Us & Them Stories!!

I'm proud to announce that I have just launched a cat comic blog I always wanted! Who knows, if I had done this years ago, I could have been as famous as Simon Tofield by now. The stories are based on our happy family life with two cats. 'Like' my blog on Facebook if you enjoy it! Us And Them on FB

OK! It took me, I believe, almost 3 years to come to this place. First painting (Ami) was submitted in January 2009. So many things happened inbetween. Ooh well, at least I'm finishing it. Which is what I can't say about the 100 challenge. Next (last? lol) one in line is Ninquefind'ell. Still no idea what to do with her. The character is very strong, very well thought through. I'd hate to spoil it. I threw out the pathetic acrylic attempt, will go with watercolours.

About: QUALITY

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 27, 2011, 2:23 PM
I've been preparing this entry for quite some time now, so just bear with me, ok? Someone has to step up and say this. People! For the love of Flying Spaghetti Monster, PLEASE read this and think about it.

As an artist-wannabe of some sort, I'm currently devwatching quite a few art groups, painters, watercolorists, etc. The groups make me happy, I'm seeing so much good stuff thanks to them. What worries me here is that people stopped caring about the quality of files they submit into traditional art gallery (not going into photos right now, not my place to do this). I see so many fantastic works I would really love to +fav, but the quality is so crappy I'm not even fullviewing them. Let me remind you that this is an ART SITE, and when you're submitting here you should make sure that the file is of the best quality possible.

:bulletgreen: Item 1 - photos.

Many of you submit snapshots of your works taken with compact cameras. Some of you try very hard to minimize the crappy effect with PS filters, the rest just doesn't care. BIG MISTAKE. The darker corners, or unequal lightning on the sheet make me wanna vom. This is what you are showing to other members of the art community. Your works MUST be scanned!!! "But I don't have a scanner", lol, buy one, you do want to be an artist, don't you? Make your mum, dad, bf get you one as a present. Now the thing about scanners - they really don't have to be expensive. You don't need it to scan photo plates, films, whatever in super-high resolution. So unless you do need those features, the scanner should be as cheap as possible.

The below highly advanced piece of machinery is my Mustek 1248UB. This crap scanner is so old you can't even get drivers for Windows past XP (?), 2000 (?), I don't remember. It's only my luck that those do work on my current OS, cause I don't know what would I've done without them. This is actually my second Mustek 1248UB scanner. The first one was given to me on my 20-something bday, and served me well a couple of years. I was so in love with it, that when it finally broke, I traced down another one, and bought it. This piece of junk here cost me 110 PLN, which is about: 32 USD, 24 EUR, 21 GBP. That's not much, right? Here's what it looks like:

I have never used resolution past 600 dpi to scan my works. Actually I think that's the highest optical resolution I can get on my Mustek, the higher values are interpolated (make sure you check those values before you buy anything, interpolated resolution doesn't really matter, but looks great in advertisements!). The 600 dpi gives you a file the size about 7000 x 5100 pix form a single A4 sheet. It's more than enough, even for prints.

My friend from work kept asking me questions what scanner to buy for his daughter. But since he's a photographer, he invested in a super-expensive machine to scan plates as well. This scanner has a major disadvanantage comparing to mine - it tries very hard to flatten the structure of watercolour paper. We tried several settings, but the effect was always more or less the same, never even close to what my scanner does. Please have a look at some of the examples:

Scanner Comparison 1 by anachsunamon Scanner Comparison 2 by anachsunamon Scanner Comparison 3 by anachsunamon Scanner Comparison 4 by anachsunamon

Now the first one I'd say is very good. This is because my Mustek doesn't do well with orange tones, it tends to see them much more red than they actually are. However the rest is very much in favour of the Mustek scanner. Especially the last one, which scanned in a print shop was a complete failure - it looks nothing like the original! None of them do! The colours are so different, the scanned images are oversaturated, it all looks really terrible. This is also the reason I disabled some of my prints a while ago - must rescan and correct the files.

Remember, unless you're snowmask or zancan or agnes-cecile, and can provide THAT GOOD quality photos of your artwork, you should not be posting here at all until you get a scanner.

