Old Library A - Patreon Illustration Pack 06 by andreasrocha Old Library A - Patreon Illustration Pack 06 by andreasrocha
So, as promised, here is the first painting based on the thumbnail sketches I did last week on the theme "Old Library". Let me know your thoughts, both positive and negative, to see if I can still improve this piece.
This is part of this month's Illustration Pack on my PATREON page.

Arriving a bit late - I have not so much a thought as a response. This painting strongly appeals to me.

It reminds me of libraries I have known - some of my favorite places - and what register in my mind as 'high tech' visual displays at upper right - suggest to me that this old library is indeed old, and is being viewed at some time well after the present. That evokes both good memories from my past, and a type of fiction which I have and do enjoy.

GREAT atmosphere and lighting, really realistic. Feels like I can jump into it, reminds me of the library at Hogwarts!

I just want to go wander through this- great feel....

I love the atmosphere. If I were able to, I'd like to walk around this library myself :)

At first I thought how you placed the horizon and vanishing point was a little awkward since it feels like I'm being forced to look at a bunch of book shelves, but I also think it works if it were meant to feel like we were looking at some books before something in the hallway caught our eye.

Ah but what do I know? I'm just an amateur really ^.^'

this is great! i particularly like that we can peek into another hidden room on the other side of the bookshelf.

on that note, one of my favorite things about libraries is the feeling of holing somewhere secluded and almost protected from the outside world. after all, that is kind of how we interact with books sometimes. so there are a few things about this painting that run counter to giving me that cozy feeling and instead make me feel a little exposed.

because of the windows in the upper right, and the lack of rows/alleys leading deeper into the library, i feel like as the viewer i am on the outside edge of the library. i want to be deep inside. or at least have a way to cut horizontally into the stacks instead of being stuck on the outside edge.

also the bright light at the end of the hallway looks like it could lead outside or into a big well lit space. i think the lighting in the rest of the painting does a good job of creating a subdued, cozy and dim space. the bright light feels a bit intrusive and disruptive, like someone waking you up by turning on the lights. a library like the kind portrayed here should be almost sleepy and warm, maybe with a bit of rainy weather light drifting through small windows. any kind of brighter light feels invasive.

those are my thoughts, and obviously based on lots of personal feelings and associations. i'm curious if you have thoughts about this!

Maybe add some hints of some guests cloak floating around a corner but otherwise this is a piece very well depicting the kind of library you'd go in to "just get that one book" and return two weeks later with a satchel full of additional, absolutely crucial information :)

Nice! Is there a place where i can see the thumbs? Can't find them.

I'm afraid I can't offer any critique, but I like the fact that there are other items besides books in this library. The variety makes it more interesting :)

I love how it's not just books but there's also busts and globes added into this scene. One of my favorite concepts about libraries is that they're not just a place for books, they're a place for knowledge. And sometimes books don't convey knowledge as well as other forms, so well done for adding in those other tools of enlightenment!

That is a really mysterious library. If we are talking about improvement, I'd say the atmosphere is perfect. I am not sure what your visual goal is, but currently my eye is led back in space along the path between the shelves. The lamps themselves have a really solid amount of detail surrounding them so I am guessing that is the leading point. My only suggestion would be to add a little bit more in the way of existence in the foreground, to differentiate further in space, but not so much that the original focal point is undermined, and the eye still goes back through the shelves.

Wow, I love this space. I want to explore a bit and find out how you get from the hall into the rooms behind the shelves.
