My Weekend

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 22, 2018, 7:36 PM

So, a lot has been happening the last couple days, so I thought I'd share my experiences with the rest of you.

I finally started watching "Legend of the Three Caballeros," and it seems charming enough. I'll probably watch the rest of the season.

I saw what (SPOILER!!!) White Diamond looks like. Also, apparently "Steven Universe" is getting a movie. Not sure how i feel about that yet.

The "Invader Zim" movie, on the other hand, looks amazing. Not too surprised that they seem to be adapting the first graphic novel. I saw a lot of familiar scenes.

And finally, Butch Hartman has been busted for deliberately being vague about a streaming service he was going to indoctrinate children with, and people are having trouble getting refunds from his Kickstarter regarding the project. And he also made a joke about Mary Kay Bergman's suicide. The same guy who, in his most popular show alone, mind you: has made numerous potshots at Europe, constantly makes jokes about women being unbearable nags, has protagonists who often lapse into selfish or underhanded behavior, often tries to play child abuse for laughs, and basically voices an avatar of himself that is so into himself that he makes Invader Zim look like the most modest creatures on Earth.

I don't want to say that I saw all this coming from miles away, but...

In Defense of Steven Universe's Pacing

Journal Entry: Wed May 2, 2018, 10:19 PM

Okay, in light of the fact that at some point in the future we're going to get our handful of new Steven Universe episodes, I wanted to address something that I've seen slews of other people complaining about in regards to the show: the pacing.

I have seen so many complaints about how there are episodes that devote themselves to seemingly pointless things, while neglecting the things people really want to know about, namely about Rose Quartz and what happened to Pink Diamond. I've also seen complaints that Steven or other characters aren't behaving "correctly" in certain situations. I don't know if I can explain everything in a way that will satisfy everyone, but I'm at least going to put my two cents in.

First of all, what about the episodes that some see as "filler," or not important compared to what we really want to know? Well, try to take a look at it from this standpoint: even with all the fantasy elements of "Steven Universe," I believe that a big part of the show has always been that the characters tend to react realistically (or seemingly realistically) in response to the things happening around them. The show also doesn't shy away from aesops about how no, you can't save everyone, some people aren't able to change, and bad things can happen no matter what you do. But what happens when bad things happen? Life goes on. Even if people experience great tragedy in their lives, most of them do go back to some form of normalcy sooner or later. Yes, the Gems and Greg clearly miss Rose, but they haven't completely ceased functioning because of her "death," and they don't neglect Steven just because his "birth" meant Rose's "death."

And Steven hasn't come out of all this completely unscathed, either. Remember, Steven is (at most) only fourteen years old. If beings as powerful as the Crystal Gems can experience PTSD from the things they've faced and witnessed, imagine what that kind of thing does to a child's mind. Also, the complaints that Steven doesn't seem to fully understand how humans function? Uh...maybe that's because he was primarily raised by literal aliens for a good chunk of his life? Yes, Greg was there too, but mostly for Steven's early years before the Gems became his primary caretakers. Just the fact that the Gems communicate and interact with Greg is a huge step up from the first episode.

In short, the reason so many supposed "filler" episodes happen is because they need to happen, if only for Steven's sake. You can't think about something 24/7 and expect to come out completely sane. Even if Steven is half-Gem, he's still half-human too, and he needs to be able to live and behave like a normal human once in a while.

As for there being so many unknowns, and why Steven doesn't ask the Gems or Greg for more info? Because they hardly know anything either (or in Pearl's case, she literally seems unable to talk about certain subjects). As "Rose's Scabbard" and "Bismuth" showed, Rose Quartz was willing to keep secrets even from her most trusted comrades; if she did do something behind their backs, there's no way they're going to know about it. And even if Greg loved Rose dearly, there was still a lot he didn't know about her. And that's another way the show succeeds in being "realistic": nobody is perfect. Yes, the Gems came off as perfect at first because we were seeing them mainly through Steven and his childlike wonder. But, as time went on, Steven (and the audience) realized that even these seemingly invincible warriors had their own demons and flaws. You know, the way most people do?

Is "Steven Universe" a perfect show? No, of course not; honestly, I don't think such a thing exists. Any form of media is open to criticism, and people are entitled to express their own opinions. But it's another thing entirely when people start complaining about certain aspects that aren't "realistic" or "satisfying" while not taking the show's context into account.

Sorry if it seemed like I was rambling. I just wanted to get my two cents out there.

Dude, seriously?

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 6, 2017, 10:19 PM

I just saw the latest Philip DeFranco Show video, and when I saw that there was some controversy regarding Quantic Dream, I wasn't too surprised, but I was still curious. Well, apparently there are some people out there already up in arms about "Detroit: Become Human," because there's a sequence regarding a little girl being abused (and possibly killed) by her father. According to these detractors, this particular sequence will normalize abusive behavior toward children who play the game.

...