:bulletgreen: Item 2 - scans.

OK, now that we're past that long prologue, let's all assume we have our scanners and move on to the next stage - how to scan. LOL, as stupid as it seems, I do have things to say here. First of all, the scans should reflect reality. So not oversaturated, reaching all the subtle tones, etc. I am aware that the scan will never look as good as origininal, but it should be as close as possible, ok? Even if it means a delicate touch-ups in PS afterwards. My black is never really BLACK, so levels correction is a must.

Second of all, ensure the resized image is sharp, by using the standard sharpening filter, or unsharp mask, which proves to be better in some cases. If the picture is black&white, like pencil or ink, make sure you at least desaturate, else you'll leave a colour pixels the size of a fist flying around, spoiling all the fun. This is something that levune told me once about my gelpen drawings, very, VERY long time ago, but I was too stupid and stubborn to listen. DON'T BE STUPID AND STUBBORN!

The standard paper sizes I use are 30x40 cm and 18x32 cm, which require scanning in 2 parts, and 34x46 cm (larger watercolours) & 37x49 cm (pastels), which must be scanned in 4 parts. So don't even start with "it's too big to scan". unless it's bigger than 37x49 cm, or an oil paiting or canvas, your argument is pointless. I used to combine them in MS Paint, so you don't really need a licensed Photoshop to do it. And I managed to scan my paintings on canvas as well, lol. Just scan them in parts and put them together in any graphic program you use, cutting the blurry parts away of course.

Thank you all for making it to the end. I know I won't start a revolution, but from now I shall leave a comment under every artwork that I like, but the quality of the file is, well, shit, and not good enough for a fav.
Remember, the quality of files is very important and it speaks of you.

PS. I used  a lot "PS/Photoshop", but what I mean is actually any graphic software offering these simple enhancements.

About: Male stock/body ref.

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 14, 2011, 2:38 PM
This is something very unusual. I would like to share my opinion regarding human body refference, and male body to be exact. To the people that have been watching me for all these years it's rather obvious that without good stock photos I'm nothing. This happens to artist-hobbyists, who don't have the opportunity to work with live models in their studies. This is not my profession, this is just a hobby. The art classes I took as a child were nowhere near live models, just broken bottles/rotten fruit still life compositions. This is why I constantly browse deviantART for best stock accounts. Throughout the years I've found many, that I'd like to present to you later in this entry. But now that I look at it I noticed one thing - most of those are female stocks. Looking at my gallery again I see that in most of my pictures the 'human element' is always female. It got me thinking.

Why do I only draw female characters? The answer struck me today while browsing male stock photos. I just don't like the look of male body, or the photos I see. I know! Terrible! Not sure if the photos here are at any fault, but it's very hard for me to find any beauty in male bodies. All the above probably disqualifies my as an artist, but everybody is entitled to an opinion, and this is mine. I acknowledged my flaw. Not sure yet how should I work on it, or even if I want to.

But then I remembered all the mangas I've read back in the days. I did enjoy seeing male bodies there, especially Tenjou Tenge, NANA, you know, the sexy, muscular but not extremely muscular, proper men, not the cute yaoi crap. The stuff that sareph would provide, if he had a stock account (oh! Kaw! There's an idea for ya!). If you know what I mean, and happen to know a stock account like that, I'd be very, very grateful if you could share it here with everyone.

To be fair, I'm posting a couple of good stock accounts. These are just few of the ones I use:

Female stock accounts:

:bulletgreen: Lisajen-stock
:bulletgreen: Sinned-angel-stock
:bulletgreen: Dingelientje-stock
:bulletgreen: mizzd-stock

Mixed stock accounts:

:bulletgreen: mjranum-stock
:bulletgreen: b-e-c-k-y-stock
:bulletgreen: lindowyn-stock
:bulletgreen: LinzStock (Sexy males here!! This is what I'm looking for!)

Children stock account:

:bulletgreen: deathbycanon-stock

Male stock accounts:

:bulletgreen: justmeina

Please let me know what you think and share your valuable knowledge!
Thanks!

