Choose Your Poison

By AngelaSasser
"I will prepare a draught for you, with which you must swim to land tomorrow before sunrise, and sit down on the shore and drink it. Your tail will then disappear, and shrink up into what mankind calls legs, and you will feel great pain, as if a sword were passing through you."

"But think again," said the witch; "for when once your shape has become like a human being, you can no more be a mermaid."

-From Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid"

Another illustration for my Illustration Techniques I class. The technique we practiced in this piece was the acrylic transfer process. We transfered laser prints using gel medium and painted on top with acrylic paint. This was my first time using artist grade acrylic paint to create an image and I am so very pleased with it!

Mayhaps more of this method in the future?

12"x16", Acrylics and acrylic transfer on wood panel.

I teach a fantasy unit at my school and the students are always shocked to learn that in the original Little Mermaid story, Ariel dies. You really created a powerful piece here. I bought this bookmark when I was at DragonCon. I love it!

I especially like that neat texturing in the background and the colors!

It's amazing how handy sponges are for those sorts of textural effects. It's fun to get sloppy with the paint every now and again!

I don't have a copyright on Hans Christian's fairy tales so as long as your image isn't tracing mine, you should have nothing to worry about:nod: Do give me a link as I'd love to see it:D

Thanks! It's amazing how effective a non-descript colored haze can be!

this is nice. the lighting on the mermaid's "fish" section is truly well done.

All thanks to nature. I basically tinted the laser print decal of a photomanip I did that was then transfered to the canvas with acrylic medium. It's a neat process I was experimenting with for this piece. It's awesome how you can paint over the initial transfer to make it match what you want.