So, in other words, it's another case of people looking at one specific part of a video game without even bothering to understand the context. Even I can tell that the point of the sequence is that the abusive father is the bad guy. And, as DeFranco pointed out, violence against children is not anything new in other forms of media (case in point: "IT"), so the whole thing comes off as people once again assuming that only children play video games, despite it being proven that the average age of a gamer is early 30s.

Furthermore, this game is most likely rated M, so idealistically, children shouldn't be playing it in the first place. Yes, every parent is different, and it's their job to decide what is and isn't appropriate for their child. However, a good parent also understands not to just use the TV or games as a babysitter. I don't have kids, and I have no desire to have kids, and even I understand that.

Finally, there have been plenty of bigger problems with the games David Cage and his company have put out, but the guys on Two Best Friends Play are better at explaining that than I'll probably ever be. Being critical about how women are depicted in a company's games is one thing; condemning a game simply because it depicts a scene with content that nobody would bat an eye at if it was a TV show or a movie is quite another.

My opinion on the Strobelite video

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 7, 2017, 3:45 PM

Honestly...I don't hate this. Yeah, it's not a deep music video, but who says that's a bad thing? It's mostly about Noodle and 2D dancing...and they look happy. Considering everything these two in particular have gone through, seeing them able to just cut loose and have fun puts a big smile on my face.

As for complaints that this video doesn't "advance the band's lore"...well, neither do a lot of the other videos. None of Phase 1's videos were connected, except for Del appearing in two of them. The only Phase 2 video that had any kind of plot relevance was "El Manana," and that was the last video released that phase. Even Phase 3, which had somewhat of an overarching plot, didn't elaborate on much and just got complicated after a while.

And then, of course, there's the fact that Russel only appears for  about three seconds at the beginning of the video. Well, did it ever occur to anyone that maybe Russel doesn't do much in the videos because he doesn't want to? Think about it: Russel's never really had much of a presence in the other videos, and he's usually behind his drums. "Saturnz Barz" is probably the most Russel's actually done in a video, but all the band members had pretty much the same amount of focus in that one. Also, Russel in general just seems to be a more private person than the other members of the band, which is why we don't hear much from him aside from interviews. Yeah, maybe people wanted to see Russel dance, but that would have been wildly out-of-character for him.

If I were to guess, a lot of the band's money is probably being used for the TV show Jamie's working on (which I am super-pumped for, by the way). Plus, if Jamie and Damon want to somehow have both the live band and the characters onstage, there's got to be some expensive technology that's going into that.

The point is, I'm sure Damon and Jamie are trying their hardest to keep the fans happy, but they're not going to be perfect. Frankly, we should be thankful we're getting new Gorillaz material at all, considering that break Jamie and Damon took from each other. Sometimes a music video about dancing in a nightclub is just that; can't we just have fun with it?

On a final note, I did like the cameos throughout the video, especially Phil Cornwell. I think it's hilariously meta that Murdoc interacts with his own voice actor.

Making Someone's Day

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 20, 2017, 3:30 PM

So I was just searching "Gorillaz" on Tumblr this morning, and I came across this post:
sean-the-pawn.tumblr.com/post/…

I can't help but smile at this because I was the one who added that to Gorillaz's "Crowning Moment of Heartwarming" section on TV Tropes. And knowing I made someone else's day makes my day.

My Theories about Pink Diamond as of Wanted

Journal Entry: Mon May 29, 2017, 5:34 PM

Bullet; Purple Yellow Diamond actually shattered her, which explains why she's so adamant about forgetting her.
Bullet; Purple Blue Diamond shattered her, and is a really good actress; she insisted that she saw Pink get shattered by a sword.
Bullet; Purple White Diamond either did it, or ordered Yellow/Blue to do it, and is either blackmailing or threatening Yellow/Blue into compliance.
Bullet; Purple Pink Diamond knew of Rose Quartz's attack, but accepted it as a sort of "suicide by cop" situation.
Bullet; Purple Pink Diamond conspired with Rose Quartz to disappear, and she's hidden somewhere. Alternatively, Rose somehow "reincarnated" Pink as Steven.

In any case, this changes everything. Turns out it isn't quite as simple as  "Rose Quartz shattered Pink Diamond." I think it's clear at this point that somebody's lying.

Who's lying and why, we're not sure yet. All I know is there'd better be another Summer of Steven coming our way.

Latest Tag Session

Journal Entry: Fri May 26, 2017, 9:13 PM

I got tagged by :iconthecynisterone:. Let's do this.

