Description
Seraphine moved carefully through the ruins, her boots whispering against stone dust that had not been disturbed in centuries. Pale light spilled from the floating gem at the end of her wooden staff, illuminating fallen arches and walls etched with sigils softened by time. The glow was gentle rather than harsh, as if it respected the silence of the place. Her hooded white robe brushed her shoulders, the fabric marked only by travel and a single blue brooch fastened at her collar, its enamel catching the light like a fragment of sky.
The ruins rose around her like the ribs of some enormous, ancient creature. Columns leaned at tired angles, and ceilings had collapsed to reveal slivers of gray afternoon sky. Vines crept through fractures in the stone, and small white flowers had claimed the edges of broken steps. Magic lingered here, not loud or dangerous, but patient. Seraphine could feel it humming faintly, like a memory that refused to fade.
She paused at the threshold of what must once have been a grand hall. Her eyes traced the curve of a shattered mural on the far wall. It depicted robed figures standing in a circle, their hands raised toward a starburst symbol that had been scratched nearly away. White mages, she thought. Or perhaps something older, before such distinctions had names.
She lifted her staff slightly, guiding the floating gem forward. Light spread across the floor, revealing patterns inlaid with silver that still gleamed beneath the dust. A ward, dormant but not dead. Seraphine murmured a quiet phrase, her voice barely more than breath, and the gem answered with a soft pulse. The ward sighed and settled, recognizing her intent and allowing her passage.
As she stepped inside, the air shifted. It grew cooler, heavier, as if the hall were holding its breath. Seraphine’s blonde hair slipped free from her hood as she tilted her head, listening, not with her ears alone, but with the sense she had trained since childhood. Magic echoed here in layers, the slow erosion of time, the residue of rituals long finished, and something else beneath it all. A question, perhaps. Or a waiting.
She moved deeper into the hall, passing stone benches and a collapsed dais. At its center stood a pedestal, intact despite everything else. Upon it rested a book bound in pale leather, uncracked, untouched by mold or dust. The sight of it made her still.
“Of course,” she murmured softly. “You survived.”
Approaching the pedestal, she felt the familiar, steady presence of her own magic align with the hall’s. White magic was not about force or command, it was about accord. She did not reach for the book immediately. Instead, she placed her staff against the stone wall and let the gem float higher, casting light upward to reveal the ceiling. There, carved into the stone, was the same starburst symbol from the mural, whole and sharp.
A memory stirred. A lesson from years ago, spoken by a teacher whose voice she could almost hear now, Ruins are not empty. They are merely quiet.
Seraphine smiled faintly.
She reached the pedestal and opened the book. The pages were thin and luminous, filled with script that shifted subtly as she looked at it, rearranging itself into words she could understand. Not spells, exactly. Records. Reflections. The thoughts of mages who had believed that harmony itself could be shaped and preserved.
As she read, the hall responded. Light traced the silver inlays on the floor, rising into the air like ghostly constellations. The ruins seemed less broken, less abandoned, as if remembering what they had once been. Seraphine felt no urge to claim or conquer what she found here. That was never her way. She was a witness, a traveler, someone who listened when magic spoke softly.
A tremor passed through the ground, not a threat, but a release. Somewhere beyond the hall, stone shifted and settled, opening passages long sealed. The ruins were changing, acknowledging her presence, offering more to those willing to walk gently among their stories.
Seraphine closed the book and rested her hand against its cover, committing its weight and warmth to memory. She would not take it with her. Some knowledge belonged where it was born. Instead, she whispered a brief blessing, one of gratitude and protection, and the book dimmed, content.
Turning away from the pedestal, she adjusted her grip on the staff and let the gem drift back to its usual place, floating steadily at her side. There was more to see here now, new paths, old echoes. And beyond the ruins, the world waited, vast and unfinished.
With unhurried steps, Seraphine continued forward, her white robe moving like a quiet promise through the light and dust, as the ancient stones watched her go and remembered what it meant to be alive.
Beautifully ethereal!