Artistic depression/desire

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 16, 2011, 2:05 PM
Ok, first things first - I wish one day to become an illustrator. Books for kids mostly, postcards maybe. Not saying "starting right now", but maybe in the future. Anyone here having an idea how to approach that? Would be happy for any advise, tips, guidelines you can think of.

I am proud to announce that artistically I have done literally NOTHING over the past year (prob not a good confession in the face of what I've said above, lol). Yay me! 2-3 paintings don't really count as an artistic progress, lol. Am in an artistic depression apparently. Getting out of it is my deepest desire. Like someone said to me lately, "seems like u'r having a fun and loud life". And I really do, lol. It's enjoyable and addictive.

Ahh well, stagnation or not, I have no intention in deleting or abandoning my dA account. Lol, I would never! It's alive pretty much on it's own. Cuddles to each and every single one of 258 people who've added my works to their favs over the past months, despite my stubborn lack of replies & thanks. Also, WELCOME to my 45 new watchers. Hope you'll enjoy your stay. Just don't expect much, lol. I'd normally say that I'm trying my best, but I'm not a liar :D Busy sorting out my flat at the moment, not that anyone cares. Ooh well ;]

Snow News!

As most of you (hopefully) know, Poland is one of those "snowy" countries in central Europe. We get snowed in regularly, so it's not a very big surprise. First days are always the hardest, then everything gets back to normal and we're just chugging along like nothing happened. Surprisingly, the snow is almost all gone now. I'm posting a photo below to show you how it looked not more than 3 weeks ago.

Snowy Poland, lol

Cheers from (not so snowy anymore) Poland! :D

Ludki moje kochane!

Dwa tygodnie temu dotarła do mnie druga książka tejże Pani, i muszę przyznać iż chłonę ją niczym gąbka wodę.

hmm... I'm scared! LOL

I just bought tickets for flight to London in September lol. It came out of blue, the secret meeting HAHA no ways... still can't believe what I'm doing... Well it's about time for me, right? And loosing some badly placed bets seems like a perfect opportunity.

40 k ??!

Thank you so much for 40000 page views! I don't really give a damn about them, what really makes me happy is the fact that they keep on growing without me being around much! THANKS!

I've just deleted 146 Activity Message Stacks, that was like ~800 Activity Messages. I have literally only comments now to deal with. I actioned 328 emails today at work, I really have not enough strenght to thank everyone for favs. Especially when the oldest reach so far in the past people keep asking me what was the fav, cause they can't remember being anywhere near my gallery.

There is a slight movement taking place in my life. Good, cause I've been artistically dry and dying of boredom. I guess I really am an adrenaline/curiousity whore after all. I've learnt to enjoy the hell out of life. And I wish you all the same.

The Sin

I've finally been forced to create a facebook profile. That's right, I can now be found on facebook.com.

Not that it matters, but I'm updating my prints with larger files, more sizes and products. A lot of things have changed in the print program since I last played with it. The recently sold print (with the ENORMOUS profit of 1$ xD) reminded me of the mess I have in my store. Whoever it was that bought it - thank you.

The Break Down

Durring my unexpectedly extended vacation in Egypt I managed to break my back again by reaching my legs in the shower. Everything else went smoothly: jumping of the boat to the Red Sea, jumping of the rocks to the pool, riding and falling of the camel, riding on quads, riding in a jeep in an embrional position... none of this messed me up as bad as bending in the shower.

I can't sit too long at my desk, so I just tell you one thing: it was all worth it :D

The Nasty Stuff

My personal health problems vol. 2.
(yes, after over 4 months of absence on dA)

Today, somewhere around 1 pm my armpit started to hurt a little. Naturally, I ignored the thing. But the pain was getting worse every hour. Around 4 pm I locked myself in the WC and felt around the armpit. I noticed a small thickening, which later turned into a nice, large bump. I stormed the clinique in search for help - luckily, one of the doctors was kind enough to check the alien lifeform under my arm asap. It turnet out to be an infection in the deeper layers of my skin.