  1. Which piece of media do you think should be adapted into a musical?
Hmm...does "Steven Universe" count? I know there's plenty of songs in the show already, but I bet they could do something similar to the Sailor Moon "Sera Myu" shows.
  2. What's your favorite album of the 2010's so far?
Humanz, just because I'm so happy that Gorillaz is back.
  3. Who's a comedic actor who you feel like deserves to be in more dramatic roles?
I'm not sure I can answer this one, since I really don't have any favorite actors or actresses.
  4. Which kids show do you think should get "Space Ghost Treatment" (aka, be made for adults)?
I do think a "Scooby Doo" series aimed more toward adults could work if the story was good and the characters weren't flanderized. Yeah, they tried to do it with "Mystery Incorporated," and I do think it had potential; however, there were a few glaring flaws in that show that were hard to ignore.
  5. Do you think that a channel that airs kids shows and adult shows without separate time slots could work?
No, in a sense that there are parents out there that just want to use the TV as a babysitter, and not monitor what their kids watch. Yeah, kids aren't completely stupid, but there would need to be some kind of parental involvement.
  6. Do you think there should be more dramatic adult animated shows?
If they're good, heck yes! If "BoJack Horseman" taught us anything, it's that being animated doesn't take anything away from the story it tells. Plus, if there were good animated shows out there for adults, maybe there wouldn't be such a stigma regarding cartoons and how they're supposedly only "for kids."
  7. Which actor or actress do you think has the sexiest voice?
I will admit, I have a fondness for Richard Greico's voice, especially when he's voicing Ghost Rider. When I first heard him in an "Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3" trailer...mmm... Love
  8. Who's your favorite Batman (doesn't matter if it's animated or live-action)?
Probably the Animated Series version, since it was the setup for the "Arkham" and "Injustice" series. Let's face it: no matter what Kevin Conroy does, he's always going to be known as Batman.
  9. Who would win in a fight: Samurai Jack or Rick Sanchez?
Samurai Jack. Rick probably wouldn't be afraid to cheat, but he'd probably also pass out in a drunken stupor halfway through the fight.
  10. Is Yondu Mary Poppins?
:| (Blank Stare)...I don't know who that is.
  11. Do you think Adult Swim should be its own separate channel?
If it showed some of the older shows, like "Home Movies" and "God, The Devil, and Bob," it could work. Unfortunately, that would also mean they'd probably air the awful duds too (*cough*Mr.Pickles*cough*).

Guess who's got a new obsession~?

Journal Entry: Sun May 21, 2017, 8:43 PM

So...this is what happens when you make a show with Murdoc Niccals, Bucky McBadbat from "The Fairly OddParents," Sierra from "Total Drama," and a giant Care Bear with Markiplier's voice (seriously, that's him voicing the bear).

But in all earnestness, I'm going to have to draw Black Hat sooner or later. If they were to make this an actual show (and in English, I guess), I'd definitely watch it.

So let me get this straight...

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 4, 2016, 7:52 AM
When Justin Timberlake performs with Chris Stapleton on the Country Music Awards, nobody bats an eye.

Yet, when Beyonce performs with the Dixie Chicks at the very same awards show, there's suddenly a huge outcry because Beyonce isn't a country artist, and the Dixie Chicks are supposedly "un-American" and pretty much got blacklisted because they had the nerve to criticize George W. Bush.

Facepalm

I'm not a fan of country music or Beyonce, but even I can't ignore the complete lack of any sort of logic in this situation.

I just realized...today marks the 10th anniversary of when I first posted "Ed Edd n Eddy's Nightmare Before Christmas" on Fanfiction.net. Wow...

Of course I wouldn't realize it until there's a few hours left in the day... O_o

Why I can't get behind The Loud House

Wed May 18, 2016, 10:07 PM

It seems like everyone's talking about this show, so I might as well put my proverbial two cents in.

I did manage to watch the first two episodes, and I want to make something clear: overall, this is not a bad show. Compared to some of the complete and utter duds that have been on Nickelodeon in recent years (except for Harvey Beaks), "The Loud House" is a structurally sound show. At the very least, the show contains actual plots and each character is distinguishable. That's more than can be said for some of Nick's more recent repertoire (*coughSpongeBobcough*). So why exactly can I not enjoy this show?

To put it simply...bias. Pure, unadulterated bias.

As far back as I can remember, loud noises have been the bane of my existence. I have to cover my ears around fire alarms, latex balloons make me nervous (when I was younger, I had one pop in my face), and even large crowds can be mentally and emotionally exhausting to me.

So when I see a show about a child who has to live in a house with ten siblings, I don't find that charming or funny. I find it almost...nightmarish. I mean, just think about it for a second: being constantly surrounded by people, countless arguments, having little to no privacy, even in your own home.  As someone who finds social situations draining, and requiring at least some peace and quiet most days, the whole setting of this show just makes me squirm uncomfortably in my seat.

Does this mean "The Loud House" is a bad show? No, especially compared to more dud Nicktoons like "Breadwinners" or "Fanboy and Chum-Chum."  Just don't expect me to be watching it again anytime soon.

Addendum: The other main problem I have with this show is that seeing those eleven kids just makes me think about how many times the parents have had sex. I'd rather not have that in my head, thank you very much.
