Beauty and Nightmares by Andantonius Beauty and Nightmares by Andantonius
Here's a collaboration between Carl Knox and I for the Beauty and Nightmares competition over on CA, and it conveniently doubled as an assignment for Painting class. The assignment was basically to do a Diptych (Two separate paintings that go together) with the theme of Beauty and Nightmares.

It was quite the long haul, this things probably gotten 40 hours of work poured in to it, if not more. It was quite the challenge to plan and collaborate two pieces and get the design working separately and as a whole, all while trying to maintain a consistent style between both images. Learned a ton in the process though, and that's the main thing.

Hope ya dig it! And before anyone asks, no this was not inspired by PotC, we started this two months ago so curse them for making this idea mainstream before the contest deadline. xP

Have a good one!

Thanks! I actually made this without ever seeing that and they inconveniently came out at the same time. =P
The mermaid thing's been done time and again though so I'm not worried, haha.

There's a wonderful sense of depth in the picture where the man is being taken under, and I love how the first one is so cute and the second so twisted :meow: Really nice job on the interaction between the man and mermaid in the first picture ;)

Lol i always liked the disney version of the little mermaid, though when i grew up and learned the true story behind it.. well the first thing I thought was.. huh...so.. even though people try so hard to accomplish something they want, circumstances come to way (for example another marriage) in the end it was all a facade to see what they refuse to see and denies themselves something more than just another person.. thats depressing...I think you're painting pressed that thought more so into my mind.

haha yea, I guess it was food for thought. I was actually quite surprised to hear all these disney stories were never what I wished them to be like. Sadly I seen a few friends their minds warped to these non-realistic ideals at times. Sigh. But how you been?

That is absolutely gorgeous :) I love the lighting in both scenes. It sets the mood really well. The colors are just amazing, too, and the way you both used loose, almost sketchy brushstrokes... I just can't stop staring at it.

You guys did great on this; all the wateryness and lighting and figures are superb! I think I like beauty better overall, but Nightmare is just full of lovely details that you find more of each time you look at it. Just when will men learn not to trust pretty ladies of the sea?

And I dunno, I don't think we'll ever learn. They have fins, boobs, and they sparkle, what's not to trust?

This is absolutely stunning. The colours, lighting, composition and, more importantly, storytelling are perfectly executed... I'm seriously awestruck, it must have been a difficult piece with the perspective and the under-water scene but you've pulled it off perfectly and done another amazing job. Great interpretation of the theme too! :'D

Thanks dozdozdoz! I'm glad you like it, tis much appreciated!
And yeah, it was pretty tricky with the perspective, but some problem-solving and good reference saved the day. Could be better still, but it's aight!
Thanks! :B
