It hangs over my daily life like a bat in a dark cave, as if it had broken through time and become cemented in a pose that doesn’t belong to it. A rusty face surrounded by a halo, it looks like corroded metal kissed by a sudden burst of light - exposing all wounds. It waits - silently - with one hand outstretched, always begging for a touch, always pleading for a caress. A mannequin of hope and shame, a river of blessed waste. Its nails almost brush my hair, and in the periphery of my vision I see its flesh: shining skin, dark faces reflected in it. Its arm is like water stirred by a note from the depths of the earth, with the souls of the forgotten melted into it, staring straight at me, screaming to be released. Poem: Church of the Unpermitted

(858 words) I built a church around the belief of my own perceived unworthiness and called it humility. Because it sounded sacred, and no one will ever argue with someone who kneels humbly in prayer. In silence, I set up an altar to my wounds, not of candles and gold, but with the ordinary tools of avoidance: A sheet of paper that stayed impeccably clean. A pencil whose sharpened tip never touched paper. And a promise of “one day”, folded like a clean vestment never to be soiled. I came there every day like a devoted novice, and recited the old prayer until it felt like absolute truth: I am not ready. I am not good enough. I will begin when I am forgiven by perfection. My angel has skin made of copper. In the corner of my eye, where shadow meets sun, I see the figure. Every time. I can’t escape it, and I don’t want to. It hangs over my daily life like a bat in a dark cave, as if it had broken through time and become cemented in a pose that doesn’t belong to it. A rusty face surrounded by a halo, it looks like corroded metal kissed by a sudden burst of light - exposing all wounds. It waits - silently - with one hand outstretched, always begging for a touch, always pleading for a caress. A mannequin of hope and shame, a river of blessed waste. Its nails almost brush my hair, and in the periphery of my vision I see its flesh: shining skin, dark faces reflected in it. Its arm is like water stirred by a note from the depths of the earth, with the souls of the forgotten melted into it, staring straight at me, screaming to be released. Its eyes, sunken in that indifferent, stale face, are like a conversation with a god who has abandoned his creation.
