Mermaid2 by anestezja Mermaid2 by anestezja
Not far from where I live there's a ruined church standing on a cliff edge. Actually, there's only one wall left standing - the other three were taken by the sea. The church was built in the 15th century; legend has it that after it was built, fishermen from that village caught a mermaid in their nets; they wanted to release her, but the village priest insisted that she be baptised. So she was put in a wash tub filled with holy water and locked over night in the church. In the morning, they found her dead. To avenge her death, her father, the king of the Baltic Sea, destroyed the church.

Apparently her name was Zielenica :( I love how weathered you made the tiles look. Great painting.

Thanks! There isn't much in English but you can check this out: www.staypoland.com/about_trzes… (scroll down to History). And Wikipedia has an article on the church: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_i… .

Is that the actual legend or did you just make that up? Because if you actually live somewhere with a legend like that, that is AWESOME!

Haha, no, it's an actual legend (and not the only one pertaining to the ruins). BTW, here's a nice shot of the place: [link] . I live 15 kms from there. And as for lore, there also was a sunken city and a legendary Viking stronghold in the region ;).

WOW! Sounds like you live in a place with lots of mystery and intrigue to draw from. I'm kind of envious. Where I live, the only real mystery I ever encountered was whether or not there was a skunk ape in the area. [link]

That's as big a mystery as it gets! Was it ever explained? Do you think they are real? (btw the link at the end of your comment leads to DA home page -- did you mean to put something else there?)

Well my Dad explained it as a bunch of teenagers starting a rumor. But then, he's never been one to credit the paranormal. He's a military man born and bred.
Yes, I meant to put one of those little emoticons there, but I haven't quite figured that out, pathetic as that might seem.
By the by, do you have Amazon.com where you are? Because if you do, you should check out the Animal Planet documentaries on the possible existance of mermaids. There are two. Mermaids: the Body Found, and Mermaids: New Evidence.
How much of them are fact and fiction I leave up to you. But I tell you, I walked away from those documentaries bursting with ideas!

Great, thanks, I'll definitely check them out!
I know a lady whose late husband was a well-known sasquatch researcher. I talked to her and her daughter-in-law and they both told me about their sasquatch sightings in Canada. Very matter-of-factly :). They are very reliable, down to Earth people and I've no reason to doubt their words.
So personally, I choose to believe ;).

This is beautiful! I love the pale colors you used for her skin tone, it really does make her seem eerie and otherworldly, I also like the seaweed trailing over the tiles and her tail, it looks as though she really has just been dumped there
