appears to be upper class) needs a more dignified sounding name that still sounds commanding.  What kind of background does she have exactly?  Hell, she could even get away with a family name (a last name used as a first name type).  Umm, how about Clarissa or Madison?

At the end of the day though it's still your choice.

Hello James! My first post on one of your deviants. Personally I like the name scarlet! Look James, no name is original. Someone already had a name similar. But if you really want to, you could say that she really had a different name and scarlet was a nick name. IDK! Personally I'm pumped for this comic and while you strive to make everything original, it doesn't all have to be. Heck, almost every story ever told is unoriginal! But scarlet is a character that people love! You can make original stuff, but if your trying to please fans also, you should keep the name, or maybe it was just a nick name! This is also coming from a guy who only saw your shows recently and I love all your characters! Scrapping an entire comic because of a name just wouldn't seem logical. In my opinion, you should let your characters be the characters they are!

there's nothing wrong with the name Scarlet for a main character name. From what it's been looking like, i can assume the main characters will be featured equally, so i see no reason to fret over the rarity of a single name, as long as the other names aren't too unique (which they're not)