And now I have a skin infection.
I'm flying to Egypt on Saturday with a skin infection.
Well that's just brilliant.

He'd forbidden me to use any cosmetics, around my both armpits (LOL), and he'd also forbidden me to... remove my armpit hair! Now that is just crazy talking!! I certainly won't let that happen - two, three days AT MOST, that's all I can promise. Not even one day more. It's hard enough to walk around with the idea of being totally gross.

SomeThing Else

I got a job. Not that I lost the previous one, it's just that the project I am currently working with is comming to it's glorious end and I had to look for something else to do. I'm signing all the papers on friday, to make it official. My current, soon to be ex, boss does not look happy with the idea, but what can I do.

The last 4 months of my absence on dA I was... well... working, playing Diablo 2, working, leaving my subscription to expire, reading tones of books and dealing with personal stuff. My grandfather and grandmother died recently, I came across a lot of interresting things in their apartment: photos from my childhood, old photos of my relatives, grandpa's collection of war-related articles, and all the papers with photos of my father as a volleyball star. Can't decide which findings are more shocking than the others.

Ah, and I don't paint, at all.
I'll start again when I'm ready. And infection-free ;]

So, what happened the past few months?
What did I miss?

And so I'm half-disabled again

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 21, 2010, 1:29 PM
It came back this morning. I was crawling through the snow towards the car door, and when I finally reached them and rapidly placed my humble self inside, my well-known back pain just struck me without warning. I was getting more and more stiff durring the day, and so now, in the evening, I'm half disabled again. I can sit, but every movement is so frickin' painfull. I still have all some pills left from my last back-experience, so no need for a doctor this time. But I missed my dance class today and it makes me very unhapy (pretty much like the pain itself).

Well then, I'll be offline and away from my desk for a while, as usuall... No need to worry. The 353 messages in my box won't go away (that's another paifull fact that I have to acknowledge). Take care&wish me luck!

Sober New Year's Party

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 1, 2010, 6:17 AM
Drunk idiots with fireworks.

Simply out of boredom (and there was a hidden plan behing all this) after 10 PM we went totally sober to Warsaw's New Year's Party downtown. There were WILD CROWDS travelling towards the stage, like a big, wide river of people. Since I wanted to capture fireworks in the sky, we were pretty far away from the stage, like one block away (to those who know: przy rondzie Dmowskiego). I set up my tripod on a covered flowerbed, the safes place to be at that moment. Or at least I thought so.

The view was good, fireworks were everywhere. And I mean that literally. Some drunk dorks fired few rockets towards the crowd. A girl right next to me was hit right in her hand, she screamed, fell on the street and crushed her bottle of champagne. The next rocket hit right in the busstop, where older people and kids were hiding. The situation got pretty nasty. Like a fucking riot. Ambulances were forcing their way through the crowd, bringing out more and more injured teenagers. So Michal helped me pack my camera and tripod and we fleed as fast as we could. We were both stiff from the cold anyway.

All in all, the views were AMAZING. It's really one of the main reasons I go to new year's parties. I took some really good photos and I'm happy :aww: (full-view journal to enlarge)

No, not about Christmass... ,)

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 26, 2009, 3:22 PM
Day like everyday

I don't know feel the spirit anymore. I would gladly go to work on Christmass Eve, if my boss didn't force me to stay at home. Maybe I just don't enjoy such family events, and since I'm not a kid anymore there are no presenst there for me boohoooo. I'm actually more happy about the extra free time I get. And I managed to digg up some unfinished sketches. One of them is aready turned into a speedpainting anachsunamon.deviantart.com/ar… the other is (suprise!) Diablo II's Sorceress fanart. This does not match the 100 Challenge at all, but it's a good sketch. I'll work on it later.

