My nine years on dA - thoughts and conclusions

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 2, 2014, 1:21 PM

Hello little ones. :heart:

If you still remember who I am, you probably noticed that my activity in recent years has dramatically decreased. Although being 'quite' alive on Tumblr and sometimes Facebook, I gradually withdrew (is that the right word?) myself from online communities due to lack of submissions and stuff to update in general. Real life struggles and tremendous amount of work took away both my time and will to sit focused during free evenings and create for myself. Doing freelance for living is satisfying, but in the long term becomes a killer for creativity, energy and social life. Especially when you're assigned to three big projects at the same time and suddenly you have no idea where the last five months have gone. O_O (happening to me atm)

But enough of that. Today I realised it'll soon be NINE years since I joined dA. Not only do I feel old (:wtf:), but somehow... proud? Well, I didn't accomplish a lot, especially considering my goals from that time (ya know, being extremely popular, likable, having lots of popular friends, etc - the regular teenage dreams xD), but being aware that I've been part of the biggest art community for almost a decade is... very pleasing. I sometimes like to look back at my beginnings and see how I and the site changed. And I somehow miss those times when everything was new and I was just at the start of my online artistic journey.
During that journey I discovered hundreds of amazing artists who gave me inspiration and motivation to improve. I was a gallery moderator, I organised contests, events, gave first Daily Deviations (when they were still a huge exposure) to people who later evolved into fantastic artists (with Charlie-Bowater or anikakinka among them, whose careers I was lucky to observe almost from the beginning), etc. I got five Daily Deviations myself and got chances to appear on the front page three times or so. I've also had wonderful watchers who've been there with me for most of the time, some for almost as many years as I, which is even more amazing.

Nowadays hardly anyone visits my page anymore, almost half of my watchers is inactive/left dA, I have no time to keep my profile updated and no new stuff to submit anyway, so no wonder I'm being forgotten. It doesn't bother me that much anymore, but remembering how obsessed I used to be with popularity makes me a little sad. xD And you know what? I wish I could start anew with a fresh account, ereasing my whole dA history from the web. To again have that feeling of a start and refreshed motivation. I know I can create a new account, but there's no point in reuploading my pictures somewhere else if they're already everywhere in internet under my current nickname. And I don't want to get rid of 'anako' either. So I'll just sitck to my old account, but for now... will clear it.

You can still find my pictures in my portfolio or tumblr. But I'll put my whole dA on hiatus until I'm ready and free to create for myself again. I'm planning to finish my current jobs until the start of July, so it's not that long from now. Either way... I still don't know if I bring the old deviations back. I'm kind of sick of looking at them when I'm not able to draw in my style and improve. Bleh.

Thank you for still being with me, sweeties. bee... wtf? by bojis

Reason of my absence~~

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 23, 2013, 6:20 AM

Hey guys :meow: You probably noticed that I've been very quiet for a while... a few months even. That's surely some time, so I better give you some explanation. Mini Embarrassed

I didn't stop drawing or painting, so no worries. That's my everyday's job, but I don't feel like showing everything and can't show many things yet either. I just... stopped doing art for myself. Not permanently, of course, but I really needed to fill my free time with something different than my job .-. So I'm reading more books, playing more games and... I came back to my old hobby which is writing. :dummy: I'm creating a fantasy love story for teenagers and it already has gained a lot of readers, but for now I'm doing this anonymously, so don't ask me for link. :P (and it's in Polish anyway) But I'll surely make a picture or two and then obviously show it to you.

However, I don't have much time for that either, due to maaaany personal events going on around me. I'll just say that in a few months I'll be living in a totally new place. ^^ I'm extremely excited, but there's a lot of to manage (including renovation, all the paperwork etc), so it takes away my time too. :<

Anyways! I'm totally alive and will continue posting on dA, I'm just not sure when and how often. I'm starting to miss doodling for myself, so probably very soon. xD

Thank you for your patience bee... wtf?

HIATUS. Farewell!

Journal Entry: Sun May 26, 2013, 8:12 AM

I'M TAKING COMMISSIONS! [link] ~~

Hello everyone!

For the last months I've been struggling inside my head with my art, my 'style', my inspirations and improvement. I slowly started noticing mistakes in my approaches, and my failures at choosing directions to move forward. I feel that I've been stuck in one place for far too long and if I don't act drastically, I won't go any further. I need to get out of my comfort zone. I need to cut myself off everything that has influenced my art so far. I need to reset and start anew.

