This is something I decided to throw together real quick based on something I've been thinking about for a while. In this Double Toasted video (Link), Korey Koleman and the gang discuss the trailer for the upcoming movie Atomic Blonde, in which Charlize Theron plays a John Wick-esque action hero. They also discuss how some people are already criticizing the movie for being "unrealistic," as Theron is shown performing stunts such as fighting thugs and immediately getting back up after getting punched in the face...in other words, things that are commonplace in action movies starring men that nobody bats an eye at. I did find the subject an interesting observation, but it wasn't at the forefront of my mind after a while.

Then the Nintendo showcase at E3 2017 happened, and people collectively began losing their minds at the announcement of "Metroid Prime 4" and a remake of "Metroid 2: Return of Samus." And in my mind, I realized that Samus Aran could be considered a good comparison to Theron's character in Atomic Blonde. Think about it: Samus Aran is a woman in a role that, at the time of her first appearance, was mostly reserved for men--a no-nonsense, tough-as-nails space bounty hunter. And yet, I've never seen anyone describe Samus as being "unrealistic" because of what she can do and the things she can withstand; instead, she's one of Nintendo's most popular characters with plenty of fans.

In this 25-minute compilation of people reacting to the "Metroid Prime 4" news (Link), there are over 60 guys (and a few girls) erupting into cheers as soon as they catch sight of the logo, because they love Metroid, and they love Samus. They clearly want new Metroid games, and they want Samus to have the respect she deserves as a video game icon.

So really, is an action game about a female bounty hunter really that different from an action thriller starring a female version of John Wick?