In the meantime I gained a little more respect for Lady Gaga's music, since I heard her singing live (not live-live, just youtube-live, but still...). She's got such a powerful voice, I have a thing for those. It's pretty much the same as when I fell in love with Aguilera's voice, when she released her second album (not the silly pop-crap she started her career with). I consider myself a very flexible person, listening to all sorts of music, so say all you want. Freddie is still my greatest love

This in fact is just an excuse to change the CSS I was getting tired of.
Thanks for visiting anyways! :w00t:

My sister-in-law will be giving birth to baby Julia in April, so I have about 4 months to fill all the walls in child's room with lovely illustrations. I got the permission to use as many cats and pink princesses as I want. This kinda ruins my perfect schedule though. The plan was to make one Art Dare related picture, and one not related, but all in 100 challenge items. Next in line is Juno/Celles, and the 100 challenge list item for them will be "Connected". I can't find the desired stock though, not like there are no plans on completing the Art Dare. Cause there are. Still no idea what do do with Ninquefind'ell though. I threw away the started acrylic painting, it was just AWFUL bleh. All suggestions are welcome.

Kaczorowski, you stinking stick!!

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 30, 2009, 4:16 PM
People are dicks. I'm starting to believe there's not one thing in this stupid country that you can achieve without bribing or blackmailing someone. Even the smallest things are one huge trial of one's character. I've lost the track of how many times I had to be a real bitch to get what I wanted, even the honest way, when I simply paid for the service.

For over two years I'm trying to get one (ONE) valve fixed. None of the combinations of my furniture in this small room includes placing the bed somewhere else than in close proximity to the window and - of course - our beloved radiator. And I must say, this fucking fing goes crazy in the heating period. So here's the thing: it's impossible to turn it off, because the valve starts leaking immediately due to high pressure. So the damn thing is boiling hot 24/7. It's ok durring the day, but try sleeping next to this shit! I'm changing T-shirts at night, waking up all sweaty and wet. My hair is ruined and I need a bath, I wake up exhausted every day. And I have to be at work around 8 am. An opened window is not an option. We get hot from the heater, and breathe in freezing air, my throat is constantly sick because of that. #$%&*!!!

And here's the best thing: the claim with the owner's signature was submited to the building's administration TWO YEARS AGO! Since then we tried fucking everything to get this fixed durring summer. TWO summers, to be exact. Everytime it's the same thing: one person to another. One needs the approval of another, one has no time, one is busy, one doesn't feel like the right person to approve such proposal... ARRRGHHHH!!! I know exactly what this is: one is simply expecting to get paid extra, when it's his fucking job to administrate the building. We've been sent away few times in a row in September, the last month before the heating period. The response was "don't worry, the heating period will not be a problem". Well guess what! It actually is! They told us, again, to suck it and wait through another winter. Imagine, we even wanted to pay for everything they wanted. But none will say it out loud they expect a bribe for moving their asses and making one call.

That's Poland for you.

Mordimer WIP

I promised myself I won't do it, but I just can't help it xD Here's the latest work in progress photo of the painting I'm currently working on, Mordimer and his Angel:

WIP

Lately I've been under HUGE influence of "Dreamscapes", a book full of fantastic tutorials and walthroughs by our puimun, that's why I can't stop making those tiny details on the trees, It's like an addiction of some kind.

I know the Angel is a little inconsistent with the description in the book, but as far as I remember he also appeared as a hooded, dark character, much like the Dark Traveller from Diablo games. Mordimer is just another story, I don't think there even is a detailed enough description of his looks in all 5 books. I always imagined him as an Aragorn-type. This one here will be a little more elegant, cause that's the only stock I could find, matches my needs at least partially. Well I hope you'll like the finished piece, it should be up in a week!

ME Stuff

:bulletblue: I've discovered another well hidden hobby of mine - DANCING! I've starded practicing latino dances and I LOVE IT! I can't believe I never thought about this before.

:bulletblue: Last Friday night I came up with a crazy idea and changed the graphics in the layout of my gallery. Hell, a woman needs changes sometimes. I like this one better, until of course I come up with a new crazy idea.

OK, enough xD
Have a nice day everyone!!

I want to be like Peggy Bundy (UPDATE)

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 2, 2009, 1:46 PM
!UPDATE!

OMG OMG OMG! They let me go! I'm going on vacation! OMG!!! My crying from being tired and overworked has finally effected in 15 (!) days of vacation! Woohoooo! Packed my stuff and off I go to the sea :D See you in a week! ...maybe :XD: Woohooo!

