This handsome fellow here was a special commission from a nice old man I received at the beginning of the summer. Due to time constraints, it was about 2 months or so before I could even start on it, then it took me another 2 months to finish it.
The customer had in his yard a little rusted mining cart full of rocks. He had been a miner most of his life, and he wanted a miner to go with his cart.
This was... a surprisingly difficult project. Despite the fact that I'd made the pattern as simple as possible, actually building it presented all sorts of difficulties and design quirks I hadn't planned on. The face in particular had me more then a little leery. I haven't done many human forms. Faces are incredibly hard to craft and have them look natural and not-weird, especially mouths. Human mouths are the bane of my creative design.
I am extremely happy with how this guys face turned out. It even surprised me how natural, relaxed, and pleasant it was. The fact my design unintentionally gave him the appearance of an elderly man, with a large nose, that also happened to look more then passingly similar to his owner, was pretty dang nifty.
There are a few recycled things in this sculpture as well. The mining pick is crafted from an old pick I had on hand. His helmet is made from a small mixing bowl (the customer plans to get a custom sticker printed to go on the hat that will match the one on the cart), the eyes are washers with blue marbles in them (once this guy rusts all over, the marbles will really stand out).
The picture above features the completed sculpture by itself (Left), then the final product once it was mounted to the cart (Right). With a bit of time and weather, Mike will rust up wonderfully and match the cart, though his hat will remain distinctly shiny for some time.

The miner stands a little under 3ft tall, and weighed around 70lbs. The cart is 22in long and 19in tall. The miner is attached via welds under the hand.
