Queen Chrysalis Returns, inks- My Little Pony

By andypriceart
424 Favourites
From issue #1, page 19 of MLP: FiM from IDW Publishing. These are the final inks that were done for what was easily my favorite page from the entire issue... not only are all the Mane 6 here, so is Spike, and the big reveal of the one that became my absolute favorite to draw, Queen Chrysalis. Various inking tools were used, including PITT pens, mechanical pens, two different dip nibs, and primarily a #4 Raphael Kolinsky sable brush. A mix of Dr. P.H. Martin's High Carb and Matte india inks was used.

Here are the original pencils for comparison

I apologize if this has been asked before, sir, but do I detect a bit of P. Craig Russell influence in the center image of Chrysalis? I'm a huge fan of his work with the comic adaptations of the Elric Saga. (And I've become quite a fan of your work as well.)

Nope... I certainly appreicatte his work, but I've never really been a follower of his. My inspirations of Estaban Marato and Bernie Wrightson are what's showing through here.

Bernie Wrightson's name sounds familiar, but I don't believe I've heard of Estaban Marato; in either case, I'll have to look for some examples of their work. Your own piece reminded me of this, so I suppose I started spotting connections that weren't there...

P.S. I love all of the throwaway jokes in the comic's panels. Sometimes I feel like the only fan who spotted this one.

I can use this to aid my own pen and ink work with the great reference of cross-hatching found in this!

Yeah, it really shows that you like Chrysi there. :3
Good job for capturing her emotional evilness(?).
Not to say the least the use of a great disposition of the frames. :D

The orb panel in the center has been my favorite panel across the entire comic series so far. The warped perspective that bugs out her eye, the cross-hatching that puts much of her in shadow... it's all such a dramatic reveal that commands attention. Great, killer stuff.

in Issue 4 of MLP Chrysalis's queeny hat was dented, i think she should sue that there Sparkle girl! (ya know, for the expenses of new and improved queeny hat)

Given time, I'm sure eventually she'll get a chance to bring up the issue ;)

The comic is an ongoing monthly magazine published by IDW Publishing, and is the only officially licensed MLP comic. Check your area for comic shops, it's about to hit issue 6. They can also be digitally purchased on itunes or comixology. Also look for the mlp Micro-series, each issue features a different pony star!