That's why I've come to a decision to go on art community hiatus. A long one. That's at least what I plan. A few months maybe? We'll see. I still need to focus on my main art jobs, so I don't have much spare time left for practice and experiments. So it really can take a while.
There will be no updates, no sketches, no wips, no journals. Nothing until I feel like posting art again.

I'll still be doing commissions though. That's one thing you can be sure of!

I'm not a very active user, so many people won't notice my disapperance anyway. But once I come back, it will be big. Oh, I assure you.

Thank you for your time and see you someday later! If you want to contact me, feel free to attack my mail: daria @ anako . pl ^^

My Cintiq 13HD review with Questions and Answers

Journal Entry: Fri May 3, 2013, 11:18 AM

I'M TAKING COMMISSIONS! [link] ~~

It's been almost 4 years! Since I've just upgraded to 27QHD, I decided to write a full summary review of  Wacom's Cintiq 13HD. :w00t: HEAD OVER HERE TO READ IT!

LINK

OLD REVIEW:

:iconexcitedplz:
Hello everybody!! Guess what!! I got myself a Wacom Cintiq 13HD! :la: A screen graphic tablet! After many years of waiting for a miracle, Wacom have released a model that's actually affordable! Now let's only hope that this life-investment will pay off soon... :lol:

REVIEW TIME

I decided to write a few words about this newest marvel of graphic tablets. Is it worth the money? Does it improve digital drawing? Let's find out.
Note: if there's anything you wish to know that I didn't cover, just ask!

1. HOW DOES IT LOOK?

I love Cintiq 13HD's design. Simple and pretty, definitely gives you a high quality feeling. I upgraded from old Intuos3 so there's no surprise that I'm enchanted by its looks. It resembles a bit Intuos5 I suppose, and is almost as thin. The new pen looks fancy. It has four rings in different colors to choose from, so that you can, um, "customize it". A bit useless but cool. Other than that, it's a regular Wacom pen, though a bit lighter than in previous tablets. Now the stand. It looks very... plastic and cheap - but *fortunately* you don't get to look at it much. It has three levels of support and feels rather stable, so I have nothing to complain about.

2. IS IT PORTABLE?

It's very light and handy, and doesn't have many cables with it - so it does seem very portable, given that you buy a proper bag. I'm not sure if Wacom's bags for Intuos series are compatible, but it looks like so.

3. WHAT ABOUT THE CABLES?

There's one cable with three ends (usb, hdmi and power supply) plus a surprisingly small and light power brick (or shall I say: 'bricky'). They don't provide any adapter within, so before making the purchase make sure that your graphic card has a HDMI port - or simply buy the adapter yourself, they're rather cheap. I decided to buy the most simple graphic card with full hdmi port, so that I was sure it would work with no problems!

4. SO... DOES IT WORK WITH NO PROBLEMS?

Almost. You just install the drivers, plug it in, turn on the button and ta-daaah! It's detected as another monitor. I also had to flip the screen vertically in the Windows settings because I'm left-handed, so remember about it and don't panic if everything suddenly becomes upside-down. :D After a quick calibration (which takes literally a few seconds) it's ready to use like a regular Wacom tablet (but with a screeeen! :dummy: )
I just noticed one issue - sometimes when you draw, a random stroke can appear with no sensitivity detected. It only happens once per tens of strokes, and I guess it's an easy fix with the next drivers update.

5. HOW IS THE SCREEN?

AWESOME. Very bright and sharp. You can customize its temperature and slightly adjust contrast and brightness, so that's very helpful if you want it to fit your other monitors. However, I noticed one thing - not sure whether it's good or bad, but definitely worth mentioning: no matter how you adjust the settings, the darks will always be brighter than on regular screens. It might help with painting dark pictures, but the result will look different on Cintiq and on other monitors. Something to get used to I guess.

6. ISN'T 13HD TOO SMALL?

Naah. Obviously it depends on your preferences, but as long as you hadn't used A3 or any bigger tablet before, the size won't bother you at all. The high resolution (1920x1080) can contain a lot of things on i. You only have to get used to the different size ratio between the monitors - something that seems small on Cintiq 13HD will in fact be much bigger on 21' monitor and in the web. :P

7. WHAT ABOUT THE BUTTONS?

Wacom did a veeery weird thing removing all the touch strips from this series. So yeah, prepare for no finger smoothing to change your brush size or zoom in/out. Is it hard to get used to? A bit. I already had been used to using buttons for everything, since touch strips on my Intuos3 broke long time ago. So don't be discouraged, just give it some time. There are nine buttons in total: four regular, and five within a "rocker ring". But there's also a radial menu included, so you can program the infinite amount of shortcuts if you prefer. Again, something to get used to! ;)

