I'll admit that I waffled on this one for quite a bit.  The reason is that the end result is so incredible.  This is awe-inspiring to me.  I'll just have to summarize or I'll go on forever about this.

1.  The idea was that it was a primal, brutal setting that had prehistoric beasts.  The barbarian king you see here is certainly familiar with metal, but his people have techniques to turn bone as strong as steel.  Hence his scepter/war standard/weapon of his ceratosaurus skulls.

2.  The barbarian king as neighbors, who rule softer, decadent civilizations.  He has no qualms about taking what he wants from them.  Hence the riches and trophies you see piled about with abandon.  What he does take is offered to him as tribute.

3.  He is older, late thirties or early forties.  He's learned the values of wisdom and patience.  Perhaps even education.  He is a barbarian, but he is not stupid or uncultured.

4.  He is seen here with two of his girls.  The redhead was originally captured in a raid and has been his concubine for a quite a while.  She secretly views his attempts to get educated with disdain.  The dark-haired girl is a princess who was given over to him as tribute.  Learning she was educated, he eagerly demanded lessons from her, which she is eager to provide.

Some inspirations for this included a dash of Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones and a whole lot of Frank Frazetta.

I really like the small details added to tell a story within the picture. If you hadn't pointed them out, I wouldn't have noticed, and I'm glad attention was called to them.

Great scene and background! Given a little time our redhead will realize she's just a bit jealous. I'm sure she can think of some things to get the big boys attention :D (Big Grin)

Just the first book.  I have a weird relationship with that series.  I readily recognize the mastery of writing that it represents, but don't actually enjoy reading them.

My wife's like that.  I liked them better when we got to stuff not yet on TV.  4 and 5 were great!

Very well done, the scene sets the stage for perhaps, a prelude to an upcoming battle that, even now, he may be thinking of a strategy while listening to his educated captive read from that scroll, maybe he is lost in thought over events that have transpired a few hours before that may lead to a battle later.

So many different ways to view this scene.

This guy did great with this one.

It took me a while to reply to this because your comment was so good.  You really had a lot to say and I loved how you took several different interpretations of it.  Thank you for that.

You don't see a whole lot of art that makes you really think about the scene these days, it's good to see they are still around.

It can be difficult to express a story using a still image.  It can certainly be done, but it takes extra effort.  Me, I love story, so I really try to have that stuff in my gallery.  Even then I have to do a lot of sequential art to tell a story.

There's certainly a LOT of static poses and close ups on DA.  I help run a group called :iconbadass-characters: and I really try to push for stories or at least some dynamism, especially in contests.

What could he be pondering in that mind of his. Perhaps he feels he needs more concubines? Or More riches? Or maybe. Just maybe. That he needs to have a successor soon.

He still needs to choose a successor among all the bratty kids he may have. It ain't easy raising a child, let alone one worthy to lead your kingdom. And I'm sure there's enough selfish little pricks running around to ruin everything he's ever made.

Me too.  I grew up reading the Ace edition books.  They were heavily bastardized, but they did have the Frank Frazetta covers.
