For the cover of MLP 17, I took a slightly different approach to finishing it up... typically if I do a marker color cover, I have to be very careful of how I ink. I typically ink outlines only with a Faber Castell PITT pen, do my color work, then do fine and detailed inking with a brush and india ink. There can be no mistakes, as you can't use markers over white out. I can't ink with a brush first, or the markers will reactivate the ink, and smear it.

When I was working on this I decided I wanted to have a little more freedom with my inking, so I inked it as if it were intended to NOT be colored... that is, I could make finer details and effects or corrections with white out, and not worry about what the markers may smear. Once I was done... I made a full size high quality copy on a sturdy cardstock, and hand-colored that one rather than the original instead.

Notice up top, the bottles with the Elements of Harmony on them... they were not finished as I knew the comic logo would cover them... my intention was to hit them with my airbrush rather than markers to get a weird glowing effect on each of them.... but, once art is ready for production purposes, it's hard to make time to go back and do the stuff just for you. It will be finalized shortly before Convention season, so I can make limited prints :) When doing a cover it's easy to leave such areas blank or featureless as it's going to be covered, but I like to be happy with the end result if to please nobody else but myself.

This is the first part of a new 4-issue story by Katie Cook and myself, which is one we've looked forward to doing for some time!

Original artwork is 11x17 on Bristol Board, brush and india ink, copic markers.

Reflections is one of my favorite arcs from the MLP comics and I really like the Starswril introduced in the arc more then the one introduced in the show

thank you! He was slightly based on what we did, visually anyway

Since I bought a collection featuring the entire Reflections arc, I got the cover without text. But something was still up with the bottles. The Honesty bottle was shattered, and the Magic bottle was missing altogether.

simply a photoshop modification to allow for the logo on the standard cover.

for someone who has been mentioned all the time and has done a lot in MLP, I wanna see a flashback with this guy!

Interesting that those flasks have pictures of present time elements. How could he know?

Please tell me that's Vulcan script on those pages.

Uh-oh, Star Swirl's hat and cape don't match Twilight's costume; I assume this picture takes place five seconds before she starts breathing into a paper bag.

It's a shame that this couldn't have been used as a splash page instead of the cover. But I'm jealous of your inking ability! My lines are frequently wobbly and of strange thickness. I can only imagine what difficulty you'd have with making something this ornate without any leeway. And thanks for sharing about your process!

Yeah, having a steady hand is difficult, both in digital and hand inking. I know I shake like a leaf, especially since I haven't gotten fully into the habit of using my forearm for broad/long strokes.

What helps me is quicker movements, and I keep my eye on the point where I want the line to end instead of following my stylus/pen. But I'll have to try using my forearm more!

It helps a bit. The hardest part is not looking down; I'm used to sketching with a pencil.

bought and read it. aplauds. very nice..........
though a little overboard with the references. waay to many, though i will admit this alternate stuff probably made stuffing as many pony parody puns perfectly presentable.
find a term used for the constant references over the internet. called non diegetic. means that things like dc references and songs in the show are viewed by us and itnerpreted dfiferent by the characters.
think largely to help preserve sanity foir bronies and guys writing fanfics.

also i like that touch on the sides, pinkie and rainbow spotting their alternates in the mirrors.

there is no such a thing as "too many references!"

well if it is oneveyr single page of a comic i would say it ws too many............. then again the comic did not have one on every page. guess it didn't have too much............

then again, the helm of naboo, the golden gun, a giant coin ala batman museum collection, a jeckel and hydde potion............ dem references were all over the place. i thoguht they only explored one world that entire time..
thenagain it does bring the image of celestia beating up a pony james bond equivalent to get the golden gun which is amusing in its own rights.

I do the same thing: get good quality copies of my sketches and then color them.

The bottles with their cutie marks! The reflections. The suspense.