8. OK, NOW THE IMPORTANT PART - HOW DO DRAWING AND PAINTING FEEL?

Fantastic. 8D I won't be original by saying that it literally feels as if you were drawing on paper - but hell IT DOES. Especially in Paint Tool SAI. I suddenly realised how long I hadn't drawn this way, because it feels sooo natural and awesome! Does it fasten my workflow? Well, definitely in drawing. I haven't painted for long enough yet, because I'm currently overwhelmed with drawing-only commissions. I just started a little portrait and I admit it was hard at first. I'm very used to my old settings and my old pen 'feel', so it will probably take me a while until I'm able to paint in the pace I did before. One finished picture should be enough!

9. IS THE GAP BETWEEN THE PEN AND ACTUAL CURSOR VERY HUGE?

I had my biggest concerns over this matter, but once you calibrate it - in fact, you'll probably do it a few times - it becomes imperceptible. It goes a few milimeters off towards the edges, but nowhere far. From what I remember when I was testing Cintiq 21UX, they improved the technology A LOT.

10. DOES IT GET VERY HOT?

I heard there were some heat issues with old Cintiqs, but don't worry - I had 13HD turned on for the whole day and it just got warm. Later I opened the window, and in a few seconds it became cold. So there's no way it will become too hot. ^^

11. IS IT EASY KEEP IT CLEAN?

I'm extremely cautious with keeping pricey things as good as new, but so far the Cintiq looks as if just taken out from the box. They give you a small cloth to keep the screen tidy, but honestly, I would expect at least a screen cover with such a tablet and price! :doh: So I took one of my old scarves with a smooth surface and now use is as a protector. It covers the whole screen with a few layers and works perfectly! xD

12. IS IT REALLY WORH THE PRICE?

Well - of course it *could* be a bit cheaper, but hey, it's still FOUR TIMES (yikes!) less than for 24HD. O_o If you're a professional or pro-wannabe artist who thinks it's high time to upgrade from your regular graphic tablet - don't hesitate much. It will make your workflow a pure pleasure (once you get used to the new buttons and looking directly at the screen xD) and motivate you draw even more! at least that's what it did to me.
For now, I'm definitely 100% happy with the purchase.

SUMMARY

Pros:
:bulletred: very nice design
:bulletred: just a few cables & easy to install
:bulletred: awesome screen quality
:bulletred: radial menu
:bulletred: DRAWING DIRECTLY ON THE SCREEN :la:

Cons:
:bulletred: no touch strips
:bulletred: no protecting cover included
:bulletred: can take some time until you get used to it
:bulletred: minor drivers issue (to be fixed soon, I suppose)

That's all for now! I hope you enjoyed this review and will find it helpful if you hesitate whether to buy it or not. :meow:

Wow! I'm truly overwhelmed by the feedback I got on this journal! Thank you so much, my dear watchers!! You're AWESOME. You have no idea how helpful your comments were, and how much warmth I felt inside while reading them. :love: Before this journal I had been too afraid of the reception of my art to try out different things. Now I think I'm ready. But gradually. I will still be drawing "my" things, don't worry. ;p

(end of edit)

~~~~
OK guys! Time for some changes. Yeah, I know that my gallery has *always* been a total mishmash when it comes to styles, but I also drew and painted focusing too much on how my pictures would be received. Because of that many ideas or sketches went to trash with thoughts that "they would not suit my gallery".
But recently I've noticed that I stopped caring about it.
I'm currently during that phase of life when I'm occupied with so many commercial projects that I hardly find time for drawing for myself. And when I do, I really want to create what I *want* to create in that peculiar moment, to try totally new subjects and just see how I execute them. That's why, just out of curiosity and as form of a warning, I'm asking you, my dear watchers, a question. And please answer honestly.
:bulletred: How would you react if I started submitting things totally out of my style, like unfinished comic-style doodles, kawaii/manga/anime pictures, anthro, pin-ups or erotica (not only straight!!), mixed media experiments, landscapes with no purpose, etc? :bulletred:
Would you unwatch me? would you think negatively about me (like: "what a weirdo, I hate anthro/manga/slash, I'm loosing all respect!")? And would you indeed prefer my gallery to be coherent in style?
Thank you in advance for answers, I highly appreciate any feedback! :heart:
