Hi all, I've got a bit more time since work is slowing down a bit so I'm able to get more stuff done for my writing and preparing to continue writing Stormdancer
. For those of you who aren't aware of what Stormdancer
is or what it's about, keep reading.
Stormdancer: A Dystopian Retelling of Pocahontas.
Yes, you've read that right. Ever since retellings have increased in popularity, I wanted to do my own. I still wanted to set myself apart from the other authors out there, so instead of doing a retelling of something that's done already (that I know of... examples: Alice in Wonderland
, Peter Pan
, etc.), I wanted to focus on my favorite: Pocahontas. It was a hard choice because I also wanted to do something on Mulan, but my love for the Native American culture trumped Mulan's story.
Now, don't think I'll be taking things from Disney's Pocahontas
, because I still wanted to keep things realistic in a way. Reality is far more brutal than a Disney film, that's for sure, and considering my love for putting my characters through hell, the story will be, too. But, what exactly is Stormdancer
(Current summary is a first draft and may not be what is seen on the back of the book upon publication)When the world ends, the Native Americans take back the land they have lost. But history is repeating itself and only a young Lenape woman, her guides, and her tribe can stop it... if only they would just listen to her through their hearts hardened by the massacres centuries ago. Their new beginning comes with a price, but are they willing to pay?
Anaya is a young. Lenape woman just trying to get through her midterms when a weather anomaly destroys the majority of the human civilization, bringing the world back into the dark ages. When she flees her Pennsylvania home to go back to her tribe located in Northern New Jersey, her life is changed and such a change has altered the fate of the surviving humans fighting to live at all costs. Upon her arrival to her tribe, she finds that the already-thin line between the physical and spiritual planes have collided into each other, showing them the effects of the hatred of the Time Before, the world before the cataclysm, and only she wields the power to cleanse the dark spirits and return the balance. Knowing she can't do it alone, she turns to her animal guides, an atypical friend, and her tribe, but things don't go so smoothly when her friend joins a band of people looking to take her tribe's location for themselves. Risking history repeating itself, Anaya must find a way to make her friend's and her own people understand that without them working together, there is no future. For anyone.
The spirits are angry. The balance is gone. Time is running out.--------
, I've done a lot of research and wrote in some of the Lenape/Native American lore. It's been a lot of fun writing it so far and I started writing during last year's NaNoWriMo. I hit 50k early that November but I have still a long ways to go. I will be doing things differently with this book and taking the time to get professional editors as well as beta-readers to ensure an engaging, satisfying story for everyone
I'm looking for beta readers!
Seriously, if you're interested in reading this early and helping me better the story, please let me know and I'll start sending out beta reader-ready files when they're available. Please know that this project isn't near the beta reading stage just yet. This is for the near future and I will let everyone know when I've grown closer to said stage.
