Pandora by angrywhitewanker Pandora by angrywhitewanker
I finished this about a month ago but didn't get a round to putting it up. Honestly, I couldn't find an appropriate category to put this in. It's mythology which is like fantasy, but its not quite "sword and sorcery." I could put it under portraits, but of a fictional character? Whatever.

This is Pandora. Why a vase-like container instead of a box? Because there was never a box. In a mistranslation of Hesiod's Works and Days, the word "pithos" (meaning a large type of jar) was replaced with "pyxis" (a small box-like container).

I tried to infuse some symbology of her as an archetype of the first woman and bringer of evil (her story is very simlar to Eve's in Genesis).

Oil on board. 16" x 20"

Belo. I like the analogy of Eve and Pandora,  also very similar to Prometheus (Fire) and Lucifer (Light)

Although it may be taken as a prerogative, curiosity is not exclusive to women. I like the analogy of  Eve and Pandora, similar to my own thoughts about Prometheus and Lucifer, both punished for a gift to humankind by somewhat tyrannical gods. Although Yahweh/Jehovah alone claims exclusivity among divinity.

My favourite myth!
I like how you used a jar instead of the more famous box.
Also, relating her to eve... very interesting. That's one aspect of the myth I never considered.

Excellent details bro...where do get your models(the girl, and the back ground..) whta type of oil paint are you using? did you try water mixable oil paint already? what is you standard size?
I'm a newcomer.. i started painting last year of september though, i focused on floral details.. then now im exploring anatomy and other human elements.. i like you color combination, i wish you could help me build a good signature color like yours..if you don't mind..

Very very nice piece of work. The jar of course, is far more appropriate to a myth such as Pandora than a box. Love the way you have dressed her in green instead of the ubiquitous Greek-myth white :)

And yes...I agree with you. Being a Christian...Pandora's story is simlar to Eve's. But we must remember...even though that woman was the first one to take a bite of that apple...man took a bite too. So really...it was both of them that were the bringers of sin and evil into this evil.
But yeah...Pandora's story is simlar to Eve's.
It's just like the story of Hercules is simlar to the story of Samson. Both were really strong men. Samson got his strength from God while Hercules got his strength from being the son of a God.
But Samson was a real man. Hercules was just a myth.

And thanks for pointing out that Pandora's box was a jar. I never knew that.