:iconheheplz:

I Feel so dead

It happened this evening. I was sitting in the bathtub, taking a long, warm bath, when suddenly I realised I was constantly thinking of work. What I did, what I forgot to do, what was I going to do first thing in the morning. OMG! It's like I didn't have a life anymore. I feel so fuckin' tired. And overworked. Do you even remember me painting lately? Cause I sure don't.

Buuuhuhu I want to be like Peggy Bundy :'(

I even started drinking coffee in the morning. I mean, what the hell, I fuckin' hate coffee. I want to take a good night sleep. Or a long vacation. To Canary Island or something like that. Jamaica would be fine. And I want more time for myself. The school is over and I don't feel like I have more time now. It's almost like there was an invisible time-sucking-black-hole following me. I'd also like to finish the art dare thing. I feel so empty, I can't even finish the stupid 5 pictures, not to mention the 100 challenge. I'm just so numb when I get of work. Where's the fuckin' joy in that.

Well girl, you just can't have it all...

So forgive me for those 329 unanswered messages, waiting in my box. I really don't have the strenght to worry about those as well. I do appreciate the support though :D

Why do the sexiest always have to die?

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 28, 2009, 9:24 AM
DO NOT READ!

*** The High Lord SPOILER ALERT ***

I'm gonna cry out my frustration after finishing Trudi Canavan's "The Black Magician Trilogy". So all of you who intend to read it the nearest future, or haven't finished yet, go away and do not read. I'm serious.

Why do the sexiest, most mysterious badass guys always have to die? WHY, I'M ASKING YOU?! It's just so fuckin' sad. You read three fuckin' BRICKS of books, ~700 pages each, and you really come to like this "big bad black magician", as introduced from the very beginning. Then you start wondering how much of that "bad" stuff is actually that bad and you notice you're starting to like this guy even long before it becomes obvious to the main female character. They go through a lot together, blah blah, the story goes on, and right after that, at the very end, he just DIES. On the last pages. Like he couldn't die on the fuckin' desert, or simply be killed on multiple occasions. He has to die at the very end, to screw everything up. Not like I'm a fan of sticky-sweet happy endings, no. The Witcher saga doesn't have a cheesy happy ending, and it's just fine, it's perfect, I might say. In this case I simply think this particular death was so fuckin' unnecesary to the whole story. Like the world wasn't shitty enough even without it (in real life, as well as in this book's reality). If Sawyer's killed at the end of LOST, I'm gonna stay in my dark place forever. Buuhuhuhu....

Ok, I'm calm now. Sorry for the general commotion and the amount of fucks used in this entry (like never before). I do think that Miss Canavan will never reach the level of Master Andrzej Sapkowski (for example), but I trully hope her every book will be beter than the previous one. They're so light and entertaining, and I couldn't stop reading! Right until the depressing death of the sexiest, most lovable character. It just doesn't fit the overall "lightness" of the story. Kill the stupid Harry Potter next time!

EOT

Personal Crap

:bulletblue: I'm being fired at the end of this month and here's a thought: looking for a new job really SUCKS these days. But no panic there yet (YET!). But there will be, I'm sure of that.

:bulletblue: My blood type is A Rh-, it's official. It's funny, cause until now I had no clue what type I was. Also: I have hypertension (it runs in my genes), my bloodwork is fine and all my internal organs are doing great. I saw my entrails and guts on screen, I had my checkup last saturday. USG is fun!

:bulletblue: I like to watch stuff while I'm painting, I like when there's something playing in the background. And so, while painting Phoenix, I've watched: last season of Family Guy (few times in a row actually), 7 parts of Eis Am Stiel, 2 seasons of 3rd Rock From The Sun. And I'm sure that's not all.

:bulletblue: There was no spring this year. Winter, lighter winter, and than BAM! All of the sudden, sunny and warm summer. I've already planted my seeds.

:bulletblue: The 100 challenge anachsunamon.deviantart.com/jo… is completed in 25%!!!
